The technician may need to work outside, drill a small entry hole, or arrange a separate visit if the route needs extra work. Before the appointment, clear access and choose a preferred equipment location; during the visit, agree on the route; before the technician leaves, confirm the connection is active and ask what was tested.
What happens during a fiber installation?
The exact process depends on your internet provider, address, and building. A typical professional installation follows these stages:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Connect the property to the local fiber network. The service may arrive from a utility pole or through an underground duct. The provider may fit an exterior junction box or network interface unit (NIU). GFiber describes an outside NIU and, for some underground utility arrangements, a buried cable route across the yard; that is not a universal method. GFiber explains how it brings service to a home, while Openreach outlines its Full Fibre installation process.
- Agree on the cable route and entry point. The technician discusses how the cable can enter the building and where equipment can go. A small hole through an exterior wall may be needed. Ask about the route before work starts; site conditions and provider practices determine what is feasible. Openreach says it seeks permission before required digging or drilling. Renters should get the landlord’s approval first.
- Fit the indoor fiber terminal. The technician routes fiber indoors to a terminal. Openreach calls its device an optical network terminal (ONT); GFiber calls its device a Fiber Jack. Names and equipment vary by provider.
- Connect the router and any included equipment. The terminal connects to a router, which provides the home network and Wi-Fi. Depending on the service, the provider may also install a mesh extender, phone equipment, or other included devices. Check what your plan supplies rather than assuming you need to buy a router or modem. BT describes its Full Fibre installation, and TalkTalk explains its new-line installation.
- Activate and test the connection. The scope of checks differs. Openreach describes testing the new line; GFiber says its professional installation includes checks of Wi-Fi and wired connections.
The ONT or other fiber terminal is the handoff between the incoming fiber line and your home network. It is not the same device as a generic Wi-Fi router, and a router does not replace the provider’s fiber terminal. For another provider-specific explanation of the equipment, see Brightspeed’s fiber installation guide.
How should you prepare before the appointment?
- Confirm the appointment details with your ISP. Check the time window, who must be present, how to arrange access, and what to do if you need to reschedule. Order requirements are provider-specific; Openreach notes that customers should contact their provider for order details.
- Arrange permissions and shared access. If you rent, ask the landlord before any drilling or exterior work. In a flat or apartment, find out whether the technician will need access to a shared services cupboard and arrange entry with the landlord, caretaker, or building manager. Openreach has a separate Full Fibre installation guide for Northern Ireland.
- Clear the likely work areas. Make the route to the proposed indoor equipment area accessible. Identify a preferred place for the terminal and router that has a power outlet and can serve the rooms where you use Wi-Fi. Openreach cautions against putting a router in a dark cupboard under the stairs, where its placement may not serve the home well.
- Ask whether any work happens before the home visit. Some providers may complete exterior work in advance or need a separate appointment. GFiber says it may fit an outside NIU before the in-home appointment; Openreach also notes that some external work can precede the scheduled visit. Ask your ISP whether your address already has an outside box or indoor terminal and whether the line route is ready.
- Keep your requested route flexible. You can state a preference for the cable entry and equipment location, but do not assume the technician can reuse an old hole, conceal wiring, or put equipment in a particular spot. Ask what is practical before installation work begins.
Do you need to be home?
Plan to have an adult available unless your ISP confirms otherwise. Openreach and GFiber specify that someone aged 18 or older must be present for their appointments. That requirement is not universal across all providers, so check your own appointment terms and make sure the person present can arrange access and discuss the cable route.

How long will the technician visit take?
Published provider estimates vary; they are not an industry-wide average. The figures below describe different companies’ own services and may not predict the time needed at your address.
| Provider | Published estimate | What it refers to |
|---|---|---|
| Openreach | One to four hours | Most installations on its current, undated guide; duration depends on the property and fiber route. Clearing a blocked duct or other extra work can take longer. |
| GFiber | Around two hours | Its in-home appointment, according to its current support guide. |
| BT | Up to three hours | Its usual Full Fibre installation duration; work may take place inside and outside the home. |
Leave a flexible window, and ask your ISP for the estimate attached to your appointment. If exterior work, a blocked duct, or another construction task is needed, the job may take longer or require a follow-up visit.

What should you check before the technician leaves?
- Confirm that the provider says the line is active and that the fiber terminal and router are powered and connected.
- Ask the technician to identify the status lights or indicators that show normal operation on your specific equipment. Their meanings differ by device, so do not rely on a generic light-color guide.
- Ask what connection tests were completed. The checks may cover the line, Wi-Fi, or a wired connection, depending on the provider and installation.
- If Wi-Fi coverage is weak in a room, discuss router placement and the equipment included with your plan before buying an upgrade. Check compatibility with your ISP if you later decide to add or replace equipment.
- Ask how to contact support if the connection stops working after the visit.
What installation details should you confirm with your provider?
When booking or clarifying the appointment, ask about the parts of the job that vary most by provider and address:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Whether your address qualifies for a professional installation or a self-install option.
- Whether the service will arrive by pole or underground route, and whether exterior work is complete.
- Whether an outside box or indoor terminal already exists, or if a new entry point may be needed.
- What terminal, router, mesh equipment, or other devices are included, and what wiring the technician will install.
- Whether the work is expected to fit one appointment or could require additional construction or a follow-up visit.
These are questions to ask, not options every provider guarantees. Provider procedures also depend on location: Openreach and BT guidance is UK-specific, while GFiber, Brightspeed, and TalkTalk apply to their own service areas. Fibrus’s September 2024 installation guide gives an example of up to 3 m of internal cable under its standard order condition; that detail should not be applied to other providers.
