Metaphor: ReFantazio Beginner’s Guide to Archetypes, Combat, and the Calendar System

The safest way to begin Metaphor: ReFantazio is to treat Archetypes as flexible jobs, not permanent character identities. Keep damage, healing, weakness coverage, and support available across the party; use the real-time field layer to choose encounters; then use turn-based combat to test and exploit weaknesses. Every day on the calendar is another strategic resource, so spend time according to deadlines, follower bonds, dungeon readiness, and the virtues you still need—not according to a supposedly perfect universal schedule.

What Metaphor: ReFantazio expects you to manage

Metaphor combines two kinds of play. Outside battle, you move through the field in real time and decide how to approach enemies. Once an encounter starts, combat becomes turn-based, with each action chosen deliberately. Atlus describes the system as turn-based combat blended with real-time action. That distinction is the foundation of almost every beginner decision: the field layer is about contact and risk, while the turn-based layer is about information, weakness exploitation, and conserving useful actions.

The other major system is the calendar. A day-and-night cycle limits how many activities you can complete before the story advances. Dungeon trips, follower relationships, and virtue-building all compete for that time. Atlus explicitly frames time management as essential, and Xbox Wire likewise describes the calendar as a series of choices that advance with your daily actions.

These systems are connected. Follower relationships awaken and strengthen Archetypes, while dungeon progress determines what combat roles you need next. A good plan therefore does not maximize one system in isolation. It keeps the party capable of fighting, advances the relationships that improve that capability, and leaves enough calendar time to meet the next deadline.

Archetypes: build roles instead of permanent identities

What an Archetype does

Archetypes are the game’s party-customization powers. They let you assign a combat role and change the way a character contributes to a fight. The useful beginner question is not “Which Archetype should this character use forever?” but “What does the party lack for the next area?”

At the start of a campaign, aim for coverage rather than a narrow specialization. You want access to a dependable source of direct damage, a way to restore the party, several damage types for weakness testing, and at least one option that improves safety or efficiency. The exact balance can change with difficulty and personal preference, but a party that can only deal one kind of damage will have fewer answers when an enemy resists it.

Think in role coverage

Role to cover Why it matters Beginner check
Reliable damage Finishes ordinary encounters without spending every resource. At least one character can contribute consistent damage even before a weakness is known.
Healing and recovery Prevents a small mistake from forcing an early retreat. Keep a recovery option available before entering an unfamiliar area.
Elemental or damage-type variety Lets you test more possible weaknesses and avoid repeatedly using a resisted attack. Carry more than one damage type among the active assignments.
Support and control Improves the party’s ability to survive or finish difficult turns. Reserve a slot for an effect that helps the group when raw damage is not enough.
Survivability Gives you room to learn an enemy pattern without immediately losing the fight. Do not replace every defensive option with another damage assignment.

This is a planning framework, not a list of mandatory builds. If a particular area repeatedly defeats you, change the assignments that address the problem instead of assuming the entire party is underleveled or that one character has been ruined.

Change assignments when the evidence changes

Use the first few encounters in a new area as reconnaissance. If a damage type is ineffective, stop spending turns on it until you have a reason to try again. If a character is taking too much damage, move that character toward a safer role or give the party more recovery. If fights are taking too long because no one can exploit the enemies you are seeing, broaden damage coverage before pushing deeper.

Changing Archetypes is most valuable when it responds to a pattern. One failed attack is information; several stalled encounters are a build problem worth correcting. Keep a small mental note of which attacks worked, which did not, and whether the party’s resources are being consumed faster than expected.

Followers are part of your Archetype plan

Follower bonds are not merely optional story conversations. Xbox Wire explains that interacting with followers and creating bonds awakens and strengthens Archetypes. That makes relationship planning a combat decision as well as a narrative one.

When choosing between two available activities, ask which bond improves a role you are currently missing. A follower linked to healing, damage coverage, or another needed function can be more valuable right now than a bond whose benefit duplicates an assignment you already use comfortably. Conversely, if your party already handles the next area well, a different relationship or a virtue increase may be the better use of the day.

Do not assume every follower must be advanced at the same pace. The calendar is limited, so prioritize the bonds that solve a current problem or unlock a useful improvement before an approaching deadline. You can pursue completion on a later playthrough or a more relaxed schedule; a first run benefits from a clear purpose for each meeting.

How to approach combat

Use the real-time field layer deliberately

The field is where you decide whether contact with an enemy is worth the risk. Before engaging, look at your current condition, the party’s remaining resources, and how much time you have spent in the area. A fight that is easy when you are prepared may be wasteful when it leaves you unable to handle a stronger encounter farther ahead.

