Then check that the forwarded stream contains both audio and video, validate the configuration actually in use, and use MediaMTX logs to identify which connection is failing. There is no single fix for every disconnect: the fault may be at the source publisher, MediaMTX’s forward, or the path to YouTube.
First identify which connection is dropping
A MediaMTX-to-YouTube setup has more than one link: a publisher sends media into MediaMTX, and MediaMTX forwards it to YouTube. YouTube may also stop receiving data even while the local publisher still appears connected. Pin down which stage fails before changing settings.

- Note the exact time YouTube stops receiving data or the stream disconnects.
- Check MediaMTX logs around that time for publisher connection open/close events and errors on the forward.
- Determine whether the source publisher disconnected, the MediaMTX forward failed, or the local stream remained healthy while YouTube stopped receiving it.
- Make one change at a time and compare the logs and YouTube status at the next failure.
MediaMTX supports connection hooks and logs that can help trace these events; the right interpretation depends on your setup. A reconnect message alone is not a diagnosis.
Check the YouTube destination and stream key
In YouTube’s current live setup, copy the Stream URL and stream key and compare them with the destination configured for MediaMTX. MediaMTX’s forwarding guide includes an example URL but warns that the URL may no longer be current, so do not rely on a copied example as your live endpoint.

- Check for a stale or mistyped URL, key, or protocol prefix.
- Make sure the destination and key belong to the live setup you intend to use.
- If you replace or reset the key in YouTube, update the value MediaMTX uses as well.
For transport encryption, MediaMTX’s forwarding example recommends changing rtmp:// to rtmps://. Confirm the current endpoint and certificate handling for your installed MediaMTX version. The documentation discusses a certificate fingerprint for an example endpoint whose certificate was reported invalid at the time; that fingerprint should not be treated as permanently valid, and disabling certificate checks is not a safe general fix.
Confirm that the forwarded stream has audio and video
YouTube requires both an audio track and a video track. MediaMTX’s official forwarding guide warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. Check the tracks at the forward output, not just at the original source: a track can be absent or lost between ingest and forwarding.

- Verify that both tracks are present in the stream MediaMTX is sending to YouTube.
- If a track is missing, inspect the publisher input and any processing or forwarding steps that could remove it.
- Do not assume that a locally visible video picture proves YouTube is receiving a valid audio-and-video stream.
The available MediaMTX guidance establishes the need for both tracks, but does not establish a codec requirement for every account and setup. Check the requirements shown in your own YouTube live setup rather than guessing at a codec change.

MediaMTX can receive configuration through a file, environment variables, or the Control API. Editing a file does not necessarily change the running configuration if another source overrides it or the process is reading a different file.

- Identify the configuration source used by the running MediaMTX process.
- Check the forward path, destination, key, and relevant settings in that active configuration.
- Run MediaMTX with
--validate-confto check a configuration file before relying on it. - If you use Docker, check the mounted configuration path and environment variables; environment variables can override configuration parameters.
- Use documentation and configuration options for your installed release. The sample configuration on the project’s main branch may not match older versions.

Use logs to narrow down the cause
MediaMTX’s example configuration provides error, warn, info, and debug verbosity levels. Start with the logs available at the failure time; temporarily increase detail when they do not show enough to distinguish a publisher issue from a forwarding issue. Check the logging options supported by your installed release before changing them.

- Correlate connection open and close messages with the time YouTube stopped receiving data.
- Look for forward errors separately from publisher disconnects.
- If the logs show timeouts, resets, or transport failures, investigate outbound connectivity and stability on the MediaMTX host.
- Return verbosity to its normal setting after diagnosis if the extra log volume is not needed.
When to use FFmpeg instead of MediaMTX forwarding
MediaMTX’s forwarding feature is not the only architecture. Its documentation recommends using FFmpeg through a run hook when the destination requires transcoding, filtering, or a protocol that the forward feature does not support. In that arrangement, FFmpeg owns the outbound connection and its logs become part of the diagnosis; you also need to supervise the process and its restarts.
This is an alternative when you have a specific processing or protocol need, not a universal remedy for disconnects. If the current forward fails because of a wrong key, missing track, or unstable network, switching processes does not by itself correct that fault.

Investigate network or hardware only when evidence points there
If MediaMTX logs show a transport failure, test the host’s outbound connection and stability. Otherwise, avoid treating a new cable, router, capture card, or encoder as a default fix: a hardware change is useful only when a diagnosed fault implicates that component.
A reported reconnection issue involving an RTMP publisher is an individual case, not proof that publisher override or reconnect behavior causes YouTube forwarding failures generally. Diagnose the failing hop in your own setup rather than applying a setting change based on a superficially similar report.
