How to Improve Wi-Fi Coverage and Reliability Without Replacing Your Router

Start with a simple signal check and better router placement. If a weak area remains, choose a solution that fits your device, home layout, and existing router.

You can often improve Wi-Fi without buying a new router: first compare performance near the router with performance in the problem area, then try a more central, open placement and reduce avoidable obstacles. If only one room remains weak, a compatible range extender may help; for a stationary computer or TV, Ethernet can be more reliable. The right fix depends on whether the bottleneck is coverage, interference, your internet service, or a particular device.

Diagnose whether the problem is Wi-Fi, your internet service, or one device

Test the same device near the router and again where the connection is unreliable. If possible, compare more than one device. This simple check helps separate a weak signal in one area from a broader connection problem.

  • Better near the router, worse in one area: distance, walls, floors, or interference may be limiting coverage.
  • Poor on several devices, even near the router: check the internet service coming into the home and the router’s connection before focusing on coverage.
  • Poor on only one device: the device itself or its Wi-Fi capabilities may be the limiting factor.

Distance, physical barriers, nearby Wi-Fi traffic, and some household devices can all affect performance. The Federal Communications Commission also notes that 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi have different range and performance trade-offs; which band works better depends on distance and obstacles. Read the FCC consumer guidance on Wi-Fi and broadband speeds.

Move the router to a better position

The most useful no-cost change is often moving the router. The Federal Communications Commission advises placing it centrally to maximize coverage. Put it off the floor and in the open where practical, rather than inside a cabinet, behind furniture, or beside dense obstructions. Google Fiber likewise recommends central placement and minimizing barriers. See Google Fiber’s Wi-Fi placement guidance.

“Central” is relative to where you use Wi-Fi: a router at one end of a long home may serve that end well while leaving the other side weak. Modem location, the home’s layout and construction, and the rooms that need coverage all affect the best position. Treat placement as a practical test, not a fixed formula. Change one thing at a time, then retest from the problem area. Google’s mesh test guide explains how distance and obstacles affect network links.

Reduce obstacles and avoidable interference

When relocating the router, look for dense walls, floors, large furniture, and appliances between it and the devices that struggle. Nearby Wi-Fi networks and some household devices can also contribute to interference. If moving the router is not practical, try moving the affected device to a more open position or changing its location within the room.

Avoid placing a future extender or mesh point where several obstacles separate it from the router or upstream point. A relay can only pass along a connection it can receive. Google’s guidance covers both wireless interference and the effects of barriers on Wi-Fi performance. Read Google’s wireless-interference troubleshooting guidance.

Choose an option for a persistent weak area

If placement changes do not solve a specific coverage gap, choose based on what you need to connect and what the home allows. An extender and mesh equipment address wireless coverage; Ethernet serves a wired device; powerline adapters carry network connectivity over electrical wiring. None is guaranteed to work equally well in every home.

Option What it addresses Compatibility and placement Home-dependent factors
Wi-Fi range extender Rebroadcasts a router’s Wi-Fi signal into a weak area. Needs a usable signal from the router; place it between the router and the coverage gap, not in a dead zone. Verify compatibility with the exact router model. Walls, floors, distance, and interference affect the signal it receives and rebroadcasts.
Ethernet cable Provides a wired connection for a stationary device, bypassing Wi-Fi congestion for that device. Run a cable from the router to the computer, TV, or other device. It does not extend wireless coverage to other rooms. Whether a cable can be run conveniently is the main practical constraint.
Powerline adapters Carry network connectivity over the home’s electrical wiring; potentially useful where walls or floors impede Wi-Fi. Requires adapters and a suitable connection path through the home’s wiring; results are not assured. Performance depends on the home’s electrical wiring and layout.
Mesh equipment Uses multiple compatible units to provide coverage across an area. Do not assume it will work with an existing router. Check the exact product’s compatibility requirements. Placement and the quality of the link between mesh points affect results.

Use an extender only where it can still reach the router

A range extender can relay a router’s signal toward a weak room, but putting it in the dead zone defeats the purpose if it cannot receive a usable connection. Start between the router and the problem area, then test from the target room and adjust. The FCC identifies range extenders and mesh routers as ways to address coverage, while Google describes extenders as rebroadcasting the router’s signal. FCC consumer guidance and Google’s interference guidance explain these options.

Wire a stationary device when coverage is not the goal

For a desktop computer, television, or similar device that stays in one place, Ethernet can provide a more dependable link without relying on Wi-Fi in that room. It can also reduce that device’s demand on the wireless network, but it will not improve the signal for phones or other devices elsewhere. Google Fiber’s guidance discusses Ethernet as an alternative for connected devices.

Consider powerline for difficult walls or floors

Powerline adapters use electrical wiring to carry network connectivity between rooms. They may be worth considering when thick walls or floors make wireless reach difficult, but the result depends on the home’s wiring; general guidance cannot guarantee performance in a particular house. Google’s interference guidance discusses powerline adapters alongside other coverage options.

Check mesh compatibility before buying

Mesh products are not automatically generic repeaters for an existing router. For example, Google Wifi cannot be used as a generic extender or repeater for a current router; its mesh function is limited to compatible Google and Nest Wifi devices. Other products have their own requirements, so verify the exact model and setup documentation before purchase. Google explains what Google Wifi is and its compatibility limits.

Retest and follow the result

  1. Retest in the problem area after each placement change or equipment adjustment, using the same device where possible.
  2. If a mesh point has a weak connection, move it closer to its upstream point and test again. Google’s mesh test guidance describes checking link quality and adjusting placement. Open the mesh test guide.
  3. If performance is still poor near the router, check whether the internet service itself is impaired and whether the affected device is a limitation rather than assuming the issue is Wi-Fi coverage. Google’s Wi-Fi performance troubleshooting guide lists service, distance, barriers, devices, and interference among the factors to check.
