For a first-time DIYer with few tools, a mechanics tool set is usually the simpler place to start; if you already own useful ratchets, sockets, or wrenches, buying only the pieces you need can avoid duplication. Neither route is automatically cheaper, tougher, or more complete. Compare the actual sizes, drive types, socket depths, tool categories, and storage against the work you expect to do.
When a mechanics tool set makes more sense
A bundle is convenient when you are building a toolbox from scratch and want common tools kept together. Depending on the model, a set may combine ratchets, sockets, extensions, and other accessories—and some include combination wrenches as well. Check the contents rather than relying on the piece count: the CRAFTSMAN 105-, 308-, and 728-piece sets below cover notably different assortments.

That is the manufacturer’s product description, not independent comparative testing. The page states a full lifetime warranty; check the current terms for the exact product and seller.

A bundle with more categories
The CRAFTSMAN CMMT45938 308-piece set is described as a three-drive mechanics set for automotive, general construction, and DIY repairs. Its listed categories include sockets, ratchets, combination wrenches, drive accessories, and plastic-tray storage. The page states a lifetime warranty. The listing summary does not establish every size or depth in the assortment, so verify the detailed inventory before buying.
A very broad assortment
The CRAFTSMAN CMMT72728 728-piece set illustrates how broad a bundle can be: its page lists SAE and metric tools, sockets and bit sockets in 1/4-, 3/8-, 1/2-, and 3/4-inch drives, impact sockets, ratchets, combination, ratcheting, and specialty wrenches, plus accessories. It also states a full lifetime warranty. This breadth does not mean most DIYers need every included category.

When buying sockets and wrenches separately makes more sense
Separate purchases are appealing if you have a useful collection already, or if you know exactly which gaps are holding up your work. You can choose the specific sizes, drive sizes, depths, and wrench types you need instead of buying another ratchet or a large assortment that overlaps with your toolbox.

Before shopping, take inventory. Note which sockets are SAE or metric, which drive sizes you own, whether you have both shallow and deep sockets, and which wrench types are missing. Then match that list to the jobs you actually expect to tackle. The choice is about fit and duplication; there is no comparative price evidence here showing that separate purchases always cost less.

How to compare a set with separate tools
- Inventory: List your ratchets, sockets, and wrenches first. A public r/Tools discussion includes personal experiences about duplication and keeping separate boxes; treat those as individual experiences, not a general finding.
- Size coverage: Compare the actual SAE and metric sizes you need. A higher piece count alone does not tell you whether a set contains the right sizes.
- Drive size and depth: Check which drives are included and whether you need shallow, deep, or both socket types. The 105-piece CRAFTSMAN set explicitly lists standard and deep sockets plus 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch ratchets.
- Tool categories: Decide whether your work calls for combination or ratcheting wrenches, impact sockets, specialty tools, or bits—or only sockets and a ratchet. Bundles may include categories you do not need.
- Storage: Compare the supplied case or tray with your toolbox and how you will carry the tools. The examples include a blow-molded case and plastic tray storage; their relative size and portability have not been measured here.
- Warranty and price: Check current terms and prices for the exact model and seller. A stated warranty is not proof of comparative tool quality, and no like-for-like price comparison establishes which buying route is cheaper.
What the product examples do—and do not—show
These listings show that a mechanics set can range from a compact assortment of common sockets and accessories to a large combination of socket, impact, and wrench categories. They are examples of manufacturer-listed contents, not independent tests of performance, durability, value, or completeness for every job.
DEWALT’s official search-indexed listing for the DWMT45007 200-piece set describes ratchets and sockets, accessories, hex keys, a bit driver, and a storage case. Because the live page was not accessible when that listing was checked, confirm current contents with the manufacturer before relying on those details.

A quick decision rule
- Starting with few or no tools? Look for a set that covers the sockets, ratchets, depths, and other categories your planned jobs call for, all in storage you can use.
- Already own a useful collection? Identify its precise gaps and buy those components separately rather than assuming a bigger bundle is a better fit.
- Unsure whether a large set is right? Compare its complete inventory with your needs before paying for breadth you may not use; piece count alone is not a useful measure of fit.
