That does not remove every unwanted Windows component or guarantee a completely “debloated” installation. Rufus is a bootable-media utility, not a full system-cleanup tool.
What Rufus can—and cannot—change
Rufus creates bootable USB installation media from an ISO image. In its Windows User Experience options, available choices depend on the Rufus release and Windows ISO. Rufus release notes document options for local-account setup and disabling selected apps, including Teams, Outlook, and Copilot in the listed release history. Read the labels shown by your version before selecting anything.

These are targeted installation customizations, not proof that all built-in apps, services, or other software will be excluded. The official Rufus project site lists Windows 11 as a supported ISO. It showed Rufus 4.15, dated 2026-06-30, as its latest stable release in the cited version information; check the project site for the current release.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimum requirements include a compatible 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12 or later graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a 720p display larger than 9 inches. Review Microsoft’s full requirements and confirm the PC’s activation and license details before installing.

- Use a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating installation media erases its contents, so copy any files you need elsewhere first. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 download and installation-media instructions.
- Back up personal files before a clean installation. Microsoft notes that a clean install removes personal files, installed apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings changes.
- Confirm which drive is the USB and which disk is the intended Windows target. Choosing the wrong device during media creation or setup can destroy data.
Create the Windows 11 USB in Rufus
- Download Rufus from the official Rufus project site, and obtain the Windows 11 ISO through Microsoft’s download page.
- Connect the blank USB drive, open Rufus, and check the Device field carefully to ensure it names the intended USB. Its contents will be erased.
- Choose the Windows 11 ISO as the boot selection. Confirm the selected device and ISO before starting the write process.
- Start writing the USB. If Rufus displays a Windows User Experience dialog, inspect the options and select only the customizations you want. Options can differ between Rufus versions and Windows images; do not assume an option is present or behaves identically in every combination.
- If you choose an option that bypasses hardware checks, understand the support implications before proceeding. Meeting the published requirements is the recommended path.
- When Rufus finishes, restart the target PC and use its boot menu or firmware settings to boot from the USB. Follow Windows Setup, taking care to select the intended installation disk.
Local account setup and Microsoft account requirements
Microsoft says Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial setup. Rufus’s documented setup customizations include local-account configuration, but availability and behavior depend on the Rufus release and ISO. Treat it as a media-creation option, not a change to Microsoft’s stated baseline requirement; check the exact option shown and the current setup flow for the image you are installing.
Should you bypass Windows 11 hardware checks?
Only consider a compatibility bypass if you understand that it does not make unsupported hardware supported. Microsoft says installing on a PC that does not meet Windows 11 requirements is not recommended and may cause compatibility issues. Such devices are unsupported, and Microsoft does not guarantee they will receive updates. See the requirements and Microsoft’s unsupported-device notice before deciding.

Clean installation or upgrade?
Installation media can be used for Windows installation paths, but a clean install is destructive: it removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings changes. If you need to preserve your current setup, do not proceed with a clean-install path until you have backed up your files and confirmed the installation method and target disk.

After Windows Setup
- Confirm that the installed Windows edition is the one you intended and check activation.
- Run Windows Update, then check Device Manager for missing drivers or device warnings.
- Use the PC manufacturer’s support information to identify drivers or firmware needed for the hardware.
- Reinstall only the apps you need and review privacy and setup settings.
