The clearest difference in Washington’s 2024 season is role and workload: Jayden Daniels was the full-season starter and a major rushing contributor, while Marcus Mariota appeared in three games and did not start for Washington. Their official stats show what each produced, but the unequal opportunities make this a comparison of their 2024 contributions—not a controlled measure of ability or a complete technical scouting report.
How their 2024 passing production compares
Washington’s 2024 regular-season stats show Daniels completing 331 of 480 passes for 3,568 yards, 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Mariota completed 34 of 44 passes for 364 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. These figures are from the Commanders’ 2024 regular-season team statistics.

| 2024 regular season | Jayden Daniels | Marcus Mariota |
|---|---|---|
| Completions/attempts | 331/480 | 34/44 |
| Completion percentage | 69% | 77.3% |
| Passing yards | 3,568 | 364 |
| Passing touchdowns | 25 | 4 |
| Interceptions | 9 | 0 |
The completion percentages are not a fair standalone accuracy ranking. Daniels attempted 480 passes; Mariota attempted 44, so Mariota’s percentage comes from a much smaller sample. Washington’s 2024 quarterback review says Mariota appeared in three games and did not start a game for the team. Daniels’ 3,568 passing yards also set Washington’s rookie single-season passing-yard record, according to that review.

Daniels ran 148 times for 891 yards and six touchdowns in the 2024 regular season. Mariota ran 18 times for 92 yards and one touchdown. Daniels averaged 6.0 yards per carry, compared with Mariota’s 5.1, but Mariota’s average is based on only 18 attempts.

| 2024 regular season | Jayden Daniels | Marcus Mariota |
|---|---|---|
| Rushing attempts | 148 | 18 |
| Rushing yards | 891 | 92 |
| Yards per carry | 6.0 | 5.1 |
| Rushing touchdowns | 6 | 1 |
The volume gap is more revealing than the averages: Daniels’ 148 carries show a much larger rushing contribution over the season. The figures alone do not establish how often either quarterback ran by design, scrambled, or gained yards in particular situations.
What the numbers say—and what they cannot
As a same-team, same-season reference point, 2024 makes the contrast clear: Daniels handled a full-season starting workload, produced far more passing volume, and contributed substantially more as a runner. Mariota’s numbers describe a limited reserve role across three appearances.

Box scores cannot establish detailed mechanics or tendencies. These totals do not show pocket habits, progression speed, preferred throw depth, or whether a particular run was designed or improvised. A film-based comparison would be needed to support those conclusions; the official statistics establish production and opportunity, not the technical reasons behind them.
Why use 2024 as the comparison
It is a completed season in which both quarterbacks were on Washington’s roster, and the team’s review supplies role context for Mariota’s three appearances and lack of starts. NFL.com’s Jayden Daniels career stats and Marcus Mariota career stats, accessed October 4, 2026, list both with Washington and include 2025 and 2026 season rows. Those newer rows are time-sensitive, and 2026 is in progress as of that access date, so they are not a like-for-like completed-season basis for this comparison.
