Buy a Draft Booster for an older-set Draft or Sealed event. Buy a Set Booster when you mainly want to open packs or collect, and prefer a variable pack with a chance at several rare or mythic rare cards. For new tabletop releases, choose a Play Booster: Wizards of the Coast replaced the separate Set Booster and Draft Booster lines with that unified product beginning with Murders at Karlov Manor.
The right booster depends on what you will do with the cards
Set Boosters and Draft Boosters were not two versions of the same product. They were designed around different moments in the Magic: The Gathering experience. Draft Boosters supplied a relatively predictable spread of commons, uncommons and one rare slot so a group could build balanced Limited decks from sealed packs. Set Boosters varied their contents to make opening packs more exciting, including an art card, a foil and a chance at multiple rares.

What Draft Boosters were built to do
A controlled pool for Draft
In a normal Booster Draft, each participant opens packs, selects one card at a time and passes the remaining cards around the table. The environment works best when every pack has a broadly useful distribution of cards. Draft Boosters were built for that purpose. Wizards’ product guide labels them “Best For: Draft play experience,” and a 2023 set overview describes them as optimized for Draft and Sealed play.

A typical Draft Booster contained 10 commons, three uncommons and one rare or mythic rare. A concrete example from Streets of New Capenna listed one rare or mythic rare, three uncommons, 10 commons and one token, ad or counter card. Individual sets could alter details, but the central idea remained a reliable stream of cards at the common and uncommon rarities.
Why predictable commons matter
Commons and uncommons make up most Limited decks. They provide the creatures, removal, combat tricks, mana fixing and other role-players that let drafters identify colors and archetypes. A Draft Booster’s regular structure does not guarantee a good deck, but it gives the table a consistent number of cards with which to build one.
Draft Boosters also made it easier for an organizer to estimate how many packs were needed. A traditional eight-player Draft commonly used three packs per player, while a Sealed event commonly used six packs per player. Those event conventions describe how Limited is normally run; they are not a promise that every set’s cards will produce equal power or color balance.

An opening experience rather than a Limited environment
Set Boosters were introduced as packs to open for enjoyment and collecting. Wizards’ guide labels them “Best For: Opening packs for fun.” The original launch design contained 12 Magic cards plus an art card and a token or other additional object, and a Set Booster display contained 30 packs.

The documented 2023 description of the former Set Booster structure listed three to six commons, three to six uncommons and one to four rare and/or mythic rare cards. The variable slots are the attraction: one pack might contain only one rare, while another could contain several. The exact contents and special treatments changed by set, so those figures should be read as the documented product description rather than a guarantee for every older release.
Why collectors often prefer the variance
Set Boosters can feel more rewarding when the goal is to discover something rather than assemble a Limited pool. The art card provides a piece of set artwork; the foil slot adds a chance at a shiny version; and the rare or mythic rare range creates the possibility of opening more than one high-rarity card. That structure favors the emotional highs of pack opening and the gradual accumulation of cards for casual decks, binders or trades.
The trade-off is that a Set Booster does not supply the same number of commons and uncommons as a Draft Booster. A pack with several rares may contain fewer low-rarity cards that are useful for a Limited pool. More rares therefore does not mean a better Draft pack.

Can you draft with Set Boosters?
You can physically hand Set Boosters to players and pick cards from them, but that does not make them an appropriate replacement for Draft Boosters. Mark Rosewater, Head Designer at Wizards of the Coast, wrote that “Set Boosters are not designed for Limited play” and that using them for Limited “results in significantly substandard Limited play.” His statement appears in Wizards’ October 16, 2023 article about Play Boosters.
What goes wrong in practice
- Too few low-rarity playables: Variable common and uncommon slots can leave players short of the cards that normally fill out a Limited deck.
- Uneven pools: A player who opens several rare cards may have a high-power pool but not enough coherent creatures, removal or mana to support it.
- Draft signals become noisy: When packs vary widely, the cards passed around the table give less reliable information about which colors are open.
- Power spikes distort games: A few players can open multiple high-rarity cards while others receive ordinary pools, making results depend more on opening variance.
If your group deliberately wants a chaotic, novelty format, you can establish house rules and use Set Boosters. Call it a casual experiment rather than a normal Draft, and agree beforehand that card pools and game balance will differ from the format Wizards designed.
Choosing packs for a Draft or Sealed event
Use Draft Boosters for a conventional event
For an organized store event, a tournament-style gathering or a regular weekly Draft, select Draft Boosters from the same set. Keeping every player on the same product reduces avoidable variation and preserves the intended Limited environment.
- Confirm the set: Use packs from one set unless your chosen format explicitly allows a mixed pool.
- Count players and packs: For a typical Draft, plan on three packs per player; for a typical Sealed event, plan on six packs per player.
- Verify the packaging: Older inventory can include Set Boosters, Draft Boosters and Collector Boosters from the same set. Read the product name rather than relying on the artwork.
- Check language and region: Make sure every participant receives packs in the language and edition your event supports.
- Explain unusual collation: If the set has special slots or replacement cards, tell players before opening so expectations are clear.
When a mixed product pool is a bad idea
Combining Set and Draft Boosters in one Draft makes the environment less predictable. A mixed event can work as a casual novelty, but it no longer represents the set’s normal Limited experience. Do not advertise it as a standard Draft if participants expect the official product structure.

