Immich can help you search a self-hosted photo library by describing what is in it and group faces into people. But it did not deliver the feature that mattered most to Nimrod Aldea: automatically assembled “Memories” or highlight reels that bring older photos and videos back to life. That gap—not basic search—was the one thing his home-built Google Photos alternative could not do.
What was missing from the home photo library?
In an article published by Yahoo Tech and credited to Android Police writer Nimrod Aldea on August 29, 2026, Aldea described using Immich with a 270 GB library of photos and videos. He found that it handled two functions he associated with Google Photos—descriptive search and face grouping—but lacked automatically assembled highlight reels. Read Aldea’s account.

Google Photos’ “Memories” experience is about resurfacing and stitching together older photos and videos, not simply finding a file after you ask for it. Immich’s search and face tools address different needs: they help you locate and organize items, but are not the same as a system choosing a set of moments and presenting them as a reel.

His experience does not establish how well Immich will recognize subjects in another person’s library or whether every household will miss automatic highlights equally.

Can Immich search photos by describing them?
Yes. Immich documents contextual search using CLIP, which lets users enter freeform descriptions without requiring those words to appear in the photo’s metadata. Its search tools also include faces, OCR text, locations, camera information, time frames, tags, and other filters. Immich’s search documentation explains the available options.
Aldea gave queries such as “you eating pizza,” “the entire family,” and “plant” as examples of searches he tried. Those are examples from his account, not benchmark results or a guarantee that every similar query will return the right images. The practical distinction is that contextual search helps you retrieve items when you have an idea what to look for; it does not automatically create a narrative reel for you.
How does Immich group faces—and what about videos?
Immich detects faces and groups them into people that users can name and search. Face processing relies on machine-learning models and clustering, so the groups are automated results rather than human-verified identity labels. See Immich’s facial-recognition documentation for how the feature is described.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Video face recognition has a specific limitation: according to the Immich FAQ, face recognition runs on generated thumbnails. A person must appear in a video thumbnail to be detected under that documented behavior; this should not be understood as a scan of every frame in each video.
What does it take to run Immich at home?
Self-hosting trades a hosted service’s operational burden for responsibility over your own server, storage, and recovery plan. Immich’s requirements guidance recommends at least 6 GB of RAM for smooth use and local SSD storage for PostgreSQL database files. It estimates that generated thumbnails and transcoded video add 10–20% to a photo library’s size on average. That is project guidance and an average, not a guarantee for every setup or collection.
Those requirements are separate from the feature question: adding memory, faster storage, or more disk capacity does not create an automatic Memories reel. Before moving a large collection, account for both the original media and the additional space Immich may use for generated data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you move Google Photos into Immich?
Immich’s quick start describes importing Google Photos content with Google Takeout and immich-go, and setting up mobile backup. The exact import workflow and current instructions are in the Immich quick start.
Importing a collection is not the same as having a recovery plan. Immich warns that its built-in database backup includes metadata and user information, but does not include the image and video files stored in the upload location. You must separately back up those originals and know how you would restore them if the server or storage failed.
Is Nextcloud Memories another option?
Nextcloud offers an app called Memories, which may be worth considering if you already run Nextcloud. Its configuration guide recommends Preview Generator for performance, Nextcloud Photos for albums, and Recognize for AI tagging; it also documents migrating metadata from Google Takeout. Those documented integrations do not establish that it provides Google Photos-equivalent automatically assembled highlight reels, so check the specific behavior you need before choosing it.
What did the Immich roadmap say about highlight reels?
Aldea’s article reported a November 2025 comment from Immich maintainer bo0tzz about a feature request: “The age of the feature request isn’t particularly meaningful. Fancy memories would be nice, but we currently have no plans to add it.” The quotation is attributed here as reported in that article; it is a time-bound statement, not a guarantee about the project’s roadmap today.
The decision is therefore about your preferred workflow. If searching and browsing a library you control matter more than automatic throwback reels, Immich may fit what you want. If you rely on a service to choose and present old moments without prompting, treat that missing feature as a meaningful trade-off rather than assuming search is a substitute.
