Magnets did not become harmless to computers. The apparent reversal comes from two different uses of magnetism: magnetic tape and disks stored information as patterns that could be disrupted by a strong, relevant field, while motors, speakers, and sensors use magnetism as a working component. Which effect matters depends on the device and where its data is stored.
Why magnets could threaten computer data
Magnetic storage represents information through magnetized patterns. Tape, magnetic-core memory, and hard disks all used magnetic states to hold data, so an external field strong enough and close enough to affect the recording medium could put that information at risk. This is a specific vulnerability of magnetic media, not evidence that magnets poisoned every computer.

The historical importance of that storage is clear in early systems. IBM announced its 726 magnetic tape system in 1952. In 1953, MIT’s Whirlwind became the first computer to use magnetic-core memory, according to the Computer History Museum’s storage timeline. IBM shipped the RAMAC 305 in 1956 with the first hard disk drive: 50 magnetically coated platters held about 5 million characters and made real-time random access to large amounts of data possible.
Magnetic storage was not the same as a magnet placed on a computer
A hard drive can contain powerful magnets as part of its engineered mechanism while also storing data magnetically. Those internal components are positioned and used for a designed purpose; their presence does not mean an external magnet against the recording surface is safe. The relevant question is whether a field can affect the particular storage medium, not whether the device contains any magnets at all.

How magnetism became useful in everyday hardware
Magnetism is not just a way to preserve data. A current-carrying wire and a magnetic field can produce motion, while changing magnetic conditions can induce current. OpenStax describes Hans Oersted’s 1819 observation that current in a wire moved a nearby compass needle, and Michael Faraday’s later finding that relative motion between a magnet and wire could induce current. Those relationships underpin motors and generators.
Modern devices use magnetic fields for many different jobs. OpenStax lists motors in appliances, cars, and elevators; generators; recycling separation; MRI; hard drives; and tape recording. MIT OpenCourseWare notes that permanent magnets are widely used in motors, speakers, and sensors. In these cases, magnetism is a functional part of the device rather than a threat to information stored on a magnetic surface.

Permanent magnets and electromagnets do different jobs
A permanent magnet supplies a magnetic field through its material. An electromagnet produces a field when electric current flows through a coil. Both can be used in devices, but they are not interchangeable in every design: the application determines whether a stable field or a controllable, current-driven field is useful.

Why the risk changed as computer hardware changed
The storage medium itself evolved. The Computer History Museum’s account of thin-film disk media explains that it offered better coercivity and lower noise than particulate media, supporting greater potential storage density; the museum says the rest of the disk industry had adopted film disks by 1990. Flash memory, invented by Fujio Masuoka in 1984, added another way to store data that does not rely on magnetic encoding. Neither development means magnetic storage disappeared: magnetic disks and tape remained part of the storage landscape.
It is therefore misleading to say that magnets were once universally poisonous to computers and are now universally harmless. Different generations of computers used different storage and display technologies, and different devices use magnetic fields in different ways. The sources cited here establish no universal safe distance or field-strength threshold for every computer or magnet.

What to do if you are worried about a magnet near a device
- Identify the data medium. A device that stores data magnetically raises a different concern from one using flash storage. Do not assume that all storage works the same way.
- Consider the magnet and placement. The sources do not provide a general distance rule. Avoid placing a strong magnet directly against magnetic recording media or assuming that one safety distance applies to every device.
- Separate component magnets from external exposure. Magnets built into motors, speakers, sensors, or drive mechanisms are designed as components. That fact alone does not establish how an external magnet will affect another device.
Why magnets now feel ubiquitous
Magnets support functions people encounter without thinking about the underlying physics: electric power, vehicle starting, speakers, sensors, storage, and medical imaging. A 2005 National Research Council report, Opportunities in High Magnetic Field Science, put it this way: “Magnetic devices are now so deeply integrated into everyday life that the average citizen takes most of them for granted.” The apparent contradiction disappears once magnetism is understood as both a way to encode data and a tool for making devices work.
