For Adobe Commerce 2.4.8 and later, use OpenSearch: Adobe no longer supports Elasticsearch on those releases. For other versions, check the exact release, patch, and deployment type before choosing. Adobe’s compatibility tables differ across release lines, and Cloud support is not interchangeable with on-premises support.
Start with your Adobe Commerce version
“Magento 2” is still a familiar name, but Adobe’s current documentation refers to the platform as Adobe Commerce. The supported search engine is determined by your exact Commerce release and patch—not by the broad Magento 2 label.

Adobe’s System Requirements lists tested software combinations by release and says configurations outside its tables are not validated or supported. Its current latest-release table lists OpenSearch 3 for Adobe Commerce 2.4.9. Do not treat that as a recommendation for other releases; check the row for your version.
Adobe’s upgrade prerequisites say Commerce 2.4.8 and later no longer support Elasticsearch and direct users to OpenSearch. Older release lines have different compatibility rules, so consult the release-specific table rather than carrying an engine version or configuration setting forward by assumption.

How Cloud and on-premises support differ
Adobe Commerce on Cloud infrastructure
Adobe’s Cloud service documentation says Elasticsearch 7 and later is not supported on Adobe Commerce on Cloud infrastructure and directs users of Commerce 2.4.4 and later to the OpenSearch service. Adobe notes that Cloud service support reflects versions tested and deployed on its infrastructure and can differ from on-premises compatibility.
When setting up or upgrading the Cloud service, check that the deployed OpenSearch version is compatible with the OpenSearch PHP client used by the application. Adobe documents a Cloud service setup path; depending on the environment, changing production or staging configuration may require an Adobe Support ticket.

On-premises installations
Use the System Requirements entry for your precise Commerce release and patch. An on-premises compatibility entry does not establish that the same version is available or supported as a Cloud service, and Cloud service guidance does not replace the on-premises matrix.

Adobe describes OpenSearch as an open-source fork of Elasticsearch 7.10.2, following Elasticsearch’s licensing changes. That history explains the relationship, but it does not make major versions, application clients, plugins, or operational details automatically interchangeable. For a Commerce deployment, the release and deployment compatibility documented by Adobe is the deciding factor.

Configure and verify the connection
Adobe’s search configuration guide covers selecting the search engine and entering connection details. Confirm the engine label and connection values appropriate to your Commerce release; from 2.4.6 onward, Adobe says to use opensearch as the engine value for OpenSearch.
Check the hostname, port, index prefix, HTTP authentication, and connection test. Adobe lists port 9200 and prefix magento2 as defaults. If multiple Commerce installations share one search-engine instance, use a unique prefix for each installation.
- Identify the precise Commerce version and patch.
- Check Adobe’s System Requirements for that release and your deployment type.
- For Cloud, verify the available OpenSearch service version and compatibility with the application’s PHP client.
- Set the engine and connection details using the guidance for your release and environment.
- Run the connection test and verify the hostname, port, prefix, and authentication settings.
Do not expect an engine switch to add suffix search
Adobe says neither Elasticsearch nor OpenSearch supports suffix search out of the box. For example, searching for only the ending portion of a SKU may not return the expected result. If suffix matching is a requirement, treat it as a separate search-design problem rather than assuming that choosing one engine over the other will provide it.

What the comparison can—and cannot—settle
| Decision factor | What Adobe’s published information establishes | What you need to check |
|---|---|---|
| Commerce release and patch | Supported combinations vary by release; Commerce 2.4.8 and later no longer support Elasticsearch. OpenSearch 3 is listed for Commerce 2.4.9. | The System Requirements entry for your exact release and patch. |
| Deployment type | Cloud service support can differ from on-premises compatibility. Cloud documentation directs Commerce 2.4.4 and later users to OpenSearch. | Cloud service availability for your environment or the on-premises compatibility table. |
| Application client | For Cloud, Adobe says to check compatibility between the deployed service and the OpenSearch PHP client. | The client version used by your application and its compatibility with the target service. |
| Performance, relevance, and operating cost | Adobe’s cited compatibility material does not provide a benchmark comparison of these factors. | Evidence from your own workload and deployment; there is no established universal winner here. |
Adobe also says Elasticsearch 7.17 reached end of support on January 15, 2026. Its documentation advises migration to a compatible OpenSearch version for Commerce 2.4.4, 2.4.5, and 2.4.6, whose release lines will not validate or support newer Elasticsearch major versions. Check Adobe’s current lifecycle and compatibility wording before planning a migration.
