For the compatibility snapshot updated September 18, 2026, Adobe lists Magento/Adobe Commerce 2.4.9 with PHP 8.5, Composer 2.10, OpenSearch 3, MariaDB 12.3 (recommended) or 11.8, RabbitMQ 4.3, ActiveMQ Artemis 2, Valkey 9, and nginx 1.30. These versions apply to that release row—not to every Magento 2 version. Check Adobe’s live matrix for your exact release and deployment before installing.
Choose the edition and installation route
Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce use different Composer project metapackages. For a store installation, use the Composer project workflow; contributors to Magento Open Source should use the Git-based contributor workflow instead.

| Use case | Route | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Install Magento Open Source for a store | magento/project-community-edition Composer metapackage |
Adobe documents this as the standard on-premises Composer project route. |
| Install Adobe Commerce | magento/project-enterprise-edition Composer metapackage |
Adobe Commerce codebases are distributed through Composer, and repository authentication keys are required. |
| Contribute to Magento Open Source | Git-based contributor installation | This workflow is intended for contributors; Adobe says a cloned contributor setup cannot be used for production. |
Adobe’s quick-start on-premises installation guide documents the Composer routes. For the contributor path, follow Adobe’s Contributor Install guide. If you are deciding between self-hosted and cloud deployment, account for the different operating responsibilities and check the compatibility information for the deployment type you plan to use.

Check the exact release’s supported stack
Adobe’s System Requirements page, updated September 18, 2026, identifies 2.4.9 as its latest listed Commerce release row. For that row, it lists the following dependencies:
#1 Best Overall
| Component | Version listed for 2.4.9 |
|---|---|
| PHP | 8.5 |
| Composer | 2.10 |
| Search | OpenSearch 3 |
| Database | MariaDB 12.3 (recommended) or 11.8 |
| Message broker | RabbitMQ 4.3 or ActiveMQ Artemis 2 |
| Cache | Valkey 9 |
| Web server | nginx 1.30 |
This is a dated compatibility snapshot, not a timeless stack recipe. Adobe supports only combinations included in its tables. The same page has separate rows for 2.4.8 and patch releases, as well as earlier releases; do not copy a PHP, database, search or service version from a different row. Before provisioning, match the exact application release and deployment type against Adobe’s System Requirements.
Prepare the server and access
Complete Adobe’s prerequisites before creating the project: provision a compatible server stack, install Composer, and arrange filesystem ownership. Adobe distinguishes the privileges needed to install and configure server software from the account that should run Commerce application commands. Do not install the application in the web-server document root as root; the web server may not be able to interact with files owned that way.

- It can be a gift option
- Run Commerce CLI commands and set up cron as the filesystem owner.
- Use repository authentication keys when installing Adobe Commerce. Adobe identifies the public key as the repository username and the private key as the password.
- Use the exact PHP, database, search, cache, broker and web-server versions supported for your chosen release.
See Adobe’s Adobe Commerce software and access prerequisites for repository access and filesystem-owner guidance. Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce are distinct distributions, so select the matching package and credentials rather than assuming one route applies to both.

For the ordinary self-hosted Magento Open Source installation, create the project with the community-edition metapackage. Pin the project to the exact release you have checked against Adobe’s matrix; the example below targets 2.4.9 and should be used only when that is the intended version and its listed requirements match your environment.

composer create-project --repository-url=https://repo.magento.com/ magento/project-community-edition=2.4.9 magento2
For Adobe Commerce, use its distinct project metapackage instead, with repository keys configured for Composer:
composer create-project --repository-url=https://repo.magento.com/ magento/project-enterprise-edition=2.4.9 magento2
These commands illustrate the respective metapackages and a release-specific pin. Confirm the precise package version available and supported for the target edition before running them; Adobe’s Composer installation guide is the authoritative procedure.

The official Install Adobe Commerce guide describes installer options and phased setup. Adobe says the installer can be run again with different options to correct mistakes or complete setup in phases. Its default behavior does not overwrite the database when installing into the same database instance. Do not use database cleanup options casually: back up data first, and consult the detailed installer guidance before changing database behavior.

Set HTTPS URLs and secure Admin access
If the deployment is configured for HTTPS, pass explicit secure settings for both the storefront and Admin. The secure base URL must begin with https://.
--use-secure=1
--base-url-secure=https://shop.example.com/
--use-secure-admin=1
Add these options to the installer command. They configure Commerce URLs and Admin access; they do not configure the web server, validate certificates or replace the rest of your security setup. Ensure HTTPS itself is correctly configured on the server.
Verify the installation and handle operations
After installation, check that the storefront loads at the intended base URL and that the Admin is reachable over the intended secure URL. Then complete the operational setup for the deployment, including cron and cache/indexer checks, using Adobe’s relevant official guides. Keep the filesystem-owner account consistent for CLI and scheduled tasks so that generated files remain accessible to the application and web server.
