For most individual users, ChatGPT currently gives you the clearer, more granular privacy controls. You can switch off Improve the model for everyone, use Temporary Chat, manage memory separately, export your data, and delete chats or your account. Meta AI has an important boundary of its own: Meta says private messages with friends and family are not used to train its AIs unless someone in the conversation deliberately shares them with an AI feature. However, Meta AI is embedded in Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, so its privacy implications depend on your Meta account, public posts, AI interactions and location. Meta’s cited objection process is specifically described for people in the European Union.
Neither service is “private” in the abstract. The practical question is what data can be used for training, what is kept, what you can turn off, and which plan or region applies to you.

If your priority is a visible training switch, a separate temporary mode and independent memory controls, ChatGPT is the easier service to configure. If you mainly want an assistant inside WhatsApp or Instagram, Meta AI may be more convenient, but you must evaluate it together with the privacy settings and public-content exposure of that Meta account.

AI privacy has several separate layers. A service may process text to answer your prompt, retain a record so you can find it later, use conversations to improve future models, create a profile or memory for personalization, or receive information from the platform where the assistant is built in. A single “private” label cannot describe all of those activities.

- Processing: the service receives the content needed to generate a response. This is different from using the content to train a future model.
- Training: conversations or other content may be used to improve models, subject to the service’s settings, plan and regional rules.
- Retention: a conversation can remain in history or on the provider’s systems even when it is excluded from training.
- Memory: a product may save selected facts or preferences for later personalization. Memory is not the same thing as training.
- Platform context: an assistant inside a social network is surrounded by account information, public posts, contacts and app-level permissions.
The rest of the comparison keeps those layers separate so a setting is not mistaken for a promise it does not make.
Training use and opt-out clarity
ChatGPT: a named switch for new conversations
OpenAI’s current data-controls documentation says you can turn off Improve the model for everyone. After you opt out, new conversations and tasks are not used to train OpenAI models. This is a forward-looking control: it does not erase conversations that are already saved in your history.
The wording matters. The setting controls model improvement, not whether ChatGPT must receive a prompt to answer it, and not whether an existing chat remains stored. If you want an old conversation gone, delete that conversation or use the separate account-deletion process.
Meta AI: AI interactions and public Meta content
Meta’s 2025 EU newsroom announcement says that, in the EU, it would begin training AI models on people’s interactions with AI at Meta and on public content shared by adults on Meta products. The announcement says EU users receive a notice and a form through which they can object to their data being used for training.
That is meaningful evidence of an objection route, but it is not a universal promise for every country. The announcement specifically describes the EU process. Outside the EU, availability, wording and legal mechanisms may differ, so check the notice and privacy choices shown for your account.

Meta AI also runs inside several products rather than as an isolated chatbot. An interaction in Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp or Messenger should be considered alongside the public posts and account settings of that product. A setting that affects one service may not answer every question about another service in the Meta family.
Which approach is clearer?
ChatGPT is clearer for an ordinary consumer who wants to make one explicit choice about future model training. Meta’s disclosures explain categories of data and a regional objection procedure, but the decision is more dependent on where you live and which Meta product you use. That does not prove that every ChatGPT interaction is less sensitive or that every Meta interaction is more exposed; it means the controls are presented differently.
Memory, history and Temporary Chat
What Temporary Chat does
OpenAI describes Temporary Chat as a mode in which chats do not appear in your chat history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve OpenAI models while temporary. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
“Temporary” therefore does not mean instant destruction at the moment you close the window. It means the conversation is excluded from the normal history and memory behavior and from model improvement under the documented conditions, while a limited safety retention period may still apply.
How memory differs from training
ChatGPT’s memory or personalization control is separate from the model-improvement control. You can turn memory off without turning off the training setting, or turn off training while leaving personalization enabled. Treat them as two decisions:

- Use the model-improvement setting when you do not want new conversations used to improve OpenAI models.
- Use memory or personalization settings when you do not want the assistant to retain selected facts for future replies.
- Use Temporary Chat when you want one conversation to avoid history, memory updates and model improvement together, subject to the possible 30-day safety retention.
What Meta AI’s cited disclosures establish
The cited Meta materials establish rules about private messages, AI interactions and public content, but they do not describe a matching, universal Temporary Chat mode with the same stated effects on history, memory and training. Do not assume that starting a new thread in a Meta app creates the same privacy boundary as ChatGPT Temporary Chat.
Can Meta AI read your WhatsApp or Instagram messages?
Meta says: “We do not use the content of your private messages with friends and family to train our AIs unless the user or someone in the chat chooses to share those messages with our AIs.” This is a statement about use for AI training, not a guarantee that no Meta system can process message data for any other product function.
The practical boundary is whether someone deliberately brings the private conversation into an AI feature. For example, if a participant asks Meta AI to work with text, images or another item from a chat, that content has been shared with the AI feature and falls under the applicable AI processing and retention terms. A private message that remains a normal friend-and-family exchange is described by Meta as excluded from AI training unless it is shared in that way.
Instagram and Facebook public posts are different from private messages. Meta’s filing says publicly shared Facebook and Instagram posts, along with content from chats with Meta AIs such as photos and text, are part of training data. Public visibility and AI sharing should therefore be treated as separate choices.
Platform and geography change the answer
Meta AI is inseparable from the Meta account
Meta AI can appear through Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. The assistant is therefore connected to the account, app permissions and content environment in which you invoke it. Before sharing sensitive information, inspect the privacy and audience settings for that specific app, not only a general Meta AI screen.

