Master Chief is John-117, a Spartan-II born on Eridanus II on March 7, 2511. His story begins with a military program created to suppress human rebellion, then becomes inseparable from the Covenant War and the discovery of the Halo rings. For a clear starting point, read Halo: The Fall of Reach for his origins, then use the dates below as landmarks—not as a complete chronology of every Halo story.
Who is Master Chief?
Master Chief is the familiar title of John-117, a Spartan-II and a senior enlisted member of the UNSC. Halo’s official Master Class overview gives his birthworld as Eridanus II and his birth date as March 7, 2511. It describes him as a skilled infantry tactician and a leader able to command groups ranging from fireteams to battalions.

What is Master Chief’s backstory?
John’s early career centered on SPARTAN-II training. The program was initially designed to thwart human rebellion and help stop a mounting civil war—not to fight the Covenant, who later became the defining enemy of his story. The official overview describes one early mission: locating and extracting Insurrectionist leader Colonel Robert Watts.

Where should you begin?
| Option | Best for | Scope and commitment |
|---|---|---|
| Halo: The Fall of Reach | Readers who want John-117’s origin as a story | Focused on the Master Chief, the SPARTAN-II program, Reach, and events leading to Halo. It is an origin narrative rather than a reference work. |
| Halo Encyclopedia | Readers who want a wider overview | A broad reference to Halo’s history and culture, developed with Dark Horse and written by members of the 343 Franchise Team. It is not a substitute for reading John’s origin as a narrative. |
The Fall of Reach was first released on October 30, 2001, before Halo: Combat Evolved. That is a publication date, not an in-universe event. Its early release helps explain why the novel is a useful entry point even for readers who first encountered Halo through the games.
For more John-117 and Blue Team fiction, Halo’s official book guide also lists Silent Storm, Oblivion, and Shadows of Reach. These are optional additions, not prerequisites for understanding the central game-era landmarks below. The same guide covers books, comics, games, and other media, so no short list can represent every story in the setting.

Major Halo timeline landmarks
The dates below are selected anchors from Halo’s official material. They mix in-universe events with one clearly labeled publication date; they are not a complete timeline of every game, novel, comic, or side story.
| Date | What happens | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| October 30, 2001 (publication) | Halo: The Fall of Reach is released, before Halo: Combat Evolved. | A real-world release date for the origin-focused novel, not a date in Halo’s fictional chronology. |
| September 19, 2552 | John-117 awakens from cryo aboard the Pillar of Autumn as Covenant forces prepare to assault the ship and UNSC forces are deployed to Installation 04. | This is the arrival at the first Halo ring and a key entry point into Halo: Combat Evolved. |
| October 2559 | In Shadows of Reach, the Master Chief and Blue Team return to Reach to recover assets, one year after Cortana unleashed the Guardians. | An optional novel-era bridge before Halo Infinite. |
| May 28–29, 2560 | Halo Infinite opens; Echo-216 recovers the Chief, and early fighting takes place on Zeta Halo. | The beginning of the game’s campaign-era conflict. |
| May 29–30, 2560 | The “Sequence” events unfold as the Chief accesses four beam towers. | A more detailed campaign landmark for players following the mission sequence. |
| May 30, 2560 | The Chief enters the command-spire sequence; the timeline includes the House of Reckoning and Escharum’s defeat. | A marker for the campaign’s late conflict. |
| May 31–June 3, 2560 | Events in the Silent Auditorium span these dates. Temporal compression means three days pass outside while the Chief is inside for a few hours. | This accounts for the apparent time jump; it is not described as ordinary time travel. |
Halo’s official timeline entry for September 19, 2552 establishes the Pillar of Autumn awakening. The game-era dates for Halo Infinite come from the official timeline clarification. For the novel-era bridge, see the official book guide.

Why the timeline is only a guide
Halo is a transmedia story: games, novels, comics, and other media all add to its setting. The dates here orient readers around John-117’s origins, the first Halo ring, and the Halo Infinite campaign, but leave out many events—including much of the chronology of Halo 2 and Halo 3 and numerous side stories. Use the official book guide to explore further rather than treating this short selection as a canon index.
