How to Choose zram, zswap, or a Swapfile on Linux

zram keeps compressed swap in RAM, zswap caches pages ahead of backing swap, and a swapfile stores swap on disk. Choose based on your storage needs, workload, and filesystem.

Choose zram for compressed swap held in RAM, zswap when you have disk-backed swap and want a compressed cache in front of it, or a swapfile when you need swap space stored on disk without repartitioning. They solve different problems: zram uses memory, zswap can defer some backing-device writes, and a swapfile provides the backing storage itself. No option is universally fastest; workload, CPU, storage, filesystem, and distribution configuration all matter.

How the three options differ

Option Where swapped pages go What it requires Main trade-off
zram Compressed in physical RAM on a RAM-based block device Kernel zram support and device setup Uses CPU to compress pages and consumes some RAM, but does not need a disk swap area for its basic operation
zswap First into a compressed RAM pool; pages can be evicted to backing swap when the pool reaches its limit A configured backing swap device or file, plus zswap support Can reduce some swap I/O at the cost of CPU and RAM for the compressed pool
Swapfile To disk through a regular file prepared as a swap area A correctly allocated file on a supported filesystem Provides disk-backed swap, but filesystem behavior and allocation rules can prevent activation

The kernel describes zswap as a “lightweight compressed cache for swap pages.” That distinction is useful: zswap is not a replacement for backing swap, while zram’s basic swap device is backed by RAM.

Choose based on what you need

Choose zram for compressed-memory swap

Use zram when you want a swap device that compresses pages and keeps them in memory, and you do not specifically need a disk-backed destination. The kernel’s zram module creates devices such as /dev/zram0; pages written to the device are compressed and stored in RAM. The Linux kernel zram guide shows initializing a device with mkswap and activating it with swapon.

Do not read the configured zram disk size as RAM already reserved in full. The device’s storage grows as pages are written, although an idle device has a small cost. Actual memory consumption depends on the data and its compressibility. The kernel guide says there is little point making a zram device larger than twice system memory because it expects a 2:1 compression ratio. Treat that as the kernel’s sizing heuristic, not a guaranteed ratio or usable-capacity promise.

The guide also documents optional writeback for idle or incompressible pages. Its current documented backing-device interface requires a partition; ordinary zram does not automatically overflow to an arbitrary disk or swapfile. The guide notes potential flash wear and a configurable writeback budget, so writeback should be considered separately from basic zram swap.

Choose zswap when you need backing swap

Use zswap if you have a disk-backed swap area and want a compressed in-memory cache in front of it. As pages are being swapped out, zswap attempts to compress them into a dynamically allocated pool. When that pool reaches its configured maximum, pages can be evicted to the backing device. This can reduce swap I/O, but compression adds CPU work and the pool consumes RAM.

The kernel zswap guide says the pool grows on demand and can be bounded with max_pool_percent. Whether zswap is enabled by default depends on kernel configuration; command-line options and runtime sysfs interfaces can control it. There is no universally appropriate pool percentage or compressor to prescribe without knowing the workload and system configuration.

Choose a swapfile for disk-backed swap without repartitioning

A swapfile is a regular file prepared with mkswap and enabled with swapon. It can also be configured to activate at boot through an /etc/fstab entry. This option makes sense when disk-backed swap is needed and the filesystem can provide a valid swap area.

The file’s allocation and filesystem matter. The upstream swapon(8) manual warns that files with holes and copy-on-write filesystems may be rejected because the kernel needs direct access to the file’s backing storage. It documents Btrfs swapfile support since Linux 5.0 when the file has the nocow attribute, and support for preallocated XFS swapfiles since Linux 4.18. The mkswap(8) manual says mkswap --file gained Btrfs nocow setup in util-linux 2.41. Check the manuals for your installed kernel and util-linux version before using a command copied from another system.

Quick decision guide

  • No disk swap, but want compressed-memory swap: evaluate zram.
  • Need disk-backed swap and want to reduce some writes or I/O: evaluate zswap together with a correctly configured backing swap area.
  • Need disk-backed swap without repartitioning: consider a swapfile if the filesystem supports it and the file can be allocated correctly.
  • Using Btrfs: verify kernel and util-linux versions and the nocow requirement before creating or enabling a swapfile.
  • Need hibernation: check your distribution’s current hibernation and resume setup; requirements are not established universally across distributions and configurations.
  • Considering zram writeback: account for the kernel guide’s current partition-only backing-device limit.

Can zram and zswap or disk swap be used together?

Some configurations can combine these mechanisms, but combining them does not automatically improve performance. Their behavior depends on distribution configuration and swap priorities, and the kernel documentation cited here does not establish a universal setup. Identify which swap areas are active and how the distribution orders them before adding another layer. In particular, zswap needs backing swap, while zram can itself be activated as a swap device.

Which option is fastest?

There is no universal winner established by the kernel guides or swap manuals. Both zram and zswap add compression work and trade CPU time for different memory and I/O behavior. The outcome depends on workload, compressor, available RAM, backing storage, and configuration. The cited sources do not provide a common controlled benchmark comparing all three options, so a general speed percentage or ranking would be misleading.

If performance is the deciding factor, monitor the statistics for the mechanism you use and test representative workloads on your own system. For zram, the kernel exposes statistics under /sys/block/zram<id>/, including original data size, compressed data size, and total allocated memory. These show how your workload behaves rather than promising a particular compression ratio for other systems.

Configuration depends on your distribution

The kernel guides explain mechanisms and interfaces, not a complete persistent setup for every distribution. The zram guide describes management through zramctl from util-linux as well as sysfs controls; the zswap guide documents kernel command-line and sysfs controls. Defaults and service-level setup can differ, so consult your distribution’s current documentation before changing boot configuration. For swapfiles, confirm filesystem support and allocation requirements before adding an /etc/fstab entry.
