Laptop Display Refresh Rates Compared: 60 Hz vs. 120 Hz

A 60 Hz laptop screen is often enough for everyday work. Consider 120 Hz for smoother motion, but compare game performance, panel quality and battery behavior too.

For documents, email and everyday browsing, a 60 Hz laptop display is often adequate. A 120 Hz screen is worth considering if you notice or value smoother scrolling, cursor movement, pen input or game motion—but it does not guarantee a game will run at 120 frames per second, and it is not automatically the better screen overall.

What does a laptop display’s refresh rate mean?

Refresh rate is how many times per second a display updates its image. At 60 Hz, the screen can refresh 60 times per second; at 120 Hz, its maximum update rate is 120 times per second. Microsoft explains refresh rate and how to change it in Windows.

A higher refresh rate can make motion look smoother when the laptop and the content can use it. It does not make every task twice as smooth: the benefit depends on what you are doing, what the system is displaying and whether you personally notice the difference.

How do 60 Hz and 120 Hz compare?

What you care about 60 Hz 120 Hz What to consider
Documents and static work Often adequate for ordinary productivity. Can still make cursor movement and scrolling feel smoother. For mostly static work, the difference may not matter to you. HP describes 60 Hz as standard for everyday use and sufficient for most non-gaming users in its guidance; that is manufacturer guidance, not a universal performance test. HP’s refresh-rate guidance.
Scrolling, pen input and motion Standard update rate. Higher maximum update rate can make motion appear smoother. Microsoft identifies browsing and inking among activities that can benefit from a higher refresh rate. Microsoft’s Windows display guidance.
Gaming At a 60 Hz setting, the panel can refresh up to 60 times per second. Can show more frequent updates if the laptop and game produce them. Check game performance and variable refresh support; the panel’s rating alone does not determine frame rate. NVIDIA’s G-SYNC overview.
Battery use Lower refresh rates can reduce power use. Can use more power in some laptop configurations. The effect depends on the laptop and workload. The cited guidance does not establish a universal runtime difference between otherwise equivalent 60 Hz and 120 Hz use. Microsoft, Lenovo and MSI.
Overall screen quality Depends on the individual panel. Also depends on the individual panel. Compare resolution, panel type, brightness and pixel response behavior separately from refresh rate. NVIDIA’s display technology overview and HP’s guidance.

Does a 120 Hz screen mean games run at 120 FPS?

No. Refresh rate is a property of the display; frame rate is how many frames the laptop’s graphics hardware and game produce. A 120 Hz panel can refresh up to 120 times per second, but it cannot make a game generate 120 frames per second if the hardware or settings do not allow it. A game running below that rate can still benefit from a higher-refresh display, but the result depends on its frame output and the screen’s behavior.

Variable refresh rate (VRR) can let a compatible display adjust its refresh timing to better match the rate at which the graphics system presents frames. Confirm that the specific laptop supports VRR; a 120 Hz label by itself does not establish that it does. NVIDIA describes G-SYNC variable refresh technology.

Does 120 Hz drain a laptop battery faster?

It can use more power in some configurations, and lowering the refresh rate can save power. The amount varies by laptop, display and use, so there is no reliable universal number of extra hours to promise for switching from 120 Hz to 60 Hz. Some supported MSI notebooks can switch to 60 Hz or lower on battery, but the option is model-dependent. MSI documents refresh-rate behavior for supported notebooks.

Microsoft also describes a narrower, historical Windows 10-era video-playback case: on supported hardware, playing 24 fps film at 48 Hz improved system battery life by “upwards of 5%” compared with 60 Hz, with a further 10% saving at 24 Hz compared with 48 Hz. Those figures concern matched film playback, not a general 60 Hz versus 120 Hz laptop comparison. Microsoft’s Windows hardware display guidance.

Can Windows switch refresh rates automatically?

Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) is conditional: it requires VRR support and a display capable of at least 120 Hz. Availability and behavior depend on compatible hardware, and Microsoft notes DRR may limit the maximum refresh rate of some games. Do not assume a 120 Hz laptop offers DRR or that the feature will behave identically across models. Microsoft lists DRR requirements and behavior.

How to check or change the refresh rate in Windows

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. Select the display you want to configure if more than one is listed.
  3. Choose a refresh rate from the options shown. Available rates depend on what that display supports.

If the rate you expect is missing, check the selected display and the exact laptop’s specifications; Windows only offers rates supported by the display and hardware configuration.

Which refresh rate should you choose?

Choose 60 Hz when

  • Your main tasks are documents, email and ordinary browsing.
  • You do not particularly value smoother scrolling or motion.
  • You are prioritizing power use or found a 60 Hz laptop that is a better fit overall.

Consider 120 Hz when

  • You notice or value smoother scrolling and cursor movement.
  • You use pen input and want smoother-looking inking.
  • You play motion-heavy games and the laptop can produce higher frame rates in the games you play.

Compare the whole laptop, not just the Hz figure

When comparing two models, weigh refresh rate alongside resolution, panel type, pixel response behavior, brightness, graphics performance and battery priorities. A higher refresh rate does not tell you whether the panel has the resolution or other characteristics you need. If battery life is important, check whether the exact model can lower its refresh rate on battery or supports compatible dynamic refresh behavior; do not infer a specific runtime gain from the refresh-rate specification alone.
