You can use an old PC to send a live feed to YouTube with MediaMTX, but first decide whether that computer will encode video or only relay an already encoded stream. A relay has a different workload from live encoding, and MediaMTX’s documentation does not specify minimum PC requirements or guarantee that a particular machine can encode reliably. The basic route is source or encoder → MediaMTX path → YouTube over RTMPS, using the current ingest URL and a private stream key.
What MediaMTX does—and what the old PC must do
MediaMTX is a media server and proxy for routing real-time audio and video. It is available for Linux, Windows, and macOS as a standalone executable; Docker is another documented installation route. In this setup, a camera, screen capture, or other encoder publishes to a MediaMTX path, and MediaMTX forwards that path to YouTube.

The PC’s suitability depends on its role. If it captures and encodes live camera or screen video, its CPU or supported hardware encoder must handle that work at the chosen resolution and frame rate. If it only relays an already encoded stream, it is not doing the same encoding work. No minimum specifications for this exact workflow are established in the MediaMTX documentation, so there is no reliable universal “old PC” threshold.

Before configuring MediaMTX, confirm that the channel can go live. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the current stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube describes the key as the password and address for the feed; keep it private. See Manage live stream settings.
- Use the current URL shown there rather than assuming a documentation example will remain current. Do not share the key in screenshots, public configuration files, or messages.
Install and configure MediaMTX
Install the version for your PC
Download the standalone MediaMTX binary that matches the PC’s operating system and architecture, or use Docker if the host supports it. The MediaMTX installation guide documents both routes. If you need reproducible behavior, use a specific release rather than changing versions unexpectedly.
Add a forwarding path
MediaMTX’s documented forwarding example uses a path-level destination in the configuration:

The # separates the destination URL from the key in MediaMTX’s example syntax. Follow the current MediaMTX forwarding documentation for the configuration format and any certificate requirements: that page notes its example URL should be checked for currency, and its example has included a certificate fingerprint because of a certificate validation issue reported at the time. Do not reuse an old fingerprint without checking the current documentation and conditions.

Start MediaMTX and publish to the path
Start the MediaMTX executable or container using the configuration file, then configure your source or encoder to publish to the MediaMTX path named mypath. The exact publishing address and settings depend on the source and protocol you choose; use the corresponding MediaMTX protocol documentation and the settings exposed by your encoder. Once the source is publishing, MediaMTX forwards that path to the YouTube destination.

Ensure the outbound YouTube feed contains both video and audio. MediaMTX warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. If your production is intentionally silent, include an audio track rather than assuming a video-only feed will work.
Choose encoder settings for the PC and connection
Use a codec and bitrate supported by your encoder and appropriate to the resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its current H.264 guidance lists these recommended video bitrates:

Run a speed test under conditions similar to the planned broadcast and check sustained upload performance. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom and notes that other users or devices sharing the connection can constrain a stream. India does not by itself determine available upload speed or require a different encoder setting. Measure the actual connection at the PC’s location. If Wi-Fi is unstable and the PC can connect by Ethernet, a wired network connection is a reasonable troubleshooting option, but it cannot guarantee a particular bandwidth.
Run a representative test
- Use the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, and network connection.
- Test with motion and audio similar to what you expect to stream; a static screen alone may not reveal the same encoding or network behavior.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and check for dropped frames or connection warnings before depending on the setup for a live event.
