For a desktop with an available compatible PCIe slot, a PCIe Wi-Fi adapter is a strong starting point when performance and flexible antenna placement matter. A USB adapter is simpler to install and suits PCs without a free slot. Neither form factor guarantees a particular internet speed: your router, connection, PC, surroundings, and local rules all affect results.
For a Wi-Fi 7 upgrade, the TP-Link Archer TBE550E is a PCIe option; the TP-Link Archer TBE6500U is a USB option listed for Windows 10 and 11. Before choosing either, check that your router, operating system, available slot or port, and region support the features you want.

Which type of Wi-Fi adapter suits a desktop PC?
| Type | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PCIe card | A desktop with an open compatible slot, where performance and a separately positionable antenna base are priorities. | Confirm the slot, case access, operating-system support, and room to position the antennas. PCIe is generally described as offering better performance and value, but that is not a guarantee for every adapter or PC. Tom’s Hardware’s adapter guide provides general form-factor guidance. |
| USB adapter | A PC without a free slot, or a user who wants to avoid opening the case. | Check the required USB connection, supported operating systems, and antenna placement options. USB can simplify installation; actual results still depend on the adapter and network. |
| M.2 Wi-Fi module | A system whose motherboard or an appropriate adapter board supports the module. | Check the exact M.2 arrangement, antenna connections, and any required adapter board. A bare module is not automatically a ready-to-install PCIe card. |
What do Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, and Wi-Fi 7 change?
- Wi-Fi 6: Uses the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.
- Wi-Fi 6E: Extends Wi-Fi 6 into the 6 GHz band. Using that band requires a compatible router, supported software and drivers, and permission to use 6 GHz in your region.
- Wi-Fi 7: A newer generation whose features likewise depend on compatible equipment and software. A Wi-Fi 7 adapter connected to an older router cannot provide Wi-Fi 7 features.
Intel says its Wi-Fi 6E products need Windows 11 with current updates, a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router, and driver version 22.70.0 or later for 6 GHz access. For Intel Wi-Fi 7 functionality, Intel lists a Wi-Fi 7 router, Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, and driver version 23.10.0 or later. These are Intel’s requirements for its products, not universal requirements for every vendor. Intel’s 6 GHz and Wi-Fi 7 requirements also note that some countries prohibit 6 GHz use and that system manufacturers may disable it.
Wi-Fi adapters to consider for a desktop
TP-Link Archer TBE550E: PCIe Wi-Fi 7
This is a PCIe choice for a desktop with a compatible free slot. TP-Link says Wi-Fi 7 features require a compatible router and PC operating system. Its 320 MHz channel width operates on 6 GHz, which may be restricted by regional rules. Check the current product and driver information against your PC and router before buying. TP-Link Archer TBE6500U: USB Wi-Fi 7
This USB option avoids internal card installation and is listed by TP-Link for Windows 10 and Windows 11 desktop PCs and laptops. Its listed maximum signal rates are 2,882 Mbps on 6 GHz, 2,882 Mbps on 5 GHz, and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. These are manufacturer specifications derived from IEEE specifications, not measured internet throughput; features depend on a compatible access point and PC operating system. TP-Link warns that real throughput and coverage vary with network conditions, access-point limits, building materials, obstacles, traffic, and access-point location. TP-Link Archer TBE6500U specifications and notes.
ASUS PCE-BE92BT: PCIe Wi-Fi 7 with platform limits
ASUS lists a PCIe x1 slot requirement, external antennas, and Bluetooth 5.4. Its stated platform requirements include Windows 11, an Intel 13th-generation or later CPU, and an Intel motherboard, so it is not a universal choice for AMD-based PCs. ASUS describes speeds of up to 5.7 Gbps for its 6 GHz/320 MHz capability; treat that as a manufacturer maximum, conditional on suitable router, band, regional availability, and other factors—not an expected internet speed. Intel AX210: a Wi-Fi 6E module, not a complete card
The AX210 supports dual-stream Wi-Fi on 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz and is specified for Windows 10, Windows 11, and Linux. It is a module rather than a ready-to-install desktop PCIe card. Confirm that your PC has a compatible M.2 arrangement or use an appropriate adapter board with antennas, and check Intel’s operating-system and driver requirements if you need 6 GHz. Intel AX210 specifications.
How to check desktop, router, and operating-system compatibility
- Inspect the PC. For a PCIe adapter, verify that a compatible slot is free and accessible inside the case. For USB, confirm that the PC has a suitable port. If considering a module, verify the exact M.2 support and antenna arrangement.
- Match the adapter to the router. A newer adapter can connect to older routers, but it will not add Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 features that the router lacks. For 6 GHz, Intel specifies a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router for its products; Intel Wi-Fi 7 functionality requires a Wi-Fi 7 router.
- Verify OS and drivers for the exact model. Check the manufacturer’s current support page before purchase. Requirements differ by product: for example, Intel publishes specific Windows and driver prerequisites for 6 GHz use, while the TP-Link USB model is listed for Windows 10 and 11.
- Check local 6 GHz availability. Rules differ by country, and a computer manufacturer may disable the band. Do not assume a 6 GHz-capable adapter can use that band wherever you live.
- Consider antenna position. A card with a separate antenna base can make it easier to move antennas away from the back of a metal case. For a USB adapter, check how its antenna or extension arrangement can be positioned in your workspace.
Why advertised Wi-Fi rates are not internet-speed promises
A product’s maximum link rate is a theoretical wireless specification, not a guarantee of internet throughput. The connection between your PC and router is only one part of the path; the router or access point, ISP service, other network traffic, distance, obstacles, building materials, and device capabilities can all affect what you experience. TP-Link explicitly says the TBE6500U’s throughput and coverage are not guaranteed and vary with network and environmental conditions.

Choosing between the options
- Choose a PCIe card if your desktop has a compatible free slot and you want an internal adapter with flexible antenna placement.
- Choose USB if you want to avoid opening the case or have no usable PCIe slot; confirm the model’s OS and port requirements.
- Choose Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 only when your router, PC software, drivers, and local regulations support the band or features you intend to use.
- For the AX210, treat the purchase as a module-and-host compatibility decision, not as a simple plug-in PCIe-card choice.
