What happens when the three days are over?
In the Nintendo 64 version, the clock runs continuously except during conversations and while the game is paused. The three in-game days total 72 hours; Nintendo’s manual says the world’s hours pass “in mere minutes,” but does not give an exact real-world duration. If the cycle reaches its end without intervention, the game ends. Playing the Ocarina’s Song of Time returns Link to 6:00 a.m. on the first day. What should you do during the first cycle?
Follow the opening story
Prioritize the opening quest chain that leads to recovering the Ocarina and restoring Link. It introduces the central goal and the reset loop; you do not need to solve every optional Clock Town activity first. This is a practical way to approach the opening, not a checklist imposed by the game. Nintendo’s Nintendo 64 game page describes the recurring cycle and the characters’ schedules, while a spoiler-light opening-cycle guide recommends concentrating on the opening quest.

Characters follow schedules, and a reset changes the state of events. If you miss an optional interaction, you can try again on another cycle. Make notes of useful discoveries and use the opening days to understand how time and progression work rather than treating every event as a one-time opportunity.

What carries over when you play the Song of Time?
For the Nintendo 64 version, the manual distinguishes lasting progress from activity that resets. It says, “When you play the SONG OF TIME, your game progress will be saved.” That does not mean every item or completed event remains. The manual’s persistence list is:

The manual also warns that characters will not remember meeting Link. Use the reset as a save-and-retry loop: important discoveries and selected progress endure, while much of the current cycle’s activity does not.

Should you deposit rupees before resetting?
Yes, if you want to keep the money. The Nintendo 64 manual lists bank deposits as saved but wallet rupees as lost when the cycle resets. Deposit money you want to retain rather than assuming currency in Link’s wallet will carry over. Consumable quantities and other temporary progress also have separate reset rules, so do not treat all collected resources as permanent.

How should you save before stopping play?
On Nintendo 64, playing the Song of Time both saves progress and returns Link to the first morning. The manual describes an interrupt-save feature as temporary: after resuming, play the Song of Time or use an Owl Statue to make a lasting save before shutting down. Otherwise, the game returns to the last Song of Time save.

Does the advice differ on Nintendo 3DS?
Yes. The Nintendo 3DS remake has its own manual and its reset description should not be treated as identical to the detailed Nintendo 64 persistence list above. Nintendo says time stops during conversations and while using subscreens; returning to the first day loses rupees and some collected items and resets dungeons and events. See the Nintendo 3DS manual for that version’s rules. Nintendo identifies the remake separately on its Majora’s Mask 3D page.
If you are playing the 3DS version, follow its manual rather than assuming every item in the Nintendo 64 save list carries over in precisely the same way.
