Majora’s Mask on Switch is the original Nintendo 64 game, not the 3DS remaster. Choose Switch if you want that original release and have Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack; choose Majora’s Mask 3D if you have compatible 3DS-family hardware and prefer its refreshed presentation and documented interface additions.
What version of Majora’s Mask is on Switch?
The Switch version is the Nintendo 64 release from 2000, offered through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Nintendo 64 collection. Nintendo announced its availability on 25 February 2022. It is not Majora’s Mask 3D, the separate Nintendo 3DS remaster. Nintendo’s Switch announcement identifies the game as the Nintendo 64 title.

To play it, you need a Nintendo Account and an active Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo says the service is not available in every country, and internet access is required for online features. Check the current Nintendo service page for your region for availability and terms.
What is different in Majora’s Mask 3D?
Majora’s Mask 3D is a distinct remaster for Nintendo 3DS-family systems, listed by Nintendo with a release date of 13 February 2015 in the UK. It retains the recognizable premise: Link faces a repeating three-day cycle in Termina, using the Ocarina of Time and residents’ routines to decide what to do before time is rewound. Nintendo describes the edition as a full remaster with refreshed visuals and added features. Nintendo’s 3DS product page documents the changes.

Visuals and camera controls
Nintendo says the visuals were overhauled. The game also supports motion controls for looking around. For camera control, Nintendo lists Circle Pad Pro support on the original Nintendo 3DS and the C Stick on New Nintendo 3DS.
Touch-screen tools and guidance
The touch screen makes item switching easier and displays schedule and map information. The upgraded Bombers’ Notebook tracks activities and includes alarms for events. Sheikah Stones provide hints for players who want guidance.

Fishing holes
The remaster adds fishing holes as an activity. Nintendo’s product page lists them among the edition’s features.

Can you still buy Majora’s Mask 3D?
Nintendo’s UK page says purchases in the Nintendo 3DS-family eShop ended on 27 March 2023 and lists a Nintendo 3DS game-card edition. That establishes a physical format, not current stock in every region. If you are looking for a copy, verify the seller’s region, condition and compatibility with your system.

Which version should you play?
Choose Switch if you want the original N64 release
Switch is the straightforward fit if you have a compatible console, already have Expansion Pack access or want the original Nintendo 64 edition. Remember that the game is accessed through the subscription catalog rather than as a standalone Switch game card.
Choose 3DS if you want the remaster’s interface additions
Pick Majora’s Mask 3D if you have 3DS-family hardware and value its refreshed visuals, touch-screen tools, Notebook alarms, hints or fishing holes. The 3D display effect is available only on 3D-capable 3DS models; Nintendo says the game can also be played on systems in the family including Nintendo 2DS.

If you do not own either platform
Compare the cost and availability of the required route in your country: an Expansion Pack membership for the Switch N64 game, or compatible 3DS-family hardware and a physical copy for the remaster. Nintendo’s cited pages establish these access routes, not current prices or which is better value.

There is no objectively superior edition established by Nintendo’s product information. The choice is between the original N64 game on Switch and a separate 3DS remaster with documented interface and presentation changes. Let the edition you want and the hardware or access you can get determine the pick.
