What Makes a Brand-Creator Partnership Authentic?

An authentic creator partnership fits the audience, gives the creator a truthful basis to speak, preserves their voice, and clearly discloses the relationship.

An authentic brand-creator partnership makes sense for the creator’s subject and audience, gives them a truthful reason to recommend the brand, preserves their recognizable voice, and clearly discloses the commercial relationship. A long-running deal can make a collaboration more familiar, but neither repetition nor a disclosure badge can substitute for a genuine fit and honest claims.

What makes a partnership feel authentic?

Authenticity is not a label a brand can add to a campaign. It is the result of choices that let an audience understand why this creator is talking about this product, what the creator can honestly say about it, and whether the message is advertising.

A natural fit with the creator and audience

The product or service should be relevant to the creator’s established topics and useful or interesting to the people who follow them. A large audience is not automatically a better match: Deloitte’s 2026 discussion of brand-creator collaborations argues that smaller audiences with strong influence and brand alignment may be more valuable than a large but poorly aligned audience. A credible reason to recommend it

The creator needs a truthful basis for the claims they make—such as having used or evaluated the product where the endorsement implies personal experience. Do not script a testimonial that suggests an experience the creator did not have. The FTC’s guidance says endorsements must reflect honest opinions and cannot make claims that would be deceptive or unsubstantiated if the advertiser made them directly. The creator’s own voice

A sponsored message is more credible when it remains consistent with the creator’s established work and expertise. Research on sponsored videos identifies disclosure, expression of passion, creator competence, and influencer-brand fit as relevant factors in perceived authenticity. That does not establish a universal contract clause or a score that guarantees success; it supports giving creators room to communicate in a way that suits their audience and to describe limitations honestly. Clear disclosure of the relationship

Transparency is a requirement, not a substitute for fit. In the United States, the FTC says a material connection can include payment, free or discounted products, employment, or personal or family relationships. Disclose it plainly and close to the endorsement, where people are likely to notice and understand it; do not rely on followers to infer the connection or click elsewhere to find it. The wording and placement should work in the format, whether the endorsement is spoken, written, or shown in an image. A relationship that remains useful over time

Repeated collaborations can help an audience become familiar with a creator’s relationship to a brand, but frequency alone does not create trust. Each appearance should still be relevant, truthful, and clearly disclosed. Deloitte reports associations between purchase likelihood and trusted creator recommendations, perceived authenticity of creator-led advertising, and repeated engagement with the same creators; those findings are associations, not proof that a longer deal causes purchases or trust. How to assess a proposed collaboration

Brands and creators can use these questions before agreeing to a campaign. They are a practical check, not a universal scoring formula.

  • Audience and subject: Would followers reasonably expect this creator to discuss the product, and does it connect to the creator’s established themes?
  • Basis for claims: Can the creator support what they plan to say? Does any wording imply use, results, or expertise they do not have?
  • Editorial latitude: Can the creator explain the offer in their own voice, including a limitation or a reason it may not suit some followers?
  • Disclosure: Is the material connection stated in plain language beside the endorsement and made noticeable in the relevant format?
  • Relationship horizon: Is there a sensible reason to work together repeatedly, and will each promotion continue to offer something relevant to the audience?

These checks follow the factors highlighted in FTC guidance, Deloitte’s discussion of audience alignment and sustained relationships, and research on creator-brand fit and sponsored-video authenticity. They are not a guarantee of engagement or sales.

What the disclosure evidence does—and does not—show

A 2025 Marketing Science study by Daniel Ershov, Yanting He, and Stephan Seiler analyzed more than 100 million brand-related Twitter posts. Under the authors’ preferred specification, 96% of sponsored posts in the study were classified as undisclosed; under a lower-bound classification, the figure was 82%. These estimates apply to the study’s Twitter data and classification method, not to all platforms or creator marketing as a whole. Marketing Science: How Much Influencer Marketing Is Undisclosed? Evidence from Twitter

The finding makes disclosure worth checking directly rather than assuming that creators or audiences will handle it automatically. It does not show that a disclosure alone makes a partnership authentic: fit, truthful claims, and the creator’s credibility still matter.

How FTC rules relate to creator endorsements

The FTC’s U.S. Endorsement Guides and disclosure guidance address endorsements and material connections in influencer marketing. Separately, the FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule took effect on October 21, 2024. Its FAQ explains prohibitions and obligations involving deceptive reviews and testimonials, including disclosure requirements for certain company-insider situations. It should not be confused with the broader endorsement guidance relevant to creator promotions. FTC: The Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule: Questions and Answers

For a creator-facing overview of material connections and disclosure placement, consult the FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers. For the broader endorsement and influencer guidance, see the FTC’s Endorsements, Influencers, and Reviews.
