Start with the pattern that matches your content, then use Bootstrap’s grid and spacing utilities to fit it to your page. For a new project, check the official Bootstrap 5.3 card documentation and confirm which Bootstrap version your project should use; the references here establish 5.3, not that it is the newest release as of October 2026.
What a Bootstrap card does
A card is a flexible content container that can combine a padded body, headings, text, links, images, list groups, headers, footers, and contextual styling. A card fills the width of its parent by default and has no margin of its own, so the surrounding layout determines its size and spacing.

Bootstrap’s card component documentation is version-specific. This guide uses the 5.3 documentation; Bootstrap 5.2 and 5.0 card pages are also available, but their presence does not establish which release is current overall. Check the official documentation for the version selected by your project.
Choose a pattern by content
| Pattern | Best for | Key classes | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text-only card | A short, self-contained explanation or summary | .card, .card-body, .card-title, .card-text |
Use a link or button only when there is a real action or destination. |
| Image-led card | Content where a relevant image helps identify or explain the subject | .card-img-top and the body classes |
Provide alternative text suited to the image’s purpose. |
| List-based card | A compact set of related items | .list-group and .list-group-flush |
Use a list only when the content is genuinely a set of items. |
| Responsive card collection | Several cards that should form a grid | .row, .row-cols-*, and grid columns |
Choose column counts around content and available space, not by habit. |
| Horizontal card | A card with image and text side by side at suitable screen widths | .row, .g-0, grid columns, and a breakpoint class |
Check how the image and text stack at narrower widths. |
Build a simple text card
Begin with the smallest structure that fits the content: a .card wrapper and a .card-body region. Add a heading and supporting copy, then add a link or button only if the reader can follow it to a destination or perform an action.
#1 Best Overall
<div class="card">
<div class="card-body">
<h2 class="card-title">Getting started</h2>
<p class="card-text">A concise description of the next step.</p>
<a href="/guide" class="card-link">Read the guide</a>
</div>
</div>
Replace the example destination with a real URL in your project. Do not make an informational card look interactive if it has no action.
Add an image when it carries information
Place an image above the body with .card-img-top when it helps readers recognize or understand the card’s subject. Supply appropriate alternative text: describe the image when it contributes information, or use empty alternative text when it is decorative and the surrounding content already conveys its purpose.

<div class="card">
<img src="/images/topic.jpg" class="card-img-top" alt="A relevant description of the image">
<div class="card-body">
<h2 class="card-title">Topic</h2>
<p class="card-text">Supporting information for this topic.</p>
</div>
</div>
Use a flush list group for genuinely list-shaped content
When the card’s main content is a set of related entries, a flush list group keeps that structure clear rather than disguising it as several paragraphs.

</ul>
</div>
Arrange multiple cards responsively
Cards do not create their own grid or spacing. Put them in Bootstrap grid columns, or use row column utilities to choose how many cards fit at different breakpoints. The row controls the collection; each card fills the width available inside its parent.
Rank #3
<div class="row row-cols-1 row-cols-md-2 row-cols-lg-3 g-4">
<div class="col">
<div class="card h-100">
<div class="card-body">
<h2 class="card-title">First item</h2>
<p class="card-text">A description sized for the available space.</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div class="col">
<div class="card h-100">
<div class="card-body">
<h2 class="card-title">Second item</h2>
<p class="card-text">Another description sized for the available space.</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
Here, .row-cols-1 creates a single-column arrangement at the smallest sizes, while the medium and large breakpoint classes request two and three columns. The g-4 utility adds gutters between grid items. Adjust breakpoints and column counts to suit the length of the content and the page width; no fixed card count is right for every viewport.
Make an image-and-text card horizontal
For a side-by-side layout, use a nested row with zero gutters and breakpoint-specific columns for the image and content. The breakpoint class lets the layout adapt rather than assuming the same narrow card shape works at every screen size.
<div class="card">
<div class="row g-0">
<div class="col-md-4">
<img src="/images/topic.jpg" class="img-fluid rounded-start" alt="A relevant description of the image">
</div>
<div class="col-md-8">
<div class="card-body">
<h2 class="card-title">Topic</h2>
<p class="card-text">Supporting information for this topic.</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
The Bootstrap 5.3 documentation demonstrates this layout with a row, .g-0, image and content columns, and a breakpoint-specific column class. Adapt the column proportions and image treatment to your content.
Set width, spacing, and visual emphasis deliberately
Since a card has no default margin and expands to its parent’s width, control its size through the containing grid, an explicit width, or custom CSS. Add spacing with Bootstrap spacing utilities on the card or its surrounding layout rather than expecting the component to supply it.
Best Value
Bootstrap also documents text alignment, background, border, and contextual color styling for cards. Use these choices to support the content, not to make color do all the work. If a color signals a status or category, state that meaning in visible text or provide another equivalent cue; color alone may not communicate it to assistive technology users.
Check third-party examples before reusing them
Official Bootstrap documentation provides the component patterns above. Third-party example pages may advertise free tutorials or code, but that does not establish the reuse terms for every template, asset, or snippet. Check the license and usage terms for any third-party material before incorporating it into a project.
