In one research example, light is the external switch: gold nanorods embedded in a cell-derived nanocomposite absorb a chosen wavelength and produce heat, which is designed to release antibodies after the material has entered living cells. The work illustrates how chemistry, biophysics and biology can combine to make nanomaterials respond to a stimulus; it is research, not an available treatment.
What “remote-controlled” means for a nanomaterial
Remote control here means using an external stimulus to trigger a designed action in a biological setting. The aim is not to steer an individual particle like a miniature robot, but to make a material respond when and where a chosen trigger is applied.

At the nanoscale, materials can have size-dependent optical, electromagnetic and fluorescence properties. Those properties can be useful in biological contexts because nanomaterials interact with cells, proteins and antibodies. The challenge is to make a material whose intended action is efficient and confined to a specific area.

Chemist Beatriz Pelaz and biophysicist Pablo del Pino co-founded the BioNanoTools group in 2017 at CIQUS, the University of Santiago de Compostela’s research centre for biological chemistry and molecular materials. A 2022 profile by Victoria Atkinson in Chemistry World describes the group as developing smart nanomaterials for medical and biological applications.

Pelaz said the group’s strength came from its mix of backgrounds: “My favourite thing about the group is that we are really gathering people with different backgrounds”. She described its goal as making “smart, efficient, remote-controlled nanomaterials that can be switched on or off using external stimuli.” Both statements are from Pelaz, quoted by Atkinson in 2022.
How light is designed to trigger antibody release
- Load the cargo. Antibodies are placed in a biomimetic, cell-derived plasmonic nanocomposite doped with gold nanorods.
- Let cells take it up. The material is intended to be internalised by living cells and remain dormant until it receives the chosen light stimulus.
- Apply a specific wavelength. The gold nanorods absorb the light and generate heat.
- Use the heat to release antibodies. The intended result is controlled release from the composite after stimulation.
Pelaz explained the proposed mechanism this way: “By combining these two abilities, the biocompatible plasmonic properties and the thermal abilities of the gold nanorods, which absorb light, we can induce controlled release of the antibodies.” The description is a research mechanism reported in the 2022 profile; it does not demonstrate clinical benefit or establish that a therapy is available to patients.

What the DNA-origami nanoprinters project was exploring
A separate project described in the same profile used DNA origami: DNA strands folded into specialised three-dimensional structures. The team hoped to use these structures as “nanoprinters” to position ligands—the molecules displayed on a nanoparticle’s surface—with fine spatial control. One design motivation was to imitate protein patterns found on viral membranes.
At the time of the 2022 article, Pelaz described this as a fundamental study that had been under way for about a year. Its question was how the number and spatial arrangement of ligands affect a nanomaterial’s biological fate. Pelaz put the motivation this way: “I would like to understand how the spatial distribution and number of ligands can determine the biological fate of nanomaterials.” The profile does not establish the project’s progress or outcome since then.
