Meta’s Muse could make product discovery and small-business tasks easier, but the available evidence does not show that it improves sales or shopping outcomes. The key divide is control: Shopify is distributing eligible merchant catalogs across AI channels, while Amazon is promoting its own shopping assistant and, according to September 2026 reporting, has not authorized Muse to access Amazon.com.
What the disagreement is really about
These companies are not taking opposite positions on AI. They are choosing different ways to control the shopping journey: who starts product discovery, which catalogs an assistant can reach, and who owns the interaction and checkout. Meta is developing an agent and shopping surfaces; Shopify is making merchant product data available to outside AI channels; Amazon is building shopping assistance inside its own retail experience and has drawn a boundary around outside-agent access.

That distinction matters more than trying to rank the tools as “good” or “bad.” No independent comparative study in the available evidence establishes that Muse, Amazon’s assistant, or Shopify’s distribution strategy delivers better results for shoppers or merchants.

What Meta’s Muse offers shoppers and businesses
Shopping discovery in Meta AI
In an update dated May 12, 2026, Meta said its Meta AI shopping mode could search nearby Facebook Marketplace listings alongside products from across the internet. Meta described options to see new and used items and refine results by price, style, or distance, as well as browsing public content from a named brand or creator. The announcement places discovery within Meta’s social, creator, and Marketplace surfaces; it does not establish that every retailer or product is accessible. Meta’s Muse Spark update

Muse for Small Business
Meta announced Muse for Small Business on September 29, 2026. Meta says business users can connect Facebook and Instagram business accounts and tools such as Shopify, Klaviyo, QuickBooks, and Canva. Its described tasks include reviewing sales and campaigns, drafting ad content, monitoring business communications, and reviewing financial activity. Meta says “nothing publishes, sends, or spends without your approval.” These are Meta’s descriptions of capabilities and safeguards, not an independent evaluation of performance, privacy, or security. Shopify’s approach: distribute merchant catalogs to AI channels
Shopify’s strategy is to structure merchant product information and make it available to AI discovery and checkout experiences. Its Agentic Storefronts announcement describes surfacing products to channels including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini, with embedded checkout integrations and a catalog option for brands that do not use Shopify for their main store. These are Shopify’s product and benefit claims, not independent evidence of sales impact. Shopify’s AI-commerce announcement

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
For Meta specifically, Shopify’s Help Center says eligible products can be available through the Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channel. Product data may include titles, descriptions, options, images, price, availability, and other structured attributes, which Shopify says are continuously updated. Eligibility and rollout are important: the documentation does not say every Shopify product is currently purchasable through Muse. It also notes that products may remain discoverable through web search or other feeds after a merchant removes Shopify Catalog access. Shopify’s product eligibility and channel documentation

Amazon describes its own assistant as able to answer shopping questions, make personalized recommendations, compare items, track prices, research larger purchases, reorder, and make purchases on a shopper’s behalf. Its materials also describe personalized prompts and visual product discovery. Amazon presents these capabilities as part of its own shopping experience. The assistant formerly called Rufus was renamed “Alexa for Shopping” on May 13, 2026; that is the current name in Amazon’s published overview. Amazon’s shopping AI overview

In September 2026, Amazon told Retail Dive it had not authorized Muse to access Amazon’s retail site and said outside purchase agents should operate openly and respect a provider’s choice about participation. How the approaches compare
| Question | Meta and Muse | Shopify | Amazon |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who initiates discovery? | Meta’s shopping mode is a consumer-facing discovery surface in Meta AI, with Marketplace, web products, and public brand or creator content described by Meta. | Shopify makes eligible merchant catalogs available to supported AI channels; the channel or shopper experience can initiate discovery. | Amazon’s assistant supports discovery within Amazon’s shopping experience. |
| Which products are reachable? | Meta described Marketplace listings and products from across the internet; access to any specific retailer is not guaranteed. | Eligible products and channels depend on Shopify’s availability and merchant product eligibility. | Amazon describes shopping assistance for products in its own retail environment; Amazon reportedly did not authorize Muse to access its site in September 2026. |
| Who controls the customer interaction and checkout? | Meta’s features create an interaction in Meta’s AI surfaces; the cited sources do not establish universal Muse checkout availability. | Shopify describes AI-channel integrations and embedded checkout, subject to rollout and channel availability. | Amazon describes recommendations and purchases on a shopper’s behalf within its own shopping experience. |
| What can a merchant configure? | Meta describes connected business tools and approval before publishing, sending, or spending; broader configuration details are not stated in the cited announcement. | Merchants can manage catalog access and product information, subject to eligibility; removing Shopify Catalog access may not remove discovery through other feeds. | The cited overview focuses on the shopper assistant; merchant controls for outside agents are not stated. |

What shoppers and merchants should take from this
For shoppers
- AI discovery may bring together social content, marketplace listings, and retailer catalogs, but the set of products an assistant can access may be incomplete.
- Check where a purchase will actually be completed and which company’s shopping environment handles the transaction; the announcements do not establish a universal cross-retailer Muse checkout.
- Compare results and prices directly when coverage matters. The available sources describe features, not an independent assessment of recommendation quality.
For merchants
- Structured, current product data is the practical prerequisite for catalog distribution. Shopify lists fields such as titles, descriptions, options, images, price, and availability.
- Check the specific channel’s eligibility and rollout status before assuming products can be discovered or bought there. Shopify’s documentation does not guarantee that all products are available through Muse.
- Consider the trade-off between reaching shoppers in external AI channels and maintaining control over the customer interaction and checkout. The sources do not establish which approach produces better economics.
- Treat Meta’s approval controls as company-described safeguards, not as a substitute for reviewing which accounts and tools are connected or what actions an agent can take.
Is Muse good or bad for e-commerce?
Muse represents a potential convenience for discovery and small-business work, while Shopify’s channel strategy could widen distribution for eligible merchant catalogs. Amazon’s stance preserves a more first-party shopping experience and sets a limit on outside-agent access, according to the September 2026 report. Whether those choices benefit shoppers or merchants depends on access, transparency, checkout control, and actual outcomes—none of which the feature announcements alone settle.
