Cryptocurrency can produce gains through price appreciation, trading, staking rewards, or mining rewards, but none is a dependable source of income. Each route has different costs, risks, and custody demands, and the available evidence does not establish a typical return or a reliably profitable strategy. The practical choice is not simply which route promises the most: it is which risks and responsibilities you understand and can afford to take.
How can I make money with cryptocurrency?
There are four broad routes: buy and hold an asset in the hope its price rises, trade price movements, participate in staking, or mine certain cryptocurrencies. A gain is never assured. A token’s price can fall, a transaction can lose money after fees, and rewards may not compensate for the risks or costs involved.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) issued a joint interpretation on March 17, 2026, addressing token categories and how federal securities laws apply to certain transactions, including airdrops, protocol mining, protocol staking, and wrapping. The SEC lists March 23, 2026, as its effective date. That discussion concerns certain activities; it does not establish that every staking product, pooled service, or mining arrangement is outside securities laws. Treatment depends on the activity and its facts. Read the SEC and CFTC interpretation.

| Route | How a return might arise | How losses can occur | Control, costs, and complexity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holding and selling | An asset is sold for more than its purchase cost, before applicable fees and taxes. | The asset’s price falls, or selling and transfer costs reduce the proceeds. | You may hold the private keys yourself or depend on a platform. Costs can include fees, spreads, and transfers; you also need to keep transaction records. |
| Trading | A trader attempts to benefit from price movements by buying and selling. | Prices move against the trade; mistakes, fees, or leverage can magnify losses. | Requires ongoing decisions and attention to fees and platform conditions. A platform may control access to assets or trades. |
| Staking | Some protocol arrangements provide rewards for participation or making assets available to support network operations. | Asset prices can fall; protocol, service, access, and arrangement-specific risks may affect the outcome. | Mechanics and custody vary. A service or pooled arrangement can differ from direct protocol participation; understand its fees and terms. |
| Mining | Some protocols provide rewards for contributing computing resources to network operations. | Asset prices, network conditions, hardware and energy expenses, and operational problems can make costs exceed rewards. | May require equipment, energy, technical work, and recordkeeping. Profitability depends on current, location-specific inputs. |

- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Holding and selling
Buying an asset and later selling it at a higher price is the most direct route to a price-based gain. Until a sale, a price increase is a change in the value of a holding, not cash proceeds. A lower sale price, transaction costs, and applicable taxes can change the result.
Trading
Trading aims to take advantage of price movements, but a trade can lose money even if the broader market later rises. Frequent transactions can add fees, spreads, time demands, and recordkeeping. Trading with borrowed funds or margin adds leverage, which magnifies losses as well as gains.

Staking
Staking describes participation in certain blockchain protocols, but the term is also used for services and pooled products with different mechanics. Before participating, find out what activity is actually performed, who controls the assets or keys, how rewards and fees work, and what conditions could restrict access. A regulatory discussion of protocol staking is not a blanket conclusion about every product marketed as staking.
Mining
Mining uses computing resources in some blockchain networks and may earn protocol rewards. Whether it can make money depends on inputs such as hardware cost, energy price, network difficulty, reward, and asset value, all of which can change. Without current figures for your location and setup, there is no sound basis for calling mining profitable.

Can you earn passive income from crypto?
Staking or a mining setup may generate rewards without the same kind of repeated buying and selling as active trading, but “passive” does not mean guaranteed, risk-free, or free of work. You may still need to assess a service or protocol, monitor access and fees, manage security, and keep records. Rewards denominated in a volatile asset can also lose value if that asset’s price falls.
The CFTC warns that virtual currencies can be more volatile than traditional fiat currencies, that leverage magnifies gains and losses in margined futures, and that spot trading may take place on platforms that are unregulated and unsupervised. Its customer advisory puts the central point plainly: “There is no such thing as a guaranteed investment or trading strategy.” Read the CFTC’s virtual-currency risk advisory.

Is crypto trading profitable?
It can result in a gain, but the available evidence does not establish a typical profit, a reliable strategy, or a return that can be expected by an individual trader. Volatility creates opportunities for price movements in both directions. Fees and spreads reduce results, while leverage can increase losses quickly. Spot-market access and oversight can also vary by platform.

Do I have to pay taxes on cryptocurrency earnings?
For U.S. readers: the IRS treats digital assets as property, says income from digital assets is taxable, and notes that transactions may have to be reported. The tax result depends on the transaction and the taxpayer’s circumstances; there is no single treatment or rate that applies to every sale, reward, or other activity. See the IRS digital-assets hub for current guidance on topics including sales, basis, staking, and broker reporting.
Keep records of transactions, including dates, amounts, and relevant fees, so you can work out what happened and consult the current IRS instructions or a tax professional about your situation. Tax and regulatory rules differ by jurisdiction; the IRS guidance is U.S.-specific.
How do I keep cryptocurrency safe?
Crypto custody is about who controls access to assets through private keys or passcodes. A wallet does not contain the crypto itself: it manages the keys used to access it. Losing control of credentials can mean losing access, while relying on a custodian means considering that provider’s terms, security, and ability to restrict access. The SEC’s December 12, 2025, custody bulletin explains these distinctions and flags phishing and fees. Read the SEC custody bulletin.

- If using self-custody: protect private keys and recovery credentials. A hardware wallet is one optional physical tool for self-custody, not a guarantee against lost credentials, user error, price declines, or protocol failures.
- In either case: verify that a platform or wallet is legitimate and be alert to phishing messages seeking credentials or transfers.
How can you spot crypto fraud?
Be skeptical of offers promising guaranteed returns, claims that a token must rise, and pitches that do not clearly explain what rights a token gives or what could affect its value. The CFTC says the token market is young and lacks a widely accepted standard for valuation; offerings can also be fraudulent or fail to deliver promised products. Read the CFTC’s digital-currency advisory.
Impersonation, suspicious trading-platform offers, and token pitches are among the fraud patterns described by the CFTC. A demand for an unexpected fee or supposed tax before allowing a withdrawal is a warning sign, not proof that paying will release funds. Verify a service through legitimate channels, and do not send more money to recover funds solely because someone demands it. Review the CFTC’s digital-asset fraud guidance.
