In one 2025 study, polyurethane foam containing aligned iron–cobalt particles bent more at lower particle loadings and stretched more as the composite became stiffer at higher loadings. The shift occurred around 40% by weight in that specific formulation—not as a universal rule for magnetic foam. The finding illustrates why the phrase “magnetic foam” describes a family of experimental materials, not one standard product.
What magnetic foam is
Magnetic foam is a soft, porous material—often a polymer foam—with magnetic particles embedded in its structure. Its response depends on the polymer, particle type and amount, particle alignment, and how the foam is made. For example, a tactile-sensing experiment used polyurethane foam filled with spherical carbonyl-iron particles, while a separate study examined polyurethane containing oriented Fe70Co30 microparticles. These are distinct formulations, not interchangeable versions of a single material.

The phrase also does not identify a standard retail material. The cited studies demonstrate laboratory formulations; they do not establish a specific consumer product or supplier for the tested iron–cobalt foam.
Why one foam bends while another stretches
The 2025 study examined magnetostriction: a material’s dimensional response associated with magnetization. In its polyurethane–Fe70Co30 composites, bending and stretching competed. Particle content and alignment affected the magnetic and mechanical properties, while stiffness influenced which kind of deformation prevailed.

At or below 40% particle content
For the formulations tested at 40% by weight or less, bending dominated and magnetostriction was negative. This describes the studied material and preparation conditions, not every magnetic foam recipe.
Above 40% particle content
Above 40% by weight, the composite stiffened. Bending was suppressed, so stretching dominated and the measured magnetostriction became positive—particularly in the foam-film composites. The reported change is tied to this study’s formulation; it is not a general design threshold.

The researchers considered freely expanded foam as well as foam-film-like structures made through constrained expansion. That structural difference matters: preparation and constraint can affect stiffness and response, so a result for one structure should not automatically be applied to another.
What else researchers are investigating
Adaptive cushioning
A 2024 study investigated magnetorheological elastomeric foam as adaptive cushioning, measuring compression stress, energy absorption, complex modulus, and equivalent viscous damping under magnetic-field conditions. It described soft behavior under light compression and increased resistance under larger impacts and strains. This is research evidence for a potential application, not proof of broad commercial use.

Tactile sensing
In a separate research direction, deformation of magnetic foam changes magnetic properties that coils can detect. The experimental material used polyurethane and spherical carbonyl-iron particles. The work supports tactile sensing as a laboratory concept; it does not show that a finished consumer sensor is widely available.

Results only make sense when the material and test are clear. Useful details to check include:

- Composition: the polymer matrix, magnetic-particle type, particle content, and whether the particles are aligned.
- Structure and preparation: whether the sample is open foam or a constrained foam-film structure, and how expansion and manufacturing affect stiffness.
- What was measured: bending and magnetostriction, compression and damping, or deformation-based sensing. These are different tests, not one overall performance score.
- Evidence for the application: whether a claim comes from a laboratory demonstration or from a validated product in real-world use.
A stretchable magnetic film is not magnetic foam
A 2021 Nanoscale Advances study offers a related but distinct example: a stretchable cobalt-ferrite film. The paper reports that the film stretched up to 200%, bent to a 2.5 mm radius, and retained 73% of its magnetization after 150% linear mechanical stretching over 100 cycles. Those figures belong to the film, not to the polyurethane foams described above, and should not be used as foam performance claims.
