If a device feels slow, first find out whether the problem affects the whole device, one app, internet activity, startup, or battery life. Each points to a different fix: clearing storage will not repair a weak connection, and changing power settings will not solve a problem isolated to one app.
Work through the checks below in order, using the instructions for your device. Make one change at a time and see whether it helps before moving on.

What kind of slowdown are you experiencing?
- One app is slow: Update or restart that app, and check whether it is using unusually high system resources. If other apps work normally, begin with the affected app rather than changing system-wide settings.
- Websites or online features are slow: Check the connection separately from device performance. Network congestion or reconnecting to cell towers can make an iPhone or iPad seem slow; Google also separates connection troubleshooting from Android phone and app troubleshooting.
- The entire device is sluggish: Check storage, resource use, updates, background activity, and temperature.
- Startup takes a long time: Review apps that launch automatically, especially on Windows, without disabling services or security features indiscriminately.
- Battery life is the main problem: Battery-saving settings can extend runtime but may reduce responsiveness or background activity. Treat this as a power trade-off, not a guaranteed speed fix.
Start with safe checks that apply broadly
- Save your work and restart. A restart can clear a temporary problem. On Android, restart and check whether the issue changes before proceeding through other troubleshooting steps.
- Check for system and app updates. Install updates offered for your operating system and the apps that are slow. On Windows, review appropriate optional driver updates as well; avoid installing drivers from untrusted sources.
- Look for storage pressure. Remove files and apps you no longer need, or move files to another storage location. Do not assume that a cleanup tool will make every device faster.
- Close only apps you are not using or that are unresponsive. Do not shut down background processes indiscriminately; some provide notifications, syncing, or security functions you rely on.
- Check whether heat or power settings coincide with the slowdown. Let an overheated device return to a moderate temperature, and note whether a battery-saving mode is limiting performance.
Find and free storage without deleting more than you intend
Windows PC
Open Task Manager and review Processes and Performance to find apps or processes using substantial resources. Under Startup apps, review which apps start with Windows and disable only those you recognize and do not need at startup. Then free disk space by removing files or apps you no longer need. Low storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets current needs can all contribute to a slow Windows device, according to Microsoft Support.
Mac
Open System Settings > General > Storage and review the recommendations and categories taking up space. If the startup disk needs more room, move files to another disk or external storage. This makes room on the Mac’s internal drive; it does not directly upgrade the processor or memory. Open Activity Monitor to inspect memory use. If you suspect a disk problem, use Disk Utility to check it.

iPhone or iPad
Open Settings > General > [device] Storage to see usage and available recommendations. Offloading an app frees the app’s storage while keeping its documents and data; deleting an app removes its related data. Apple Support’s guidance, published September 30, 2026, recommends keeping at least 1 GB of free storage on an iPhone or iPad to avoid slowdowns. That is Apple’s device-specific recommendation, not a threshold for other platforms.
Do not force-close every app as routine maintenance. Apple says reopening apps that were closed unnecessarily can take longer because their data must load again. Close an app when it is unresponsive or causing a specific problem.
Android phone or tablet
Check storage in Settings; the exact menu varies by device and Android version. Google Android Help says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free. Treat that as Google guidance for Android, not a universal rule for every device or a guarantee that freeing space alone will fix the slowdown.

Chromebook
Open storage management to see space used by downloads, offline files, browsing data, Android apps, and user accounts. Remove items you do not need or move files to Google Drive. If the slowdown seems related to memory, close unused tabs, apps, or extensions and use the Diagnostics app to check CPU or memory.
Reduce background activity selectively
Windows
In Task Manager, use Startup apps to review apps that launch automatically. For supported Windows 11 apps, Microsoft recommends Power optimized as the background setting. Choosing Never stops an app from running in the background, but it also prevents that app from sending notifications and updates while it is closed. Keep background access for apps whose syncing or alerts matter to you.
If closing a heavy app does not help, restart the PC. Microsoft also recommends checking for malware as part of investigating poor performance; use Windows’ built-in security tools or another security product you already trust rather than disabling protection.

Android
Restart the device, install Android and app updates, and close apps you are not using. If the issue continues, use Safe Mode to check whether a downloaded app is involved. If the slowdown disappears in Safe Mode, remove recently installed apps one at a time, checking after each removal so you can identify the cause.
A factory reset is a last resort, not a routine speed-up step. Back up your data first: a reset deletes local apps and their data.
Chromebook
Install system updates, then use Diagnostics if CPU or memory appears to be the bottleneck. Closing unused tabs, apps, and extensions can help when too many are competing for memory; removing extensions you still need is not a necessary first step.

Choose performance or battery life deliberately
Power settings can change responsiveness, heat, runtime, and background activity. Use a performance-oriented mode only when its trade-offs suit the situation.

Check heat and battery condition on mobile devices
Apple says an iPhone or iPad can run more slowly when it is too hot or too cold. Move it to a more moderate environment and allow it to return to a normal temperature before judging performance. Avoid treating a temporary temperature-related slowdown as proof that the device needs replacement.

When to repair, replace, or stop troubleshooting
Consider service if the operating system reports a battery problem, a disk check identifies a problem, or a device remains unusually slow after the relevant app, storage, update, and background-activity checks. Before paying for a repair or replacing a device, weigh the service cost against the device’s remaining supported software life and whether its hardware can handle the work you need it to do.
Software maintenance has limits. Microsoft cautions that older PCs may not gain significant performance from troubleshooting; a hardware upgrade or replacement may be the better long-term option. The available guidance does not establish a universal repair-versus-replacement cost or a cross-device speed benchmark, so the decision depends on your device, diagnosis, and needs.
