A vitrimer is a thermoset-like plastic whose chemical network can rearrange under suitable conditions, making some formulations repairable or reprocessable. It is the closest materials-science match for a thermoset that can behave in selected ways like a thermoplastic—but “bends” can mean several different things, and a vitrimer does not necessarily flex like rubber at room temperature or melt like ordinary plastic.
What does “bends like a thermoplastic” mean?
The phrase can describe distinct behaviors, and they should not be treated as interchangeable:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Flexibility: the material deflects under a load while in use.
- Elastic recovery: it returns toward its original shape after the load is removed.
- Shape memory: it recovers a programmed or prior shape under specified conditions.
- Reprocessing: heat or another stimulus lets the polymer network rearrange, allowing reshaping, welding, or repair in some formulations.
A material may have one of these properties without having the others. The word “thermoplastic-like” most often refers to the ability to reshape or reprocess under suitable conditions, not to unrestricted bending at room temperature.
What is a vitrimer?
Conventional thermosets form a crosslinked polymer network when cured. Those links give the material its network structure and generally prevent it from flowing like a thermoplastic when heated. A covalent adaptable network (CAN) retains a crosslinked structure but incorporates dynamic chemistry that can let the network rearrange when a reaction is activated. Vitrimers are one prominent type of CAN. The 2019 review in Annual Review of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering describes how CANs can resemble thermosets structurally yet flow in a thermoplastic-like manner while the relevant dynamic reaction is active.

In transesterification-based examples, bond exchange can become active at elevated temperature. That can permit network rearrangement without simply turning the crosslinked material into a conventional melt. The necessary temperature, reaction rate, catalyst, processing method, and resulting mechanical properties depend on the particular formulation; there is no single vitrimer recipe or universal reprocessing condition. See the review of repairable, malleable, and recyclable thermosets made through dynamic transesterification.
Can a thermoset actually flex or recover its shape?
Yes, some dynamic-network materials are designed to combine elastic behavior with exchangeable bonds, but that is a separate design goal from making a thermoset reprocessable. Elasticity depends on factors including bond type, crosslink density, polymer backbone, and network architecture. The 2022 review on elastic vitrimers discusses these design variables and the continuing challenges in balancing mechanical performance with network dynamics, self-healing, and recyclability.

A 2026 study examined an aromatic thermosetting copolyester (ATSP) vitrimer using three-point bending creep and recovery tests across 25–220 °C. That range describes the experiments on that specific material; it is not a general operating range, a recommended processing temperature, or evidence that all vitrimers bend or recover in the same way. The study is titled “Shape recovery behavior and predictive modeling of Aromatic Thermosetting Copolyester (ATSP) vitrimers under bending deformation”.

How does a vitrimer compare with a thermoset and a thermoplastic?
| Material class | Network and behavior | What to expect from reshaping |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional thermoset | Cured, crosslinked network; does not flow like a thermoplastic when heated. | Reshaping by ordinary melt processing is generally prevented by the permanent network structure. |
| Thermoplastic | Can soften and flow when heated, then solidify as it cools. | Can generally be reshaped through suitable heating and processing. |
| Vitrimer or other CAN | Crosslinked network with dynamic chemistry; rearrangement depends on the chemistry and whether its trigger is active. | Some formulations may be reshaped, welded, repaired, or reprocessed under defined conditions. Those capabilities and conditions are formulation-specific. |
This comparison is about network behavior, not a claim that every material in a category has the same stiffness, flexibility, durability, or recycling pathway.

What should you check before calling one “recyclable” or “flexible”?
Those labels are not enough to predict performance. For a specific material, look for evidence on:
- Use-temperature behavior: stiffness, flexibility, elastic recovery, and dimensional stability in the intended environment.
- Reprocessing conditions: whether the trigger is heat, light, a chemical condition, or—in some elastic vitrimer systems—moisture, and what time and equipment the process requires.
- Network design: the dynamic bond chemistry, crosslink density, polymer backbone, and architecture.
- Durability: mechanical performance and resistance to relevant heat and chemicals before and after repair or reprocessing.
- End-of-life route: whether the particular material can be welded, repaired, reshaped, chemically recycled, or only downcycled.
- Evidence of maturity: whether the claimed result is a laboratory demonstration, a prototype, or a verified commercial product.
Are vitrimer plastics available as everyday products?
The cited reviews and institutional material describe research potential, including vitrimer composites for transportation applications, rather than establishing a particular retail product or broad commercial availability. A Pacific Northwest National Laboratory page, “Malleable Thermosets (Vitrimers) from CO2 and Plants”, frames composites as a development opportunity and discusses bio-based vitrimers in the context of the report it cites. That research-status discussion should not be read as proof of current market readiness.

So, if the question is about a material concept, “vitrimer” is the useful term to investigate. If it is about buying a plastic that bends like rubber and can later be reshaped, the available sources do not identify a verified consumer product or establish that a general-purpose vitrimer has those combined properties.
