Set Puppeteer’s userDataDir launch option to a writable, dedicated directory, then save the capture with page.screenshot(). Use the Chrome user-data directory itself—not a profile subfolder such as Default—and do not run another Chrome process against that same directory at the same time.
Minimal Windows example
Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project, choose a directory the Windows account running the script can write to, and set it as userDataDir. This example uses an illustrative path; change YourName to a real account name or choose another writable location. Puppeteer documents userDataDir as a launch option in its LaunchOptions interface.

The script launches a browser, navigates to the page, writes capture.png in the current working directory, and closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails. The first launch may take longer if Puppeteer still needs to download its compatible Chrome for Testing build.
Choose the right user-data directory
A user-data directory is the root where Chrome stores browser state, including profile data. Chromium’s Windows example uses the command-line flag --user-data-dir=c:\foo; Puppeteer’s userDataDir launch option sets the equivalent directory for its browser process. For automation, make a separate directory for the script rather than pointing it at the profile used by your everyday Chrome session. A profile such as Default lives inside a user-data directory; do not assume that supplying an individual profile folder is equivalent to choosing the root directory.
- Use a stable path so repeated runs can reuse that automation browser state.
- Ensure the Windows account running Node.js has permission to create and modify the directory.
- Do not start multiple Chrome processes that share the same directory concurrently. Close the process holding it or give each concurrent job a separate directory.
Control what the screenshot contains
Puppeteer’s screenshot API is Page.screenshot(). The Screenshots guide demonstrates page and element captures; the ScreenshotOptions interface documents the available capture options.

PNG is the documented default image type. The quality option applies to formats other than PNG. Choose viewport capture when only the currently visible area matters; use fullPage for a full document, or clip when you need a defined region.
Bundled Chrome or a separately managed executable?
By default, Puppeteer downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing build. If your setup requires a separately managed browser binary, specify its path with executablePath. Puppeteer warns that its compatibility guarantee applies to the bundled browser, so managing a separate Chrome version adds responsibility for version compatibility and browser updates. The launch option is documented in the LaunchOptions interface.

If package installation scripts were blocked and the browser was not downloaded, the Puppeteer install guide documents npx puppeteer browsers install as a manual installation step. puppeteer-core does not download Chrome; install a browser and provide its executable path when using it. Troubleshoot Windows launch and capture problems
Chrome reports that the profile is already in use
Puppeteer checks the Windows profile lock. If another Chrome process is using the same userDataDir, close that process before retrying, or select a different writable directory. The launcher’s lock handling is visible in BrowserLauncher.ts.

The profile cannot be written
Choose a directory the script’s Windows account can create and modify. Check the account and folder permissions rather than reusing a protected or currently locked Chrome profile.
Chrome opens inconsistently under an organization policy
Puppeteer’s troubleshooting documentation says it passes --disable-extensions by default; some Chrome policies enforce extensions. If that specific policy conflict is the cause, the documented workaround is enableExtensions: true in the launch configuration. Consult the current Puppeteer troubleshooting guide before changing the setting.

A sandbox permission error appears
The troubleshooting guide says that beginning with Puppeteer v22.14.0, installation attempts to configure Windows sandbox permissions using Chrome’s setup.exe. Verify the Puppeteer version and exact error first. For older installations or persistent errors, follow the guide’s documented icacls procedure for the Puppeteer Chrome cache; in high-security environments, use the more restrictive SID recommended by the installer. Do not broadly change permissions without confirming that this is the failure you are addressing.
The Chrome executable is missing
With puppeteer-core, install the browser yourself and set executablePath. If using regular Puppeteer, check whether install scripts were blocked; the install guide’s manual browser command is npx puppeteer browsers install.
