How to Choose a Safe Browser Extension: Permissions, Reviews, and Warning Signs

Before installing a browser extension, compare what it can access with what it claims to do. Check who publishes it, read its privacy information, and treat reviews and store badges as clues—not guarantees. If the permission request seems broader than the feature requires, pause until you can explain why it is needed.

What an extension permission warning means

A permission prompt describes what an extension may be able to do; it does not, by itself, prove that the extension is dangerous. Google explains that a warning does not mean an extension is dangerous, only that it could be. For example, website access can let an extension read, request, or modify data on pages you visit. A particularly broad warning may cover data on websites and on your computer, potentially including personal files or webcam access. Read the prompt rather than dismissing it automatically. Evaluate the extension before installing it

  1. Confirm the product and publisher. Read the listing description and identify the developer. If the purpose, developer identity, or privacy information is vague, do not install until you can resolve the uncertainty. For work-critical Edge extensions, Microsoft advises contacting the vendor or inspecting the source code when permissions are unclear. Microsoft Edge enterprise extension guidance
  2. Translate each permission into a capability. Pay close attention to access to all websites, browsing data, tabs, bookmarks, or broad computer data. Use the browser’s own prompt or permission explanation to understand what the permission enables. Chrome, for example, says website access can allow reading, requesting, or modifying page data. Google Chrome Web Store Help
  3. Match scope to purpose. Ask what advertised feature needs each permission. A page translator may need to interact with page content; all-site access is harder to justify for a feature that does not interact with pages. This is a screening question, not proof of wrongdoing: a broad request needs a credible explanation. Microsoft’s Edge policy says extensions should request only permissions essential to their declared functionality. Microsoft Edge extension listing requirements
  4. Read the privacy policy and listing details. Look for what information the extension collects, why it collects it, where it goes, and whether third parties receive it. Microsoft requires Edge extension privacy policies to describe data handling, including the use of third-party services. Microsoft Edge extension listing requirements
  5. Use reviews and badges as supporting evidence. Read comments for specific, recurring observations and note their dates. Check what a store badge means in that store; similar-looking labels can have different criteria. Neither a high rating nor a badge establishes how the extension handles data or guarantees its future behavior.

How much weight should reviews and badges carry?

Reviews can reveal patterns, not verify code

Mozilla recommends reading descriptions and reviews, while noting that ratings and reviews are opinions expressed by other Firefox users. Detailed comments about a repeatable issue can inform your decision, but reviews are not a technical audit of the extension’s code or data practices. Mozilla Firefox Help

Badges have limited, specific meanings

Mozilla says its Recommended extensions are selected by staff and community members and manually reviewed for policy compliance. Its caution label indicates that an add-on is not regularly reviewed by Mozilla staff; it does not necessarily mean the add-on is unsafe. Microsoft says the Edge Featured badge is not a judgment of safety and cannot guarantee future behavior. Read the current explanation for a badge in the relevant store rather than treating it as a universal seal of approval. Mozilla Recommended extensions; Microsoft Edge Featured badge

Warning signs that deserve a pause

  • Permissions do not fit the stated feature. Treat the mismatch as a question to resolve, not conclusive evidence of malware. Look for a clear explanation from the developer.
  • The developer or privacy information is unclear. Without knowing who operates the extension and what happens to collected information, you cannot make an informed decision about its data practices.
  • A rating or badge is presented as proof of safety. Reviews are opinions, and badge programs have limited, distinct criteria; neither guarantees future behavior.
  • You do not remember installing it, or no longer need it. Mozilla recommends removing extensions you do not recognize or no longer use. Mozilla Firefox Help
  • A new access request goes beyond what you expected. Check what capability it grants, whether it is optional, and whether you want the feature that triggers it. Firefox documents optional permissions that can be requested when you first use additional functionality. Mozilla WebExtensions documentation

Limit access and review extensions after installation

Installation is not the end of the decision. Where your browser offers site-specific or on-demand access, restrict the extension to the sites or situations where you use it. Edge lets users change site access, and Firefox provides extension-access controls in Add-ons Manager. Exact controls and labels can vary by browser version, so use the current settings available in your browser. Microsoft Edge site access settings; Firefox extension permissions

Revisit the choice after an extension adds a feature, requests new access, or behaves unexpectedly. Remove unfamiliar or unnecessary extensions instead of leaving them installed indefinitely. These checks can help you make a more informed choice, but they cannot certify software as safe: permissions, store reviews, badge criteria, and extension behavior can change.
