What Zelda game should you play after Majora’s Mask?
For the clearest story-and-chronology follow-up, play Ocarina of Time if you missed it. Nintendo’s official timeline places it before Majora’s Mask on the Child Era branch. If you have already played it, your next choice depends on what you want from the series: a darker atmosphere, a different timeline branch, modern exploration, or puzzles with Princess Zelda as the lead.

There is no single best match for every part of Majora’s Mask. Its time loop, mood, and structure are distinct, so the recommendations below are based on specific points of connection rather than a claim that another game is a direct sequel or an exact substitute.
Choose by what you want next
| If you want… | Play… | Why | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Story chronology | Ocarina of Time | Nintendo places it before Majora’s Mask on the Child Era branch. | It is the predecessor, not a game that follows Majora’s Mask. |
| A darker atmosphere on a related timeline path | Twilight Princess | Nintendo places it in the Twilight Era associated with the Child Era path. | The timeline connection does not make it a direct Majora’s Mask sequel. |
| A major change of setting and timeline branch | The Wind Waker | It belongs to Nintendo’s Adult Era branch. | It is not a chronological continuation of Majora’s Mask. |
| Open exploration and creative building | Breath of the Wild, then Tears of the Kingdom | Nintendo identifies Tears of the Kingdom as a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild. | Play Breath of the Wild first if you have not played it. |
| Puzzle-solving with Zelda as the protagonist | Echoes of Wisdom | Nintendo describes Zelda exploring, solving puzzles, and facing foes. | It offers a different gameplay approach, not a time-loop experience. |
Start with Ocarina of Time if you haven’t played it
Ocarina of Time is the most straightforward choice when you want to understand the story and chronology around Majora’s Mask. Nintendo’s timeline puts Majora’s Mask after it in the Child Era. That relationship makes Ocarina of Time the natural gap to fill, rather than evidence that the series has a continuous, game-by-game narrative.

Pick a timeline branch: Twilight Princess or The Wind Waker
Twilight Princess for the related Child Era path
If you have finished Ocarina of Time and want another game on the timeline path associated with the Child Era, consider Twilight Princess. Nintendo places it in the later Twilight Era on that path. That makes it a useful chronology-based pick, but it does not establish a direct plot continuation from Majora’s Mask.
The Wind Waker for a different branch
The Wind Waker offers a sharp change of direction if you would rather explore a separate version of Hyrule’s history. Nintendo places it in the Adult Era branch, distinct from the Child Era route that includes Majora’s Mask. Choose it for contrast, not as the next chapter in the same timeline sequence.

Choose Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom for open exploration
If you want to move from Majora’s Mask into a modern open-world pair, play Breath of the Wild first and then Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo’s developer interview describes Tears of the Kingdom as a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild, set in Hyrule after the earlier game’s conclusion. Nintendo’s developer interview
Tears of the Kingdom emphasizes traveling across Hyrule’s land and skies and using abilities to build weapons and ways to travel. That makes this pair a strong choice if you want expansive exploration and room to experiment, rather than a recommendation based on matching Majora’s Mask’s time loop. See Nintendo’s game page for Tears of the Kingdom.
Try Echoes of Wisdom for puzzles and a different lead
For a puzzle-focused change of pace, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom puts Princess Zelda at the center of an adventure involving exploration, puzzles, and foes. Nintendo lists a physical Nintendo Switch edition on its official product page. This is a distinct choice for a different protagonist and puzzle approach, not a claim that its structure resembles Majora’s Mask.

Which game is most like Majora’s Mask?
That depends on what you mean by “like.” For chronology, choose Ocarina of Time; for a darker game on the associated Child Era path, choose Twilight Princess; for a different timeline branch, choose The Wind Waker. If what you want is exploration rather than a timeline connection, start the Breath of the Wild pair. If puzzles and a different protagonist appeal most, choose Echoes of Wisdom. None of these recommendations establishes another game as a direct sequel to Majora’s Mask.
