CarPlay lets you adjust its appearance or choose a wallpaper from the car’s built-in display. The right change can make the interface feel more comfortable to use, but the best choice depends on your vehicle, lighting and preference—not on a guaranteed improvement in screen quality.
How to change Apple CarPlay’s appearance

Park the car before changing settings. Open CarPlay on the vehicle’s built-in display using its touchscreen, knobs, buttons or touchpad.

Open Settings in the CarPlay interface, then select Appearance. Choose from the options shown on your vehicle’s system; available labels and behavior can vary by software version and vehicle.

If you meant to change the background rather than the interface’s light or dark appearance, return to CarPlay Settings and open Wallpaper. Select an available design and apply it.

Apple documents both Appearance and Wallpaper as CarPlay settings. The setting described in the headline is not identified, so these are the two relevant places to check rather than a claim that one particular option was changed.
What the appearance setting changes—and what it does not
Appearance affects how CarPlay’s interface is presented. Apple says dark appearance is the default in most vehicles and is optimized for low-light environments. That is Apple’s stated rationale, not proof that dark mode will look better on every display or in every driving condition.

Changing appearance does not establish a change in screen resolution, brightness, contrast or hardware quality. If you are trying to alter only the map’s look, note that Apple’s vehicle-system documentation describes map appearance as having a separate control from the broader CarPlay appearance.

Think about when you drive. Dark appearance is designed with low-light viewing in mind. Consider your own comfort in the conditions in which you use the car.

Check how your vehicle handles dimming. CarPlay can respond to vehicle state, user settings and time of day. A vehicle may signal night mode, prompting CarPlay to switch to dark appearance.

Separate CarPlay from the map. If the map alone is not appearing as you expect, look for a map-specific appearance control rather than assuming the overall CarPlay setting governs it.

Controls differ among vehicles. For example, a Pioneer receiver manual describes an appearance option that applies to both CarPlay and Android Auto, with dimming tied to headlights, manual selection or a configured time. Those details apply to that receiver, not to every CarPlay system.

CarPlay runs on the vehicle’s built-in display and uses the car’s controls, which may be a touchscreen, knobs, buttons or a touchpad. The available options and labels can therefore vary with the vehicle system and software version. Apple’s support guide also contains confusing directions about automatic appearance switching, so do not assume that selecting Always Dark enables automatic switching. Check the options actually shown on your display and consult your vehicle’s instructions if needed.
Appearance and wallpaper are only two of the settings available in CarPlay. Apple also documents choices such as Dashboard suggestions, album art and Driving Focus; they are separate adjustments, not prerequisites for changing how the display looks.
