1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLinear switches move smoothly, tactile switches add a noticeable bump, and clicky switches combine that bump with an audible click. Those labels describe feedback—not a switch’s exact force, travel, noise level, or compatibility. To choose well, compare the specifications of the particular switch model and consider where and how you use your keyboard.
What is the difference between linear, tactile, and clicky switches?
A mechanical switch sits beneath each key and actuates as you press it. The main difference among these categories is what you feel and hear during that press. CHERRY’s descriptions distinguish the categories by their feedback: linear switches move without a tactile bump or audible click; tactile switches have a noticeable actuation point; and clicky switches add an audible click to tactile feedback.

| Switch type | What it feels like | What it sounds like | CHERRY example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linear | Smooth travel without a distinct tactile bump | No click mechanism by category, though the keyboard still makes some sound | MX Red or MX Black |
| Tactile | A noticeable bump or actuation point | No added audible click in a non-clicky tactile model | MX Brown |
| Clicky | A tactile bump plus an audible click | Click sound is part of the intended feedback | MX Blue |
These are feel-and-feedback categories, not a complete specification. Two switches in the same category can differ in how much force they require, how far they travel, and whether they include noise-damping features.
How should you compare switch specifications?
Use the exact model’s published specifications rather than assuming all switches in a category feel alike. CHERRY’s examples show how force and travel vary across its MX models:

These are CHERRY-published specifications for the named variants, not universal values for linear, tactile, or clicky switches and not independent test results. CHERRY does not show a publication date on the cited pages. Its durability figures are manufacturer ratings, not findings from an independent lifetime test. See CHERRY’s DIY keyboard guide and its MX switch product information.
- Actuation force is the force specified for reaching the actuation point. A higher figure means more force is specified for that model; it does not by itself tell you whether the switch will feel better for your typing.
- Pre-travel is the distance the key moves before actuation. Compare the stated distance for the exact variant.
- Total travel is the full key movement specified for a switch. Do not treat pre-travel and total travel as interchangeable measurements.
- Damping can change how much noise a switch produces. Check whether the particular version is described as silent or noise-damped rather than relying on its category name.
Which mechanical keyboard switch should you choose?
Start with the feedback you want, then check sound, force, travel, and keyboard compatibility before buying.

Choose linear if you prefer smooth travel
Linear is a reasonable starting point if you want a press without a distinct tactile bump or click. It does not mean the switch is silent, and the category alone does not tell you how heavy or long-travel a particular model is.

A non-clicky tactile switch gives you a noticeable actuation point without adding the click mechanism characteristic of clicky switches. It may suit someone who wants more feedback than smooth linear travel but does not want an intentional click sound.

Choose clicky if you want audible feedback
Clicky switches are designed to produce an audible click alongside tactile feedback. That sound may be distracting to other people in a shared room, office, or call. Consider the people and conditions around your keyboard, not just your own preference.
Check compatibility before replacing switches
Do not assume that a replacement switch or sampler will fit every mechanical keyboard. Confirm that the switch’s format is compatible with your specific board and that any sampler represents the format you intend to try. The cited CHERRY pages do not establish universal interchangeability.

Will linear, tactile, or clicky switches be quiet?
“Linear” and “tactile” do not guarantee a quiet keyboard. Clicky switches add an audible click by design, but the overall sound also depends on the keyboard, keycaps, typing style, desk, and room. CHERRY lists variants it describes as silent or noise-damped, but the cited product descriptions do not provide independent sound measurements. If noise matters, look for model-specific damping information and, where possible, listen to the exact switch in a comparable keyboard and room.

If you are unsure, try the switch in person or use a sampler before buying a full set. CHERRY lists an MX Experience Box containing 10 switches. The cited listing does not establish its exact current mix of variants or its availability through any particular retailer, so check the contents and the keyboard-format compatibility before ordering. A sampler is useful only if it includes the types you want to compare.