Review who can see a post before treating it as private, and avoid assuming that a message is covered by the private-message boundary after you copy it into an AI prompt. If several people participate in a chat, any participant who chooses to share content with an AI feature can change the context in which that content is processed.
The EU objection route is regional
The EU announcement describes a notice and objection form for EU users. That evidence should not be presented as a worldwide opt-out. If you are elsewhere, look for the privacy notice and controls displayed for your country and account. If you move between regions, the available rights and wording may change.
ChatGPT controls also depend on plan
OpenAI distinguishes consumer ChatGPT from managed products. OpenAI says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare workspaces and the API is not used to improve models by default. Workspace administrators, contracts and jurisdiction can add rules that do not exist on a personal account.
Do not infer that a personal ChatGPT setting automatically applies to a company workspace, or that a business default applies to a consumer account. Select the correct product before relying on a privacy statement.

Opting out is not deleting
Turning off Improve the model for everyone does not delete saved ChatGPT chats. To remove a conversation, use the delete control for that chat; to remove the account, use the documented account-deletion process. Export is a separate option if you need a copy of your data before deleting anything.
Temporary Chat reduces normal persistence but may leave a copy for up to 30 days for safety. That qualification belongs with the feature’s promise: it is not a claim of immediate erasure.
OpenAI’s advertising statement
OpenAI says, “OpenAI does not sell your data or share your ChatGPT conversations with advertisers.” That statement concerns ChatGPT conversations and should not be stretched into a claim about every OpenAI product, third-party integration or device on which you access the service.
Meta deletion is product-specific
Meta’s cited disclosures do not establish one universal deletion timetable for every AI interaction across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. Use the controls and privacy terms for the particular Meta account and app involved. Deleting a social post, deleting a chat and objecting to AI training are different actions.

- Turn off future model improvement. Open ChatGPT settings, go to Data Controls, and switch off Improve the model for everyone. This applies to new conversations and tasks; it does not remove saved chats.
- Choose Temporary Chat for sensitive one-off work. Start a new conversation and select the Temporary Chat option in the chat interface. Confirm that the temporary indicator is active before entering the information.
- Review memory separately. In settings, open the memory or personalization controls. Turn memory off if you do not want facts from conversations used for future personalization. This choice is independent of model improvement.
- Clean up existing history. Delete individual chats you no longer need. If you require a record first, use the export-data control before deletion.
- Check the account type. If you are using Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare or the API, read the workspace or service terms. OpenAI says those categories are not used to improve models by default, but administrative and contractual settings still matter.
- Minimize what you submit. Remove names, account numbers, passwords, access tokens, medical identifiers and confidential documents when a less specific prompt will work.
These steps address different risks. A training opt-out does not erase history, memory controls do not delete a conversation, and deletion does not retroactively control information that another person has copied elsewhere.
How to use Meta AI more cautiously
- Identify the app and account. Note whether you are using Meta AI in Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or Messenger. The surrounding account and audience settings are part of the privacy decision.
- Read the notice shown in your region. Meta’s EU announcement describes a notice and objection form for EU users. Follow the current in-product or account-level instructions rather than assuming that an EU process applies elsewhere.
- Separate private chats from AI prompts. Keep sensitive friend-and-family messages out of AI features unless every participant understands that the content is being shared with the assistant.
- Audit public content. Review the audience for Facebook and Instagram posts. Meta says public posts by adults are among the content categories used for training in the cited EU disclosure.
- Limit personal details in prompts. Do not provide passwords, financial credentials, identity documents or confidential workplace information merely because the assistant is inside a familiar messaging app.
- Check each product’s deletion controls. Removing a message, post or account action may not be the same as objecting to training or clearing an AI interaction.
Which assistant is safer for common situations?

Privacy mistakes that settings cannot fix
- Putting secrets into a prompt: a training opt-out does not make a password or identity document safe to disclose.
- Confusing “not trained” with “not stored”: ChatGPT explicitly separates model improvement from saved history, and Temporary Chat can still involve up to 30 days of safety retention.
- Assuming a private app equals a private AI: Meta AI inherits the account and audience context of the Meta product where it runs.
- Forwarding someone else’s message: Meta’s private-message statement includes an exception when a user or someone in the chat chooses to share content with an AI feature.
- Using the wrong account type: consumer, business, education and API defaults are not interchangeable.
- Deleting only one copy: removing a chat from your screen does not control screenshots, exports or copies held by other participants.
A practical decision rule
Choose ChatGPT when control transparency is your deciding factor: it gives you an explicit model-improvement switch, a separately managed memory setting, Temporary Chat and documented export and deletion actions. Choose Meta AI when its placement in Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or Messenger is essential, but treat the assistant as part of that broader Meta account rather than as a separate, sealed chatbot. In either service, minimize sensitive input and attach every privacy decision to the exact plan, app and country involved.
