Microsoft Copilot vs ChatGPT: Features, Privacy, and Which to Use

Copilot and ChatGPT differ by account and workflow. Compare Microsoft 365 grounding, consumer controls, and work-data protections before choosing.

Neither Microsoft Copilot nor ChatGPT is the universal winner: the better fit depends on whether you mean Microsoft’s consumer Copilot app or a work/school Copilot experience, and whether you use ChatGPT personally or through a managed workspace. Copilot has a practical edge when your organization relies on Microsoft 365 work data and has enabled the relevant integrations. ChatGPT’s personal controls let you disable model improvement or use Temporary Chat, while OpenAI says organizational workspace content is not used to train models by default. Those are different products and policy contexts, not grounds for a blanket claim that one service is more private.

First, identify which Copilot and ChatGPT you mean

“Copilot” is a family of Microsoft experiences, not one set of features and privacy terms. Microsoft publishes separate guidance for its individual Copilot app, Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps for home, and work or school Copilot experiences. The account you sign in with and the app you use matter.

ChatGPT also differs by account context. Personal consumer accounts have individual data controls; ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare are managed workspaces with separate default data practices and potentially workspace-specific controls or retention policies.

Before comparing features or privacy, check whether you are using a personal account or an organization-managed account, and the exact app or workspace. Do not assume a promise made for one Copilot or ChatGPT experience applies to another.

Which is better for work?

Consider Copilot if your work already lives in Microsoft 365

Microsoft describes Copilot grounding work responses in relevant Microsoft 365 work data, public web content, and material users attach to prompts. With Work IQ enabled, Copilot can draw on work content the user is authorized to access, while respecting existing Microsoft 365 permissions. That makes Copilot worth considering when the work depends on files, emails, chats, or meetings in Microsoft 365; it does not mean Copilot can see every item in an organization.

For Copilot Chat used with a work or school account, Microsoft says enterprise data protection applies and prompts and responses are not used to train foundation models. This statement concerns that organizational experience, not every consumer Copilot use.

Consider ChatGPT if its workspace and controls fit your organization

OpenAI says content in ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default. The organization’s workspace controls and retention policies may also matter, so administrators and users should confirm which settings apply to their account before putting work information into the service.

The policies covered here do not establish that ChatGPT or Copilot produces better general answers. Choose based on the work context, integrations, account governance, and actual tasks your team needs to complete—not an assumed performance ranking.

Which is more private?

There is no supported across-the-board privacy winner in these policies. A useful comparison is specific: which account are you using, what data can the assistant access, what happens to prompts, and which controls or organizational rules apply?

  • Work or school Copilot Chat: Microsoft says enterprise data protection applies and prompts and responses are not used to train foundation models.
  • Personal Copilot app: Microsoft’s guidance for the updated individual app describes settings for memory and personalization, chat history, web search, and advertising. These controls should not be treated as the policy for Microsoft 365 work or school use.
  • Personal ChatGPT: You can turn off model improvement. This is separate from deleting conversations: existing chats remain in history unless you delete them.
  • ChatGPT Temporary Chat: Temporary Chats stay out of history and are not used to improve models while temporary. OpenAI says a copy may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes, so “temporary” does not mean nothing is retained.
  • Managed ChatGPT workspace: OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare content is not used to train models by default. Check applicable workspace controls and retention policies.

For both products, distinguish model training or improvement from chat-history storage, safety retention, access to connected data, and an organization’s own governance rules. They are separate questions.

How to choose for your situation

  1. Identify your account: establish whether you are using a personal account, a work or school sign-in, or a managed ChatGPT workspace.
  2. Map the workflow: if your tasks depend on Microsoft 365 files, mail, chats, or meetings, check whether your Copilot experience has the relevant work-data grounding enabled and what permissions it respects.
  3. Decide whether web information matters: both products’ capabilities and settings depend on the particular experience. Check the controls available in the app you use rather than assuming all versions behave alike.
  4. Review data preferences: for personal Copilot, review memory/personalization, chat history, web search, and advertising settings. For personal ChatGPT, distinguish the model-improvement setting from history deletion and Temporary Chat.
  5. Check workplace requirements: confirm your organization’s approved service, account protections, admin controls, and retention rules before entering work information.
  6. Test your real tasks: compare how each available account handles representative prompts and connected workflows. These sources do not provide an independent head-to-head answer-quality benchmark.

What this comparison does—and does not—establish

The available official policy information supports comparing account type, Microsoft 365 grounding, consumer privacy controls, model-improvement practices, and workplace governance. It does not settle which assistant is more accurate, faster, or better for every task. Current prices, complete plan-by-plan feature entitlements, and geographic availability are also not established here; check the current official plan details for your market before making a purchase decision.
