This read-only-first workflow helps avoid targeting the wrong control or acting while a page is still changing. It is a practical operating rule—not a guarantee that a framework can confirm the action is authorized or matches the operator’s intent.
Why a loaded page may not be ready
A browser’s document-ready state does not necessarily mean the application has finished updating. JavaScript can continue changing the page, and a control needed for an interaction may not yet exist. Selenium’s documentation describes synchronization with the browser’s current state as a major challenge: Selenium’s introductory guide notes that doing it well is an advanced topic.

That is why a page-load event alone is weak evidence that a particular control is ready. Inspect the relevant content and wait for the condition that matters to the intended interaction.
Use a read-only-first workflow
- Observe the page. Read relevant visible text, labels, current values, and nearby context. Do not treat page load as proof that dynamic updates have finished.
- Locate the intended control. Prefer a meaningful accessible role and name, label, or visible text. If controls repeat, scope the search to the relevant area or refine it with filters. Use an explicit test contract where appropriate.
- Check the target and its state. Confirm that the locator identifies the intended control unambiguously and that the control is ready for the planned interaction. Choose a wait condition tied to the application state you need.
- Make the smallest intended change. Proceed only when the target and desired outcome are clear. Avoid bypassing interaction checks casually.
- Verify the result. Inspect the resulting page state or a relevant confirmation. An attempted click is not proof that the desired change took effect.
This sequence is a workflow recommendation based on the frameworks’ locator, synchronization, and interaction guidance. It is not a feature guarantee: framework checks cannot determine whether an action is authorized, appropriate, or free of downstream consequences.

How Playwright and Selenium support the workflow
| Area | Playwright | Selenium |
|---|---|---|
| Finding a target | Locators can use roles, labels, text, and test IDs; they resolve when used. The documentation recommends user-facing locators where possible. Playwright locators | Offers multiple locator strategies. A singular lookup returns the first match, and searches can be scoped to an element. Selenium element finders |
| Synchronization | Locator actions wait for relevant actionability conditions, and assertions can retry. Playwright actionability | Wait strategies address asynchronous page state; document readiness does not capture every JavaScript change. Selenium waits |
| Interaction checks | Before a click, Playwright checks uniqueness, visibility, stability, event reception, and enabled state. The force option bypasses some non-essential checks. |
Interactions check whether an element is interactable; a click can be intercepted when another element obscures the target. Selenium element interactions |
These mechanisms reduce certain classes of interaction failure; they do not establish that the operator chose the right action. Playwright’s best-practices guidance favors resilient, user-facing locators, while Selenium’s locator behavior makes it especially important to check for multiple matches before relying on a singular lookup.
What to do when the page or target is unexpected
- Several plausible matches appear: do not rely on a first-match lookup or guess. Inspect the surrounding content, scope the locator, and narrow it until the intended control is clear.
- The expected control is missing or changing: gather more information and wait for the relevant state instead of assuming that the document-ready event means the application is settled.
- A click is blocked or intercepted: treat that as a reason to inspect the page and target again, not as an invitation to bypass checks without understanding the obstruction.
- The action completes but the result is unclear: inspect the resulting page state or confirmation before treating the change as successful.
Read-only discovery does not need to mean exhaustive inspection of the entire site. Focus on the content and state that identify the target and establish what the planned action should accomplish.