  • Choose encounters intentionally. If you are testing a new area, enter enough fights to learn the local threats, but do not treat every visible enemy as mandatory.
  • Use the field to avoid unnecessary attrition. Real-time control gives you an opportunity to approach, disengage, or select a better moment rather than accepting every contact.
  • Reassess after a poor opening. If the party enters combat in bad condition or with an unsuitable assignment, retreating and changing the setup is often more efficient than repeating the same attempt.

The official descriptions establish the hybrid structure, but they do not provide a complete enemy-weakness table. That means your own observations during field encounters remain important. Treat the first battle against an unfamiliar enemy as a test rather than assuming an attack will work because it worked elsewhere.

Turn-based combat: test, exploit, conserve

Once combat begins, use a simple sequence:

  1. Test a plausible option. Try an available damage type or effect that you have not confirmed against the enemy.
  2. Read the result. An effective attack tells you what to repeat; an ineffective attack tells you what to stop spending.
  3. Exploit the weakness. When you identify an effective option, use it while it remains the best way to convert a turn into progress.
  4. Protect the party. If the enemy survives and threatens to overwhelm you, spend an action on recovery or support instead of insisting on maximum damage.
  5. Review the assignment. Repeatedly stalled turns are evidence that an Archetype change or a different damage mix is needed.

An ineffective attack is not only low damage; it is also an opportunity cost. You have spent one of your limited actions without advancing the fight. Preserve actions when an option is clearly failing, and use the information gained from that failure to improve the next turn.

When a fight keeps stalling

Do not respond to every difficult battle by using the same action more aggressively. Work through the problem in order:

  • Check whether the party is relying on one damage type that the enemy resists.
  • Switch an Archetype so another damage type or support role is available.
  • Use healing or defensive support before the party reaches a crisis.
  • Leave the encounter area if your remaining resources cannot support another attempt.
  • Return after improving the relevant follower-linked Archetype or changing the party’s assignments.

This process separates a tactical mistake from a calendar mistake. If the party can win but needs more recovery than the current dungeon trip allows, the right answer may be to end the trip, spend the next period on preparation, and try again.

How to spend each day on the calendar

Start with constraints, not a wish list

Before committing to an activity, identify the next fixed constraint: a story deadline, a dungeon you must reach, a follower opportunity that may not remain available, or a virtue requirement for an action you want later. The calendar makes every choice compete with another, so a plan that ignores timing can waste more than a plan that is merely imperfect.

  1. Check the nearest deadline. Decide how much dungeon progress and preparation it requires.
  2. List the party’s current weakness. Note whether you need damage coverage, recovery, survivability, or a follower bond that strengthens one of those areas.
  3. Choose the activity with the highest immediate leverage. A bond that unlocks a needed Archetype may outrank a minor virtue increase when a difficult area is next.
  4. Reserve time for the dungeon itself. Do not spend every available period on preparation if doing so leaves no practical window to advance.
  5. Replan after major discoveries. A newly revealed weakness or an unexpected difficulty spike can change the value of your next activity.

Dungeon progress versus relationships versus virtues

Activity Choose it when Watch for
Dungeon trip A deadline is approaching, the party is prepared, and additional progress unlocks the next meaningful step. Entering without enough recovery or without a plan for unfamiliar weaknesses.
Follower bond The relationship addresses a missing combat role or provides an improvement you expect to use soon. Spending a period on a duplicate benefit while a more urgent bond or deadline is waiting.
Virtue-building activity You need a threshold for a future interaction or want a broadly useful improvement during a lower-pressure period. Raising virtues without checking whether the resulting option can be used before the calendar advances.

There is no single perfect schedule. The best order depends on difficulty, preferred builds, and whether you are pursuing completion. A player focused on the story may accept fewer optional bonds; a completion-focused player needs to distribute periods more carefully and may deliberately sacrifice some immediate combat convenience.

A practical day-and-night decision rule

At each available period, ask three questions: “What deadline is closest?”, “What does the party lack?”, and “Which activity cannot be recovered easily later?” If the answer to the first question is urgent, progress or preparation for that deadline comes first. If the party is stable and the deadline is distant, use the period to advance a follower or virtue. If an opportunity is time-sensitive, take it before a routine activity that can be repeated later.

Keep a short note of the next intended activity rather than trying to memorize a complete calendar. The game’s events can change the value of your plan, and a flexible outline is safer than blindly following a rigid sequence.

Should you finish a dungeon in one day?

Not automatically. Completing a dungeon in one day is worthwhile when the party can maintain recovery, has enough damage coverage to handle the area’s enemies, and can finish without turning the final encounters into a resource crisis. It is a poor goal when it forces repeated ineffective attacks, leaves no healing margin, or consumes the time needed for a more valuable follower or preparation activity.

