Start with the picture mode, then test motion smoothing and automatic brightness controls. Treat each change as a reversible comparison: what looks best depends on your TV, the content, the room and your preferences.
Start with picture mode
Picture modes are presets that can change several parts of the image at once, sometimes including motion processing. RTINGS notes that this makes picture mode one of the most influential settings to check. For films and TV shows, try Movie, Cinema, Custom or Filmmaker Mode if your set offers them; names and results vary by model.

Compare the new mode with your current one using the same scene. Pick a scene with familiar faces, shadow detail and a range of colors, and give your eyes a moment to adjust after switching. A more natural-looking mode may initially seem less vivid than a bright or dynamic preset. That difference is not, by itself, proof that the new mode is wrong or right for you.
Test motion smoothing instead of assuming you need it
Motion smoothing, also called motion interpolation, creates additional frames to make movement look smoother. Some people like that effect, while others find it makes films look unnaturally video-like. Try turning it off while watching a film, then switch it back on to compare.

Filmmaker Mode is designed to disable certain processing and preserve the presentation intent. Its FAQ says: “Filmmaker Mode disables certain post-processing features such as motion smoothing, sharpening, noise reduction, and others, and puts the TV in a mode where the content is displayed as the director intended it, without inadvertent changes that may result from the TV’s advanced technical capabilities.” That does not mean every viewer should use it for everything: you may prefer smoother motion for sports or other fast-moving content.
Look for motion controls under labels such as Picture Clarity or TruMotion. The setting may be inside an advanced picture menu, and the exact label and behavior depend on the TV.

Stop unwanted brightness changes
If the picture dims or brightens unexpectedly, check for automatic controls that respond to room light or reduce energy use. Depending on the model, these may be called Ambient Light Sensor, AI Brightness, Energy Saving or Eco mode. LG documents automatic controls as a possible reason screen brightness changes; Samsung describes Eco mode as focused on energy saving.
Temporarily switch off the relevant control and compare the same content under the same room lighting. If the brightness becomes more consistent and you prefer it that way, leave it off. If you value automatic adaptation or energy savings more, turn it back on. These controls do not necessarily make every TV picture worse.

Set light output for your room
Screen brightness or backlight controls affect how much light the TV puts out. A higher setting is not automatically more accurate or more comfortable: the suitable level depends on the room and viewing conditions. Adjust it while watching in the lighting you normally use, rather than copying a numerical setting from another television.
Keep the distinction between light output and the image’s brightness in mind. If the picture itself looks too dark or washed out, changing the backlight may not address the underlying cause; picture mode and other image controls can also affect what you see.

Make reversible changes and compare like with like
- Record your starting point. Photograph the current picture settings or write them down so you can restore them.
- Change one setting at a time. Select a Movie, Cinema, Custom or Filmmaker preset if available, then compare it with the original on the same scene.
- Test motion processing. Turn motion smoothing off for a film scene; compare, and restore it for sports or other content if you prefer.
- Investigate dimming. If brightness shifts, test the ambient-light or energy-saving control while keeping room lighting and content the same.
- Adjust light output. Set screen brightness or backlight to a comfortable level for your usual room, then reassess the picture.
Some TVs store settings separately for SDR and HDR, built-in apps and HDMI inputs. Repeat the comparison for the content and input you actually use, and check the owner’s manual for how your model handles separate settings. If a change makes the picture worse, restore the previous value before trying another.
When basic adjustments are enough—and when calibration is different
These are practical starting points, not a guarantee of a calibrated picture. RTINGS explains that true calibration measures the exact colors a TV produces with specialized equipment; many basic adjustments can be made at home without it. RTINGS also provides downloadable AVS HD 709 test patterns if you want to make adjustments using test images. No meter or calibration service is required to try the settings above.

For exact menu names and model-specific behavior, consult your TV’s manual or support page. If you want measured color accuracy beyond basic adjustments, calibration is a separate, optional step.
What to expect from an older TV
Changing picture controls can make a set feel clearer, steadier or more natural when a preset or automatic feature is not suited to your viewing. It cannot repair a hardware fault or guarantee a dramatic improvement. The useful result is the picture you prefer for the content and room in which you watch.
