To download a photo from Outlook, first check whether it is a file attachment, an image inside the message, or a picture loaded from the internet. For an attachment, choose Download in new Outlook or Outlook on the web, or Save As in classic Outlook. For an image in the message body, use Save as Picture if available. A blocked internet image must be allowed to display before you can see it; that does not save an attachment file.
Identify how the photo appears
- Attachment: A separate file shown with the message, often near the subject or message header. Use the attachment menu to save it.
- Image in the message body: The picture appears among the message text and may not have a separate attachment entry. Try the image context menu and choose Save as Picture.
- Image loaded from the internet: The message may show a blank area or a banner where the picture should be. Outlook may block this remote content; allowing it to display is different from downloading an attached photo.
These distinctions matter: an attachment can be saved as a file, an inline picture may offer a picture-saving command, and a remote image is content Outlook retrieves from a website. Microsoft’s attachment and image guidance covers these separate workflows: attachment saving and saving pictures or attachments.

Save an attachment in new Outlook for Windows
- Open the email that contains the photo.
- Find the attachment below the message header or subject.
- Open the attachment’s dropdown and select Download. Choose Save to OneDrive instead if you want that destination.
- If prompted, choose a folder and select Save. Outlook may offer the last folder you used by default.
To save several attachments from the same message, choose Download all. Microsoft also documents dragging an attachment to the desktop. If these controls are not present, you may be using classic Outlook; use its steps below. See Microsoft’s attachment instructions.
Save an attachment in Outlook on the web or Outlook.com
- Open the message containing the photo.
- Select More actions beside the attachment.
- Choose Download for one file, Download all for the message’s attachments, or Save to OneDrive.
- Choose a destination folder if prompted and save the file.
You can also drag the attachment to the desktop. The exact menu can vary as Outlook features are released; Microsoft’s attachment help describes the web and new Outlook options.

Save an attachment in classic Outlook for Windows
- Select the attachment in the reading pane or open the message.
- On the Attachments tab, choose Save As, then select a folder and save.
- Alternatively, right-click the attachment and choose Save As.
Classic Outlook also supports saving attachments individually or as a group. Microsoft’s basic attachment tasks explain the attachment commands.
Save a picture embedded in the message
On desktop, right-click the picture and choose Save as Picture, then enter a filename and save it. The command may not be available for every image or Outlook view. When a message contains several inline pictures, Microsoft’s accessibility guidance notes that they may be announced simply as “Image”; if you cannot identify or save the original you need, ask the sender to send it as a separate attachment.

For Android, Microsoft’s accessibility guide describes selecting an embedded image, after which Outlook downloads it and offers the device’s gallery app. Labels and behavior can differ by app version. See the picture and attachment accessibility guidance.
Save an attachment on an Android phone
- Open the email and select its attachment.
- Choose Save to device.
- Grant file access if the app asks.
- Look for the file in Downloads in the Files app.
This is the Android workflow documented in Microsoft’s accessibility guide; it does not establish that every standard app screen uses identical labels. For iPhone and other app versions, follow the save options shown for that attachment and check the destination the app reports. Microsoft’s guide to saving Outlook pictures and attachments documents the Android steps.

Make a blocked image appear
Classic Outlook for Windows
If a message from a sender you trust shows a banner or blank space instead of an internet image, select Download Pictures in the information bar at the top of the message. Classic Outlook blocks internet pictures by default. Microsoft says this can limit exposure to potentially harmful content, reduce tracking pixels, and save bandwidth. A tracking pixel is not the same as a read receipt. Avoid loading external content from unknown or suspicious senders. See Microsoft’s classic Outlook picture-download guidance.
Outlook for iOS or Android
Outlook for iOS and Android downloads external images automatically unless you or your administrator has enabled Block external images. If images are blocked, tap the banner at the top of the email to display them. This displays remote content; it does not save a separate attachment file. Microsoft’s mobile external-image instructions describe the setting and banner.
When there is a link instead of a photo attachment
A sender may share a OneDrive link rather than attach a copy of the photo. Open the link and sign in with an account that has permission to access the file; organizational access settings can affect whether it opens. A link is not the same as an attached file, so the attachment’s Download menu may not apply. Microsoft’s attachment guidance distinguishes linked files from downloaded copies.
If the save option is missing or the file will not open
- Check the image type: A message-body picture or blocked internet image may not have an attachment menu. Use the relevant steps above.
- Check the Outlook version: New Outlook and Outlook on the web use attachment menus; classic Outlook uses Save As. Feature availability and labels can vary as Microsoft releases updates.
- Check the destination: Look in the folder you selected, the default folder offered by Outlook, or your device’s Downloads or Files location. If you chose OneDrive, check that destination instead.
- Check access to a shared link: Ask the sender to grant access or send the photo as an attachment if you need a local copy.
- Treat unexpected files cautiously: Microsoft blocks some potentially unsafe attachment types, including examples such as executable and script files. Do not bypass a warning for an unfamiliar file; verify a suspicious attachment with the sender through a trusted channel.
Microsoft notes that Outlook features may roll out gradually, and workflows can differ between new and classic Outlook. If a label here does not match your screen, check which Outlook version you have and use the controls available in that version.
