Magnetic particles in a hard drive are nanoscale grains built into the platter’s engineered recording film—not loose particles circulating inside the drive. Their size, spacing and magnetic properties determine how densely data can be stored and how reliably a write head can record it. Heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) addresses a key tradeoff by briefly heating a tiny area of the platter so a magnetic field can switch otherwise difficult-to-write media.
What are magnetic particles in a hard drive?
Hard disk drives (HDDs) store data magnetically on rotating platters. The platter surface carries thin, engineered layers, including a recording layer made up of nanoscale magnetic grains. A write head changes the magnetization of small regions in that layer; the resulting magnetic patterns represent recorded data.

These grains are sometimes called particles, but they are not loose material inside the drive. They are formed and arranged as part of a solid thin film on the platter. The composition and structure of that film vary by recording technology, so it is not accurate to assume that every HDD uses FePt grains.

To fit more data into a given area, a recording system needs smaller bits and more closely spaced magnetic grains. But shrinking grains makes each grain’s magnetic state more vulnerable to thermal fluctuations. Over time, a grain that is too small or insufficiently stable could lose the orientation that represents its bit.

Making grains smaller also brings neighboring grains closer together. Their magnetic fields can influence one another, complicating the effort to keep each recorded bit distinct. Seagate’s manufacturer explanation of HAMR describes this interaction between density, grain spacing and magnetic effects, alongside the challenge of thermal stability (Seagate’s HAMR explainer).
How do magnetic anisotropy and HAMR work together?
Anisotropy helps stabilize a bit—but makes it harder to write
Magnetic anisotropy describes how strongly a material favors a particular magnetization direction. Higher anisotropy can help a small grain retain its magnetic state, addressing the stability problem. The tradeoff is that the grain becomes harder for a write head’s magnetic field to switch. Researchers describe this conflict between grain size, thermal stability and writability as the magnetic-recording trilemma.

HAMR briefly heats the target area
HAMR—heat-assisted magnetic recording—helps resolve that conflict during writing. A laser-equipped recording head briefly heats a tiny target area of the medium. At the elevated temperature, the magnetic field can switch the highly stable recording material more readily. As the area cools, the written magnetic state is retained.
HAMR is a recording approach, not proof that any particular retail HDD uses FePt or this technology. Seagate’s explanation describes the manufacturer’s HAMR design; it should not be generalized to all shipping hard drives.

What do FePt research results show?
Iron-platinum (FePt) is studied for high-anisotropy recording media because its magnetic properties can support stable, small grains. A 2013 Sigma-Aldrich/Merck technical article reported an experimental FePt-C film with a mean particle diameter of 6.1 nm, a size dispersion of 1.8 nm and coercivity of 3.7 T. The same article described a static-head recording pattern equivalent to 550 Gbpsi for that experimental medium. These are historical laboratory results, not specifications for current HDDs (Sigma-Aldrich/Merck, 2013).
What are the reported density figures—and what do they mean?
NIMS’s March 2024 release said conventional perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) HDDs were around 1.5 Tbit/in² in its account, and described HAMR as capable of sustaining up to 10 Tbit/in². The latter is a stated technology capability, not a measurement of a retail drive. The release also discussed densities above 10 Tbit/in² as possible under a multilevel recording principle; it did not report an available commercial product at that density (NIMS, March 27, 2024).

What is 3D or multilevel magnetic recording?
Conventional recording places information across the platter’s surface. In 3D or multilevel approaches, researchers investigate storing distinguishable magnetic states in multiple layers or levels, potentially increasing information per area. NIMS, Seagate Technology and Tohoku University reported FePt/Ru/FePt multilayer-film work toward this kind of recording in 2024.

The reported demonstration of the 3D recording principle used simulations based on a model intended to mimic fabricated media; it was not a demonstration of a finished drive. NIMS said practical development still requires reducing FePt grain size, improving grain orientation and anisotropy, and stacking more layers. Those remaining challenges distinguish a research direction from commercial availability.

What is spin-torque HAMR?
In February 2025, NIMS reported that its researchers and Seagate demonstrated a spin-torque HAMR structure with an MnPt layer beneath an FePt recording layer. The report states: “This structure achieved approximately 35% improvement in recording efficiency compared to conventional HAMR.” That figure applies to the reported structure; NIMS said applying the method to FePt nanogranular media remains future work (NIMS, February 10, 2025).
Quick Recap
How should you interpret claims about hard-drive particles?
- “Magnetic particles” means grains in the recording film. It does not mean loose particles inside an HDD.
- FePt and HAMR are not universal HDD features. The cited material explains technology and research, not the recording media in every consumer model.
- Separate demonstrations from products. Experimental film measurements, simulations and projected density capabilities do not establish retail availability.
- Read density figures with their context. A technology capability or modeled result is not the same as a measured specification for a drive you can buy.
