A master boot record (MBR) is a legacy disk partitioning format: it records where partitions begin and how large they are, and it forms part of the traditional BIOS startup path. In Windows, MBR’s partition table also marks the active partition used to continue that boot process. It is not simply another name for a bootloader program.
What information does an MBR contain?
The MBR is a record at the start of a disk that includes a partition table describing the locations and lengths of partitions. Windows uses that information to map volumes, while a BIOS-based Windows boot arrangement uses the active-partition marker to identify where startup should continue. Microsoft describes the role of basic disk partition information; its BIOS/MBR partition guidance explains the active partition in that boot arrangement.

How many partitions can an MBR disk have?
The MBR partition table has four entries. In Windows, those entries can describe four primary partitions, or three primary partitions and one extended partition. The extended partition can contain logical drives, so the four-entry limit does not mean an MBR disk can contain only four volumes. This is the Windows-specific explanation in Microsoft’s Windows and GPT FAQ.

| Feature | MBR | GPT |
|---|---|---|
| Partition entries or capacity | Four partition-table entries; Windows describes MBR as limited to disks of 2 TB or smaller. | Windows 11 deployment guidance allows up to 128 partitions, and Microsoft says GPT can manage disks larger than 2 TB. |
| Windows system-disk boot guidance | Used in the legacy BIOS/MBR arrangement. | For Windows deployed to a UEFI device, the drive containing Windows must use GPT. |
These limits and requirements reflect Microsoft’s Windows documentation, not a universal specification for every operating system or disk implementation. GPT is the more suitable choice for the Windows system disk in a UEFI deployment. That does not mean every UEFI-capable machine is categorically unable to boot an MBR disk; firmware compatibility features and the specific operating-system setup matter. See Microsoft’s UEFI/GPT deployment guidance and disk partition scheme overview.

Do you need to convert an MBR disk?
No. Knowing what MBR means does not require changing a disk. Convert only when a concrete need—such as deploying Windows to a UEFI system disk or managing a disk beyond the size Microsoft documents for MBR—calls for it. Check that the target device, firmware mode, and Windows version support the intended setup, and make a current backup before changing a partition scheme.
Windows offers different conversion paths with different conditions. In the Disk Management procedure, Microsoft requires the disk to have no partitions or volumes before conversion. The MBR2GPT utility is a separate option for supported Windows system-disk scenarios; Microsoft documents it as converting without modifying or deleting data when its requirements are met. Do not treat the Disk Management requirement as a description of MBR2GPT, or assume that either method applies to every disk. Consult Microsoft’s Disk Management conversion instructions and MBR2GPT guidance for the exact workflow and prerequisites.
