They do not establish a general way to make a wired doorbell smart without touching wiring. If you want a camera or video intercom, expect to replace the outdoor button with a smart doorbell.
First decide what “smart” needs to mean
A smart notification when someone presses the existing button is a different job from adding a camera, live view, or two-way video. The first may be possible while retaining the old button and chime; the second generally calls for a camera doorbell installed in place of the outdoor button.

Keep the button and chime: add a sensor or circuit module
Shelly Plus Uni
Shelly describes its Plus Uni as integrating into an analog doorbell’s electrical circuit, detecting the bell signal and sending information over WLAN to the Shelly system while retaining the analog chime. This is a product-specific circuit integration, not a wireless, no-contact conversion. Qolsys IQ Doorbell
Qolsys describes the IQ Doorbell (model QS1119-840) as connecting to the existing indoor chime, keeping the pre-wired bell and outdoor button, and enabling automations such as porch-light control or camera recording. It is a narrower option for a compatible Qolsys setup, not a universal add-on for any smart-home system. Wired smart video doorbells are generally designed to replace the existing wired button. Whether the indoor chime still rings is model-dependent: Google says wired Nest Doorbells use the home’s current chime; TP-Link’s UK guidance says the non-battery models in the class it describes use the packaged wireless chime rather than the existing chime; and Wyze says its Video Doorbell v2 works with the existing chime using an included chime controller. These details are not interchangeable across models or regions, so check the exact device’s current instructions.
- Google’s Nest Doorbell indoor power-adapter guidance says the adapter is sold separately, is not weatherproof, and must not be plugged into an outdoor outlet. Google notes that its battery Nest Doorbell can use its internal rechargeable batteries.
- TP-Link UK’s existing-chime guidance covers the stated Tapo/Kasa doorbell class; do not assume it describes every product or market.
- Wyze’s Video Doorbell v2 page describes use with an existing chime through an included chime controller.
Check compatibility before buying or installing
Smart doorbells can require continuous power, and that can affect whether an old chime works or needs a bypass, power kit, or separate chime. Verify the exact model’s requirements for your transformer, mechanical or electronic chime, and power arrangement rather than relying on the product category alone.

For a specific example of why model-level checks matter, Belkin’s Wemo mechanical-chime instructions specify a 16V/30VA or 24V/30VA transformer and a Wemo power kit. Its guidance also distinguishes retaining a mechanical chime from bypassing it. Those figures apply to that documented Wemo configuration, not to doorbells generally. The documented ways to keep the old wired button and chime do not meet a strict no-wiring-contact requirement: Shelly describes circuit integration, and Qolsys describes a connection at the indoor chime. The sources cited here do not establish a universal, no-contact retrofit that makes the entire original wired installation smart.

A battery-powered camera doorbell may avoid using the existing doorbell power wiring, but it changes the outdoor device rather than making the old button smart. If you are unwilling to contact wiring, choose only a setup whose manufacturer explicitly supports installation without doing so, and verify whether it can meet your camera, chime, and notification needs.

Use a safe installation path
- Read the exact model’s installation and compatibility instructions before buying, including transformer, chime, power-kit, and regional requirements.
- Follow the manufacturer’s safety directions. Belkin instructs installers to turn off power to the doorbell circuit before starting its Wemo installation.
- Do not assume a low-voltage doorbell circuit is safe to work on or that instructions for one model apply to another. Check local requirements and get qualified help if you cannot confidently identify the circuit or verify compatibility.
- Keep indoor power adapters indoors; Google specifically warns that its Nest adapter is not weatherproof and should not be plugged into an outdoor outlet.