Choosing packs for casual opening and collecting
Set Boosters fit the opening-first goal
If you are opening a few packs after buying a set, giving them as gifts or collecting art cards and foils, Set Boosters were the more suitable older product. Their variable rarity slots create a genuine chance of opening multiple rares or mythic rares in one pack, and the art card adds an item that Draft Boosters were not built around.
That does not make every Set Booster financially better. A higher possible rare count is not the same as a guaranteed valuable card, and the value of a foil or art card depends on the set and the individual card. Treat the extra variance as an opening feature, not as a promise of profit.
When Draft Boosters still make sense for collectors
Draft Boosters can be the practical choice when they are the only reasonably priced sealed packs available for an older set, or when you want a larger supply of commons and uncommons for kitchen-table decks. They remain genuine Magic packs; they simply place less emphasis on the opening spectacle.

Wizards of the Coast announced that the two-product system would be combined into Play Boosters, beginning with Murders at Karlov Manor. The stated goal was to combine “the play experience of a Draft Booster with the fun opening experience of a Set Booster.” For current tabletop releases, Play Booster is therefore the relevant product name.

How Play Boosters change the buying decision
You no longer need to choose between a Draft-branded pack and a Set-branded pack when buying a new tabletop set. Play Boosters are intended to serve both Limited play and ordinary pack opening. Wizards said at introduction that Play Boosters would sell for the same price as Set Boosters, while Play Booster display boxes would contain 36 boosters, matching the display size used for Draft Booster boxes.
Those statements describe the introduction of the product line. Prices, promotions, regional availability and later set configurations can change, so confirm the current listing for the exact set and seller. A Play Booster display is not automatically interchangeable with every older Draft Booster display for event planning; read the current set’s Limited and product information.
Availability, price and seller checks for older sets
Set Boosters and Draft Boosters are now mainly older-set or remaining-inventory products. The same set may appear in multiple languages, with different printings and different quantities left in stock. A low price can reflect clearance, a different language or a product that is not the pack type you intended to buy.
- Read the full product name: “Set Booster,” “Draft Booster,” “Play Booster” and “Collector Booster” are distinct labels.
- Check the set and release era: Older sets may have both Set and Draft versions, while newer tabletop sets use Play Boosters.
- Confirm the number of packs: Historical displays were not uniform across products; the original Set Booster display had 30 packs, while Play Booster displays were announced with 36.
- Check language and region: Availability and prices can differ by country and language.
- Separate opening value from card value: A pack’s chance of extra rares does not establish a resale return.
Do not confuse Set Boosters with Collector Boosters
Collector Boosters occupy a separate category aimed at premium treatments and concentrated special cards. If your priority is foil, showcase, extended-art or other premium presentation, compare Collector Boosters on their own terms. They are not a direct answer to the question of whether an older set’s Set or Draft Booster is better for Limited or ordinary opening.
A practical decision rule
- Is the pack for a normal Draft or Sealed event? Choose Draft Boosters for an older set. For a current tabletop set, use Play Boosters.
- Are you opening packs mainly for enjoyment or collecting? Choose Set Boosters when available for an older set, especially if you value art cards and variable rare slots.
- Are you buying a new tabletop release? Start with Play Boosters because they replaced the separate Set and Draft lines.
- Are you chasing premium versions? Look at Collector Boosters instead of treating Set Boosters as a premium product.
- Is the listing unclear or unusually cheap? Verify the exact booster type, set, language, pack count and seller before paying.
Bottom line for each buyer
For the event organizer
Draft Boosters are the correct older-set purchase for a conventional Draft or Sealed event. Their regular common, uncommon and rare distribution is the structure Wizards designed for Limited.
For the casual opener
Set Boosters are the better older-set fit when the pleasure comes from revealing cards. Their art card, foil and variable one-to-four rare or mythic rare range provide more pack-to-pack variation, without making a value guarantee.
For the current-set buyer
Buy Play Boosters. They are the unified tabletop booster introduced with Murders at Karlov Manor, combining the intended Limited role of Draft Boosters with the opening appeal of Set Boosters.