Use this continue-or-leave checklist

  • Continue if your recovery is stable, the current Archetype assignments are answering the area’s threats, and progress toward the deadline is more valuable than the alternative use of the remaining period.
  • Leave if the party is repeatedly stalling, you have not identified useful damage options, or another attempt would begin with too little recovery.
  • Leave if finishing today would consume a follower opportunity that directly strengthens the party before the next required challenge.
  • Continue cautiously if you have learned enough from earlier encounters to change assignments and the remaining section is now a manageable test rather than a blind push.

Think of a dungeon trip as an investment. A partial run that teaches you enemy behavior and identifies the needed Archetype can be successful even if you return later. A full-day clear that leaves the party unprepared for the next obligation may be less efficient than stopping early.

Prepare before entering

  • Assign roles that cover damage, recovery, and at least one alternative damage type.
  • Confirm that the follower-linked improvements you intended to use have actually been awakened or strengthened.
  • Decide what evidence will make you change the plan: repeated ineffective attacks, unsustainable recovery, or a defensive gap.
  • Leave enough calendar flexibility to recover from an unsuccessful attempt instead of assuming the first run must be perfect.

Comparing Archetypes without chasing a tier list

When two Archetypes appear useful, compare them using the same criteria rather than choosing only the one with the highest visible damage.

Comparison axis Question to ask Why it matters
Role coverage Does this assignment add a capability the active party lacks? A modest upgrade that fills a missing role can outperform a stronger duplicate.
Damage type or weakness coverage Does it test or exploit a different kind of enemy vulnerability? Variety gives the turn-based system more effective options.
Resource cost Can the party use the role repeatedly without exhausting recovery? A powerful action is less useful if it shortens every dungeon trip.
Survivability Does the assignment help the character or party withstand mistakes? New areas reward room to learn enemy behavior.
Availability How soon can the relevant follower bond or upgrade path be reached? A theoretically excellent option may not solve the problem facing you today.

Apply the comparison to the next area, not to an abstract endgame ranking. Your preferred assignment may change as the calendar, followers, and enemy mix change.

Common beginner mistakes and precise fixes

Locking each character into one identity

Problem: You keep the original assignment even after enemies expose a different weakness.

Fix: Treat Archetypes as role tools. Change the assignment when the party lacks a needed damage type, healing option, or support effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Attacking with an ineffective option repeatedly

Problem: You spend several turns repeating an attack that has already failed.

Fix: Record the failure as information, preserve the next action, and test another option or change the party’s assignments.

Entering every visible encounter

Problem: Field battles consume recovery and calendar time before the important section of the dungeon.

Fix: Use the real-time layer to choose which contacts are worth taking, especially when the party is already carrying the information it needs from that area.

Spending days without a deadline check

Problem: You advance a convenient relationship or virtue while an approaching obligation needs preparation.

Assuming a one-day clear is always optimal

Problem: You push forward after recovery and damage coverage have become unreliable.

Fix: Use the continue-or-leave checklist. A planned return is better than a repeated blind attempt.

Trying to follow a universal “perfect” calendar

Problem: A schedule built for another difficulty, build, or completion goal does not fit your run.

Fix: Use priorities and decision rules rather than fixed dates. Difficulty, preferred builds, and completion goals legitimately change the best order.

When an official guide is useful

If you want a reference beyond in-game experimentation, two official guide formats are documented. Future Press publishes a Metaphor: ReFantazio Official Strategy Guide listed at 592 pages. The PlayStation Store’s Guidebook Edition includes a 55-page Essential Digital Strategy Guide adapted from that larger book.

Guide option Format and scope Best fit
Future Press official guide Physical official strategy guide; 592 pages. Readers who want a comprehensive, deep-reference book.
Guidebook Edition Essential Digital Strategy Guide Digital excerpt; 55 pages adapted from the larger guide. Players who want a shorter reference included with that edition.

Regional availability and current pricing can change, and no price should be assumed from the page counts. For most beginners, the guide’s practical value is highest after learning the basic loop: use it to verify a stubborn calendar choice or look up a specific system, not as a substitute for adapting Archetypes to the evidence from your own battles.

A repeatable routine for your first playthrough

  1. Before a new area: assign broad role coverage, including recovery and more than one damage type.
  2. During the first encounters: test options once, note what works, and stop paying for ineffective attacks.
  3. After a difficult fight: decide whether the issue was a tactical mistake, a missing role, or insufficient resources.
  4. Before spending the next period: check the nearest deadline, then compare dungeon progress, a useful follower bond, and a virtue requirement.
  5. Before committing to a full-day dungeon push: confirm that recovery and damage coverage can support the remaining section.
  6. After a failed attempt: change one meaningful variable—Archetype assignments, follower progress, or the timing of the dungeon trip—before trying again.

This routine keeps the game’s systems connected without requiring a rigid schedule. You are always converting information from combat into a better party setup, then converting that setup into a more informed calendar choice.
