To check whether a Steam racing game supports your controller, review the game’s Steam store page and Library compatibility details. For a racing wheel, those controller indicators are not enough: verify the exact wheel model against the game’s documentation and the wheel maker’s guidance, then check your PC setup. Steam Input can help with gamepad-style controls, but it does not certify that a wheel will work.
Check gamepad support on the Steam store page
- Find the exact game and edition. Search the Steam Store for the full title and edition, then review the controller-support details on that listing. Steam’s store information distinguishes popular controller types, including Xbox, DualSense, and DualShock controllers, and identifies games that use the Steam Input API. Valve’s November 2023 explanation describes these store-page indicators.
- Check the Library page with your controller connected. Steam can show compatibility information associated with a controller it has seen you use. Check with the specific controller you plan to play with; one device’s status does not establish another device’s compatibility. See Steam’s Big Picture mode guidance.
- Read Full and Partial Controller Support as gamepad labels. In Big Picture mode, Full Controller Support means common actions, menus, and gameplay can be handled with a controller. Partial Controller Support means some interactions or setup may still require a mouse or keyboard. Neither label is a racing-wheel certification.
What Steam Input can—and cannot—tell you
Steam Input can translate supported controller inputs through gamepad emulation, mouse-and-keyboard emulation, or the Steam Input API. On Windows, gamepad emulation can present an emulated Xbox controller to a game. This can help a supported gamepad work, but it is not a guarantee that every controller—or a racing wheel—will work. Valve explains the mechanisms in Steam Input Gamepad Emulation – Best Practices.

A Steam controller badge therefore answers a gamepad question, not “Will my racing wheel work with this game?” Valve’s developer guidance treats wheels separately: for a game with racing-wheel support, it advises developers to disable Steam Input remapping for Generic/DirectInput controllers, which Steam does not support remapping. That is guidance about how developers configure their games, not a list of games or wheels that are compatible. See Steam Input Devices.
Verify a racing wheel against the game and your setup
- Look for the exact game’s wheel documentation. Check its official manual, developer FAQ, or support page for supported wheel manufacturers and models. Search for the model name, not just the brand.
- Check the wheel maker’s current compatibility guidance. Confirm that the exact wheel model is supported for the game and your operating system. A manufacturer’s general PC compatibility statement does not necessarily establish support in a particular game.
- Match the setup details. Check the required operating system, connection method, drivers or firmware, and the game’s input settings against the game developer’s and wheel maker’s instructions. Do not assume Steam Input will make a game recognize a wheel natively.
- Separate local play from Steam Link streaming. If you are streaming through Steam Link, Valve says racing wheels are not natively supported there; its support page names VirtualHere as a third-party option. This restriction is about Steam Link, not proof that the game itself lacks wheel support when run locally. See Steam Link – Input / Controllers.
How to compare your options
| What you are checking | Evidence to use | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Gamepad | The exact controller type listed on the game’s Steam page, plus Library compatibility information shown for that controller | Useful evidence about gamepad support; Full or Partial support indicates the expected level of controller convenience. |
| Racing wheel | The game’s official supported-device information and the wheel maker’s current guidance for the exact model and setup | Evidence about that wheel in that game and configuration. Steam’s gamepad indicators do not provide this comparison. |
Steam controller statistics are not compatibility evidence
Valve reported in November 2023 that around 12% of active Steam players regularly used a controller, and that more than 3 billion Steam game sessions in the preceding year included one. Those figures describe Steam controller use overall, not racing games or wheel compatibility; they cannot show whether a particular wheel works with a particular title. The figures and their scope are described in Valve’s Steam announcement.
