The easiest way to explore the Milky Way in 3D is to start with ESA’s browser-based Gaia EDR3 all-sky map for a quick visual overview, then use ESA’s guided galaxy tour to understand its structure. For hands-on navigation through scientific data, install Gaia Sky and download a dataset. You do not need VR or specialist equipment for any of those starting points.
One important caveat: no spacecraft has photographed the entire Milky Way from outside. We observe it from within, so whole-Galaxy views are data-based reconstructions or artist impressions, not exterior photographs.

Start with ESA’s Gaia EDR3 map for a quick overview
ESA’s interactive Gaia EDR3 map presents an all-sky view of the brightness and colour of 1.8 billion stars observed by Gaia. That figure describes the stars represented in this map, not every star in the Milky Way.

The map is a projection of the whole sky, not a free-flight 3D model. Its bright horizontal band is the Galactic plane seen edge-on. Dark gaps within the band are places where foreground gas and dust block light from more distant stars. The central region looks crowded and bright because many stars lie along that line of sight. Zooming can also reveal star clusters and galaxies beyond the Milky Way.

The galaxy night light projector has a built-in Bluetooth speaker that connects quickly and offers 20 volume levels from 0%-100%, giving you flexible sound for bedtime or room atmosphere. For quiet evenings, the projector night light works as a sound machine with light, or you can return to internal audio with the remote or body controls for a phone-free setup.
- 【Focusable Coated-Glass Optics】A high-definition optical lens, multi-element wide-angle optics, and fully coated glass help produce crisp moving pictures on walls or ceilings. Turn the focus control until the image looks sharp at your chosen distance, then adjust placement as needed for the room. The plug-and-play hd star projector is designed for easy desktop setup, and the hd star projector supports clear viewing across space, ocean, animal, and holiday scenes. As a 3d projector for bedroom walls or ceilings, it looks best in a dim room on a smooth surface after focus is refined for distance and angle.
- 【Remote Control & 270° Aiming】Stay in bed or on the sofa while the infrared remote changes scenes, pauses playback, selects loop or sequential play, adjusts volume, switches internal audio or Bluetooth, sets the timer, changes brightness, and turns green stars on or off. The lamp body tilts manually through 270°, and the base rotates horizontally, so the ceiling projector for bedroom use can be aimed across a wall, ceiling, or corner without drilling or wall mounting. Use the star projector for ceiling displays, then refine focus; once aimed, this room projector for bedroom use is easy to operate from a 4-5 m line-of-sight distance.
ESA’s page gives several scale-setting estimates: Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the centre, has a mass of four million Suns; the bulge hosts about ten billion stars; and the bar’s half-length is about 10,000 light-years. These are figures reported on ESA’s guide, not measurements made by the interactive itself.

Gaia Sky is an open-source, real-time 3D astronomy visualization platform for Windows, Linux and macOS. It is the strongest option here if you want to move around a scientific visualization and inspect data rather than zoom into a prepared projection. The software is not a complete experience by itself: you also need to download datasets, such as catalogues, models or textures, through its dataset manager or separately.

- Install Gaia Sky using the download for your operating system.
- Open its dataset manager and choose a catalogue or other dataset suited to what you want to view.
- Download the selected data, then load it in the application. The available view and the resources it uses depend on the dataset.
VR is optional
Gaia Sky supports immersive viewing through OpenXR on Linux and Windows, but VR adds requirements beyond the desktop application. Supported hardware, runtime compatibility and performance depend on your system and the dataset; some lower-detail or level-of-detail catalogues may perform poorly in VR. Consult the current VR documentation before buying equipment. A standard computer screen is enough to use Gaia Sky.
Use GAVS when you want to examine catalogue patterns
The Gaia Archive Visualization Service is aimed more at data exploration than a guided tour. ESA’s Gaia user documentation describes tools for one-dimensional histograms, two-dimensional scatter and binned plots, three-dimensional scatter plots, all-sky source-density maps and integrated-luminosity maps. It is a better fit for investigating distributions and catalogue data than for casually flying through a rendered Galaxy. The documentation describes Gaia DR3 and may not reflect every change to the live archive interface.

Try NASA’s guided browser experiences
NASA’s interactive experience index lists “Tour the Galaxy” and the Hubble-based “Roam the Milky Way.” These are additional browser-based options if you prefer a prepared experience to installing a data visualization program. The index alone does not establish the detailed features of each experience, so check the linked experience itself to see what it currently offers.
What a 3D Milky Way view can—and cannot—show
Gaia measures stars from within our Galaxy. ESA explains that this vantage point means “we can’t take a picture of the Milky Way as a whole.” A face-on or exterior-looking view therefore combines observations with modelling and artistic choices; it is not a camera image made from outside the Galaxy.
Gaia’s observations ran from 27 July 2014 to 15 January 2025. ESA says the mission gathered more than three trillion observations of two billion stars and other objects during that period. That does not mean Gaia mapped every star in the Milky Way. ESA’s January 2025 account also describes how Gaia data informed understanding of the central bar and spiral arms, including evidence for more than two arms, less prominent than earlier models suggested, and a bar more inclined relative to the Sun.

Quick Recap
Which option should you choose?
- For a quick first look: open the Gaia EDR3 all-sky map and notice the plane, dust lanes and crowded centre.
- For an explanation of the parts: follow ESA’s guide from the centre through the bulge and disc.
- For hands-on 3D navigation: install Gaia Sky and select a dataset; the separate data download is part of setup.
- For plots and catalogue distributions: try GAVS, keeping in mind that its documented focus is analytical rather than tour-like.
- For an immersive view: use Gaia Sky VR only if you already have compatible hardware or specifically want VR, and verify current requirements first.
