To adjust what it shows, open Settings > Cover Screen while the phone is open. The exact options and gestures depend on the model; Samsung calls the Flip8’s external display the FlexWindow.
Wake the cover screen
The Galaxy Z Flip’s outside display is built in; “turn it on” usually means waking it, not enabling a separate feature. Double-tap the cover screen or press the Side/Power button. Samsung documents both methods across its model-specific guidance. Its instructions for the original Galaxy Z Flip are legacy guidance, not a guarantee that every model behaves identically: Samsung India’s original Galaxy Z Flip instructions.

Open the settings for your model
With the phone unfolded, go to Settings > Cover Screen. The available controls differ by generation and software. For example, Samsung’s Flip4 guide documents that model’s cover-screen options and says Always On Display is not available on its cover screen: Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip4 cover-screen guide.
Add useful widgets on a Galaxy Z Flip7
On Flip7, open Settings > Cover Screen > Widgets, then enable the widgets you want. Samsung lists Calendar, Weather, and Battery as examples; enabled widgets appear on the cover screen. See Samsung’s Flip7 widget setup guide.

Widgets are useful for information you want to check without unfolding. Choose what to show with the phone closed based on both convenience and how much information you are comfortable making visible to people nearby.
Use Flip8 FlexWindow gestures
Samsung’s Flip8 guidance describes these gestures for its FlexWindow. Do not assume they are available or identical on other generations:

- Swipe right for notifications.
- Swipe left for widgets and supported apps.
- Swipe up for Samsung Wallet after it has been set up.

Troubleshoot notification actions
If a notification appears but its action will not open on the cover screen, wake the display, open the notification, and check whether that app is allowed on the cover screen. Some actions may open on the main display after you unfold the phone, depending on the app and the action. Samsung’s model-specific steps are in its Galaxy Z Flip7 notification troubleshooting guide.

Choose settings around how you use the phone
- For quick checks: enable the widgets or supported app access you use often; the Flip7 guide confirms widget setup for that model.
- For privacy: review notification visibility and app access before leaving the phone closed in shared spaces.
- For reliable instructions: identify your exact Z Flip model first, then follow its Samsung guide. Gestures, widgets, and display options are not universal across generations.
