SK hynix leads the cited HBM market-share estimates, but that does not settle which supplier is best for a particular AI or high-performance computing system. Samsung and Micron have also announced HBM4 production and shipment milestones, while Samsung and SK hynix have reported HBM4E sample shipments. Their bandwidth, capacity, power, and supply claims describe different products and stages—not a like-for-like independent test.

What HBM is—and why it is not a regular RAM upgrade

High-bandwidth memory (HBM) is specialized DRAM for systems that need to move large amounts of data, including AI accelerators and high-performance computing hardware. DRAM dies are stacked vertically and connected through thousands of through-silicon vias, creating a wide interface for high data throughput. Micron contrasts HBM with conventional DDR memory used for general computing tasks. HBM is a platform component, not interchangeable with a desktop or server DIMM; its precision manufacturing and system integration make it a specialist product. Micron’s HBM4 overview describes the architecture.

  • Capacity is the amount of data a stack can hold.
  • Bandwidth is how quickly the memory can transfer data.
  • Pin speed and interface width are design inputs to bandwidth, and should be compared only for a stated generation and configuration.
  • Power efficiency matters in dense accelerator systems, but a percentage improvement is meaningful only with its stated baseline and test method.

How the suppliers’ reported HBM products compare

The figures below are manufacturer-reported specifications and milestones, not results from a common independent test. Configurations matter: a peak bandwidth figure for one stack does not establish a universal performance ranking.

Supplier Generation and configuration Reported bandwidth and capacity Reported power comparison Public supply milestone Qualification or evidence caveat
Micron HBM4, 36GB, 12-high More than 2.8 TB/s per stack; pin speeds above 11 Gb/s; 2048-pin interface. More than 20% better power efficiency than HBM3E, in Micron’s stated HBM4 12-high versus HBM3E 12-high comparison. Micron’s current portfolio page lists HBM4 36GB 12-high in high-volume production. Specifications and production status are Micron-reported. The page does not provide an independent head-to-head test or a comparable current customer-by-customer allocation. Micron HBM portfolio; Micron HBM4 product page.
Samsung HBM4, 12-layer configurations; 16-layer configurations planned. HBM4E samples are a separate generation. HBM4: up to 3.3 TB/s per stack and 24–36GB at 12 layers; up to 48GB planned for 16 layers. HBM4E samples: up to 3.6 TB/s per stack and transfer speeds up to 16 Gbps. Samsung reports up to 40% better power efficiency than HBM3E for HBM4. Samsung announced HBM4 mass production and commercial shipments in February 2026. In May 2026 it said it had begun shipping 12-layer HBM4E samples to major global customers. Specifications and milestones are Samsung-reported. HBM4E sampling indicates delivery for evaluation, not mass production or broad revenue contribution. No independent common-condition comparison is provided. Samsung HBM4 announcement; Samsung HBM4E sample announcement.
SK hynix HBM4; HBM4E samples reported in the first half of 2026. The cited material does not state a comparable stack configuration for the HBM4E samples. Comparable bandwidth, capacity, pin-speed, and power figures are not stated in the cited HBM4 development announcement or Q2 2026 results. Not stated in the cited HBM4 development announcement or Q2 2026 results. SK hynix reported that HBM4 mass production began in September 2025 and that it shipped HBM4E samples in the first half of 2026. SK hynix reported completing HBM4 development and establishing a production system, with customer certification in the supply path. It also said customer demand exceeded its supply capabilities; that is not an independently verified comparison of yields or delivered volumes. SK hynix HBM4 development announcement; SK hynix Q2 2026 results.

Samsung’s Memory Development EVP and Head Sang Joon Hwang described HBM4E as demonstrating Samsung’s “distinct technological edge” after HBM4 mass production. That is the company’s characterization, not an independent comparative finding. Samsung’s HBM4E sample announcement attributes the statement to Hwang.

How to read the production and sampling milestones

Commercial execution is distinct from technical capability. A sample shipment means a product has been sent for customer evaluation; it does not by itself establish qualification, volume production, or broad sales. Qualification or certification is a step toward a customer’s acceptance, while mass production and high-volume production describe manufacturing status. Company announcements may use these terms differently, so compare the actual stated milestone rather than treating the words as interchangeable.

What makes a fair supplier comparison?

For a specific accelerator or HPC platform, compare the configuration and supply evidence relevant to that customer rather than choosing a supplier from a single peak figure. The cited public information does not provide independent testing of all three suppliers under identical conditions, a like-for-like yield comparison, or current customer-by-customer allocation data.

  • Match generation and stack configuration, such as HBM4 12-high, before comparing capacity or bandwidth.
  • Keep bandwidth, pin speed, and interface details tied to the stated generation and configuration; the reported values are supplier claims, not common laboratory measurements.
  • Read power-efficiency percentages with their stated HBM3E baseline. The cited material does not establish a shared test method across suppliers.
  • Separate customer samples from qualified products, commercial shipments, mass production, and high-volume production.
  • Read share estimates with the source, period, and metric; shipment share and revenue share are not interchangeable.
  • Do not infer supply volume, yield, or a customer’s preferred supplier from product specifications or market-share estimates alone.

Which HBM supplier is best?

There is no single winner established by these figures. SK hynix leads the cited share snapshots; Samsung has reported HBM4 commercial shipments and HBM4E sampling; Micron reports HBM4 high-volume production; and SK hynix reports HBM4 mass production and HBM4E sampling. The most useful choice for a system depends on the platform’s qualified configurations, the supplier’s ability to meet the customer’s required volume, and performance measured under comparable conditions—details not fully disclosed in the cited public material.
