For a more useful and enjoyable Android Auto setup, try a mix of navigation, music, audiobooks, radio, hands-free messaging and a game for when you are parked. This seven-app shortlist covers those jobs; it is not a universal ranking, and which apps appear can vary by region, phone and vehicle.
Which apps are worth adding to Android Auto?
Android Auto projects a driver-optimized experience from your Android phone to a compatible car display or aftermarket stereo. Google’s current developer overview says it works with phones running Android 9 or later, but your car or head unit must also support Android Auto. [Google’s Android Auto developer overview]

Navigation apps: Google Maps and Waze
Google Maps for everyday directions
Google names Maps as an Android Auto app for GPS navigation and traffic alerts. It is a straightforward choice if you want directions on the car display, but this is not a claim that it is more accurate than other navigation apps. [Google’s Android Auto app listing]

Waze when you want audio controls alongside navigation
Waze offers another navigation option. Its audio-player integration can show playback controls on the map, and Waze lists Spotify, Audible and TuneIn among supported players. That can be convenient if you want to manage listening without switching away from the map. Availability of individual audio apps may vary by country. [Waze Help: listen to music and podcasts]
Listening apps: Spotify, Audible and TuneIn
Spotify for music and playlists
Google lists Spotify as an Android Auto media app and gives this voice-command example: “Play my playlist on Spotify.” Sign in to Spotify on your phone before driving. Some apps or features require a subscription or premium account. [Google’s Android Auto app listing] [Google’s guide to listening to media]
Audible for audiobooks
Audible is listed by Google among Android Auto media apps and by Waze as a supported audio player. It is a natural fit for longer drives when you want to listen rather than browse a screen. Access to particular content or features may depend on the app and your account. [Google’s Android Auto app listing] [Waze Help: listen to music and podcasts]
Rank #2
- Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
- Requires Android 11+
- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
- Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
TuneIn for radio and audio discovery
Google includes TuneIn in its Android Auto media examples, and Waze lists TuneIn and TuneIn Pro as supported audio players. The available stations and features can differ by country, so check the app on your own setup rather than assuming a particular station is available. [Google’s Android Auto app listing] [Waze Help: listen to music and podcasts]
Messaging: use WhatsApp hands-free
Google names WhatsApp as an Android Auto messaging example. Keep messaging voice-led and focused on the road: do not browse chats, read messages on the display, or compose a reply while driving. [Google’s Android Auto app listing]
Parked entertainment: Bubblewoods
Bubblewoods is an example of a game for Android Auto. Google’s product page says games can be played on the car display while parked; the platform automatically exits a parked app when it detects vehicle motion. Treat a game as an option for a charging stop or pickup wait, never as something to play while the vehicle is moving. [Google’s Android Auto page] [Google’s guide to parked apps]

Google announced general availability of the Games category in September 2026. That rollout milestone does not mean every game, phone or vehicle will be compatible. Google’s parked-app guide lists Games for Android Auto and Android Automotive OS; it lists video and browsers only for Android Automotive OS, so it should not be read as support for dashboard video streaming in Android Auto. Why your app list may look different
Android Auto supports categories including media, messaging, navigation, points of interest, Internet of Things, weather and games, subject to Google’s car quality requirements. Whether a particular app shows up also depends on regional availability, Android version, account, phone, vehicle or aftermarket head unit, and the app’s own support. Google says more than 500 vehicle models support Android Auto, but that figure is about vehicle compatibility—not app popularity or a guarantee for every car. Check the vehicle compatibility information and your personalized compatible-app collection before troubleshooting an absent app. [Google’s Android Auto developer overview] [Google’s Android Auto page] [Google’s compatible-app collection]
Connecting and checking your setup
Android Auto can connect wirelessly over Bluetooth or through a USB cable, depending on the phone and car. A cable is only relevant if your setup uses a wired connection; it is not required for Android Auto generally. [Google’s Android Auto page]
Quick Recap
- Confirm that the phone runs Android 9 or later and the vehicle or head unit supports Android Auto.
- Sign in to the media app on your phone; some features may require a subscription or premium account.
- If an app is missing, check Google’s personalized compatible-app collection and the app’s availability in your country.
- For a wired setup, use a USB connection; for a wireless setup, follow the vehicle and phone pairing instructions.
