Meta says Muse uses Muse Spark and is accessed through its Muse app and WhatsApp; OpenAI says Dots use GPT-6 Astra and are available through ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams. Both are designed to keep working after you leave, but neither provider’s launch description establishes which performs better. The practical choice depends on your apps, account eligibility, location, and comfort with the permissions each agent requests.

What the agents are designed to do
Meta Muse
Meta’s September 8, 2026 announcement presents Muse as a personal agent for tasks and goals. The company says it can continue working after the app is closed and return when circumstances change or it needs approval. Meta describes Muse Secure VM as the agent’s dedicated cloud environment and browser. The initial availability described in that announcement was a US rollout across iOS, Android, and the web. Meta’s announcement also said Muse was free for most needs at launch, with subscription plans for users who wanted to do more; current availability and terms may differ.
ChatGPT Dots
OpenAI’s September 29, 2026 announcement describes Dots as always-on agents that can work toward goals around the clock, use their own cloud browser and computer, and learn from feedback. OpenAI also says a user can grant a Dot permission to connect to a laptop. Which one fits your workflow?
- Look at Muse first if you want to explore Meta’s personal-agent experience, expect to use WhatsApp, and are in a location where Muse is available.
- Look at Dots first if your work already happens in ChatGPT, Slack, or Teams and your account and region are eligible.
- For either service, check that the specific apps and actions you need are supported on your account. Connector totals alone do not tell you whether a particular workflow will work.
Availability and plan eligibility can change, and secondary comparisons may lag behind product updates. Check the providers’ current account and rollout information before relying on access or cost details. The launch announcements cited here do not establish current availability in every country or provide current plan prices.
Permissions deserve as much attention as features
An agent that can take action is different from a chatbot that only drafts a response. Before connecting an account, decide what the agent needs to read or change, then grant only that access. Meta says users can select app permissions, including read-only email access or access that can include sending. It says Sentinel must approve internet actions and that Muse asks before sensitive actions such as sending email or making a purchase. Meta also describes an audit trail and an option to opt out of interaction data being used to train Meta AI. OpenAI says Dots have safeguards, access controls, and action review. Those descriptions do not mean that every action will be correct or that risk is eliminated. Review consequential actions and the permissions requested before allowing an agent to work with sensitive accounts. OpenAI’s account of its controls is in its launch announcement.

The available launch descriptions support a comparison of stated features and access routes, not a performance verdict. They do not provide a controlled, independent test of Muse and Dots on equivalent tasks, so there is no evidence here to say one is faster, more capable, safer, or more reliable. Choose based on the services you already use, the account and location requirements, and the permissions you are willing to grant; judge performance on your own low-risk tasks before assigning consequential work.
