Secure Raspberry Pi Connect by protecting the Raspberry Pi ID account that controls access: use a unique password, enable TOTP two-factor authentication, save the recovery code, and review linked devices. Connect does not use a separate password for each Pi, so changing the local login password on a device is not a substitute for securing your Raspberry Pi ID.
Secure the Raspberry Pi ID account used by Connect
Raspberry Pi Connect sign-in uses Raspberry Pi ID. Registration requires an email address and password, followed by email verification. The current Connect guide lists Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm or later as a requirement. See the Raspberry Pi Connect guide and the Raspberry Pi ID guide.

Choose a long password that is unique to this account; do not reuse a password from another site. A password manager can help generate and retain unique passwords, but Raspberry Pi’s reviewed documentation does not mandate a particular length, character mix, or password manager.

Save the recovery code before enabling two-factor authentication
Raspberry Pi ID supports time-based one-time password (TOTP) two-factor authentication. Before turning it on, decide where you will keep the recovery code: Raspberry Pi’s guide says it is the only way to bypass 2FA if you lose both your phone and 2FA app. Store it somewhere secure and separate from the phone, rather than in an unprotected photo or note.
Enable TOTP two-factor authentication
- Sign in to your Raspberry Pi ID account and open the Two-factor authentication setting.
- Use a TOTP-generating app to scan the QR code shown during setup. Raspberry Pi gives Authy and Google Authenticator as examples and notes iCloud Keychain integration on macOS and iOS; these are examples, not an exclusive list or endorsement.
- Enter the six-digit TOTP displayed by the app to complete setup.
- Save the recovery code presented on the confirmation screen in the secure location you chose.
Follow the current Raspberry Pi ID instructions if the account setting or screens differ.
Review linked devices and respond to an unexpected notification
Connect emails you when a device is linked. Sign in to Connect and check the Devices tab regularly; each Pi should be yours and have a name you recognize.

If you receive a device-link notification you did not expect, or see an unfamiliar Pi, Raspberry Pi’s guidance is to change your Raspberry Pi ID password immediately and remove the device using the Connect device-removal instructions. Do both: the documentation does not say that changing the password automatically unlinks an already connected device. Consider enabling 2FA as well. See the Connect guide for current device controls.

Limit Connect to the access you need
Connect can be switched on or off, and its menu lets you sign in or out and enable or disable remote shell and screen sharing. The current documentation says Connect is included in full Raspberry Pi OS variants but disabled by default; the Lite variant is shell-only. These details and menu labels may vary with OS and service versions, so check the current Connect documentation.

Screen sharing requires Wayland and is unavailable on Lite or X-based systems. If you do not need remote shell or screen sharing, disable the relevant access option rather than leaving it enabled by default in your own setup.

Raspberry Pi says Connect encrypts the connection and normally connects the Pi directly to the browser. If a direct connection cannot be established, Connect can use a relay; Raspberry Pi says it retains only operational metadata needed to run Connect in relay cases. That statement describes the vendor’s handling of relay metadata, not a broader guarantee about every security risk. The reviewed documentation does not establish encryption implementation details, independent audit results, or protection against compromised devices or browsers.
