Wind turbine blades can be recycled, repurposed, or sent to landfill. Recycling breaks down the composite to recover material or energy; repurposing uses blade sections directly in another structure. In the United States, landfill remains common because recycling and reuse options are less available and often more costly. Which route makes sense depends on the blade, the destination for recovered material, and whether a suitable processor or project is nearby.
Why are wind turbine blades difficult to recycle?
Most blades are made from fiber-reinforced composites: glass or carbon fibers bonded into a polymer matrix. This combination is strong and durable in service, but the fibers and resin are difficult to separate at end of life compared with materials such as steel and copper.

The distinction matters when interpreting recycling figures. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that about 85%–90% of a wind turbine’s total mass consists of materials that can already be commercially recycled. That figure applies to the whole turbine, not to blades: composite materials in blades and some covers make up the more difficult fraction. (DOE wind recycling overview; DOE End-of-Service Guide)

What happens to blades when a wind farm is decommissioned?
In the United States, most retired blades are currently landfilled, according to DOE. Recycling and repurposing alternatives have more limited availability and higher costs. DOE also says it is difficult to determine how many blades are recycled or repurposed each year relative to the number landfilled.

Capacity is not the same as actual recycling: DOE’s guide reports that U.S. blade recyclers had the capacity to recycle more than 3,000 blades per year as of 2022, but that figure does not establish how many blades they actually processed. For scale, DOE estimated that less than 50,000 tons of blade waste were managed by landfills in 2018. That amount represented 0.017% of combined municipal solid waste and construction and demolition waste; it is not an estimate of all blade waste generated. (DOE End-of-Service Guide)
How are turbine blades recycled?
Recycling routes process the blade composite to recover usable material or energy for another manufacturing process. The routes differ in what they recover and how much processing they require.

Mechanical processing: cutting, grinding, and shredding
Blades can be cut into transportable pieces and then ground or shredded. The resulting composite fragments may substitute for some material in concrete or other manufacturing. Mechanical processing can also prepare blade waste for use as fuel in cement kilns. These are ways to divert material from landfill, but they generally do not restore the original composite as blade-grade fiber.
Cement-kiln co-processing
In cement production, the resin in blade composite can contribute energy, while the mineral and glass fraction can be incorporated into cement. NREL described this route as suitable for glass-reinforced composite blades and noted its use in Germany in a 2021 account. Whether it is a practical option for a particular project depends in part on access to a suitable kiln and the logistics of getting blades there. (NREL circular-economy summary)

Thermal recovery and pyrolysis
Thermal processes heat composite material so that the polymer matrix decomposes, potentially leaving fibers and other constituents to recover. DOE describes work with the University of Tennessee and Carbon Rivers to reclaim fiberglass from retired blades for new blade construction and for second-generation composites in automotive, consumer, marine, and aerospace applications. Those are research goals and intended uses; they should not be taken as evidence of current commercial capacity or output. (DOE recycling program; DOE reuse and recycling strategy)
Chemical recycling and solvolysis
In chemical recycling, solvents break down the polymer matrix so fibers and other constituents can be recovered. Solvolysis is one such approach. Its results depend on process energy, the quality and destination of recovered material, and the transport and system boundaries included in an assessment; one comparative study therefore does not establish that it is the best choice in every location or facility.

How can blades be repurposed without breaking them down?
Repurposing gives blade sections a second use as components in a new structure, rather than processing the composite to recover its constituents. DOE’s guide describes uses including pedestrian bridges, playgrounds, benches, bike shelters, affordable housing, and noise barriers. Each application needs an appropriate design and structural assessment, as well as cutting, transport, and a project suited to the blade section. Examples demonstrate possibilities, not a universal solution for every retired blade. (DOE End-of-Service Guide)

A European Commission summary reports a lifecycle comparison of three 71-meter glass-fiber-reinforced polymer blades. The study’s results are model outputs for that scenario, not predictions for every blade design, commercial facility, or location. Its circularity indicator is a study metric; it should not be read as the percentage of a blade recycled.

| Route assessed | Circularity indicator | Material recovery or quality reported | Lifecycle emissions in the three-blade scenario |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solvolysis | 0.77 | 90%–100% material recovery at 50%–60% quality | 225–503 tonnes CO₂-equivalent |
| Repurposing, grinding, and cement co-processing | 0.52–0.55 | Not stated in the European Commission’s study summary | 499–615 tonnes CO₂-equivalent |
| Pyrolysis | 0.42 | About one-third of the resulting material was low quality and subsequently incinerated in the modeled case | 566–744 tonnes CO₂-equivalent |
The European Commission says solvolysis was up to 83% more resource-efficient than the alternatives assessed in that study, while also noting that it was energy intensive. The results illustrate why recovery quantity alone is not enough to judge a route: recovered quality and final use, energy demand, emissions, transport, cutting, costs, and local access all matter. The study summary does not establish comparable current local prices. (European Commission study summary)
What could make future blades easier to recycle?
Some research is changing blade materials and design so they can be separated and recovered more readily. NREL’s PECAN project developed a biomass-derivable resin intended to make future blades chemically recyclable. In 2024, NREL reported a 9-meter prototype blade that a mild chemical process completely broke down in six hours. That was a demonstration using a purpose-designed resin, not a finding that conventional installed blades can all be recycled in six hours. (NREL 2024 release)
DOE launched its Wind Turbine Materials Recycling Prize in 2023 with $5.1 million in funding to advance recycling of fiber-reinforced composites and rare-earth materials. In October 2024, DOE announced six final winners, each receiving $500,000 and $100,000 in national-laboratory vouchers. The awards support development; they do not show that every winning process is commercially deployed. (DOE recycling program)
How should a project choose an end-of-life route?
There is no single route that fits every blade. A project owner or decommissioning team can compare options by asking:
- Is there a local processor, cement kiln, or reuse project that can accept the blade material?
- What does the route actually recover, at what quality, and where will that material go?
- How much cutting, transport, and additional processing are required?
- What energy use, emissions, and costs are associated with the full route?
- For a reuse project, has the blade section been assessed and designed for its intended structural role?
These checks help distinguish a technically possible pathway from one that is practical for a specific project. The available evidence establishes several routes, but not a universally available or least-cost option.
