MagSafe 3 and USB-C can both charge compatible MacBooks; neither connector is universally faster. Charging speed depends on your exact Mac model, the adapter’s wattage and USB Power Delivery support, the cable, and whether Apple documents that combination for fast charging. Choose MagSafe 3 for a magnetic connection and charge-status light, or USB-C when you want to use a compatible USB-C charger or powered display.
Is MagSafe 3 faster than USB-C?
Not by connection type alone. Apple’s fast-charge guidance lists eligible MacBook Pro combinations using either a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable or a USB-C charge cable: a 96W adapter for eligible 14-inch models and a 140W adapter for eligible 16-inch models. The applicable model and charging setup matter more than the connector label. Apple says actual results vary with settings and environmental conditions, so those combinations do not establish one universal speed ranking. Apple’s fast-charge guidance describes the eligible models and test conditions.

Apple advertises charging an eligible MacBook Air or 14- or 16-inch MacBook Pro to up to 50% in around 30 minutes with an appropriate power source and cable. That is an Apple-published manufacturer benchmark, not a guarantee for every MacBook or an independent comparison of MagSafe 3 and USB-C.

Which MacBooks support each charging method?
Compatibility depends on the MacBook generation. Apple’s charging guidance says USB-C charging is available on MacBook Pro models introduced in 2016 or later and MacBook Air models introduced in 2018 or later. MagSafe 3 is available on MacBook Air models introduced in 2022 or later and MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later, with one listed exception: MacBook Pro (13-inch, M2, 2022).

MagSafe 3 is not compatible with older MagSafe or MagSafe 2 adapters and cables. Check the exact model before buying or borrowing a charger; Apple provides model-specific identification and charging details in its Mac charging guidance.
What makes the two connections different in everyday use?
MagSafe 3: magnetic connection and status light
The MagSafe 3 connector attaches magnetically and releases if the cable is pulled, which can help avoid dragging a connected laptop off a surface. Its indicator is amber while charging or charging is on hold, and green when the Mac is fully charged.

USB-C: flexible charging sources
USB-C lets you charge through a compatible USB-C port with a suitable USB Power Delivery adapter. A compatible powered USB-C or Thunderbolt display can also supply power. This can be convenient if you already use a USB-C charger or display, though the Mac’s recommended minimum wattage still matters.

- Identify your MacBook model. Confirm the model and year so you know which charging ports and recommended adapter wattages apply.
- Check the power source. For USB-C charging, Apple says the adapter or display must support USB Power Delivery. For the best charging experience, use at least the minimum wattage recommended for your Mac model; see Apple’s adapter recommendations.
- Match the cable to the route. Use a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable for the magnetic port, or a USB-C charge cable for charging through a USB-C port. Confirm the cable and adapter combination is appropriate for your model’s charging needs.
- Check fast-charge eligibility if speed is the priority. Apple’s documented combinations are model-specific. Its fast-charge guidance lists the eligible Macs, adapters, and cables; do not assume a combination qualifies just because it fits.
For examples of Apple’s recommended USB-C adapter options, certain MacBook Air models introduced in 2022 or later have 30W, 35W, 67W, or 70W options listed; eligible 14-inch MacBook Pro models have 67W, 70W, and 96W options; and MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later with a 16-inch display are paired with a 140W adapter. These are model-dependent recommendations, not a claim that every adapter in a group is interchangeable for every configuration. Apple’s MacBook Pro cable guidance also explains the cable choices.

Can you connect MagSafe 3 and USB-C at the same time?
There is no charging-speed benefit to connecting both. Apple says: “Your Mac charges over only one port at a time, using the source that provides the most power.” The Mac selects one power source rather than combining the inputs. Apple’s charging guidance covers this behavior.

Use MagSafe 3 if your Mac supports it and you value the magnetic release or visible charging indicator. Use USB-C if you want to charge from a compatible USB-C adapter or powered display, or prefer to keep the MagSafe port free. For speed, first verify your Mac’s recommended wattage and whether Apple lists your adapter-and-cable combination for fast charging; the connector alone does not decide the result.
