On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, install the separate current-generation Mafia III: Definitive Edition release; launching the older PS4 or Xbox One build will not provide the new console behavior. Even after the upgrade, some pre-rendered movie cinematics remain 30 FPS by design.
What the 60 FPS upgrade actually changes
The answer depends on whether you are playing on PC or on a current-generation console. These are not the same update path.

On PC, 2K’s patch announcement documents three choices in the video menu: 30, 60 and Unlimited frames per second. Selecting 60 removes a 30-FPS target, but it does not promise that every computer will render every scene at 60. Selecting Unlimited removes the menu cap and leaves performance to the game, your hardware and the rest of the system.
On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, a report dated 8 October 2026 describes a distinct current-generation Mafia III: Definitive Edition release with 60 FPS gameplay. The release distinction is critical: a modern console can run the older console build while the game itself continues to behave like the 30-FPS version.

Fixing a 30 FPS result on PC
Use this order so you can separate an old setting from a genuine performance limit.
- Finish the game update. Open your game client and wait until all Mafia III updates have completed. Do not diagnose the frame rate while an update is still pending.
- Open the in-game menu. Start the game, open the Display or Video menu, and locate the frame-rate option.
- Choose 60 FPS or Unlimited. The PC patch specifically adds those choices alongside 30 FPS. Choose 60 if you want a defined target; choose Unlimited if you want the game to render above 60 when your system can do so.
- Apply the change and test normal gameplay. Check driving, combat and free-roaming sections rather than judging the result from a single menu or movie sequence.
- Re-check controls after the update. The patch notice warns that keyboard mappings were reset. It does not guarantee that every user setting remains unchanged, so verify the frame-rate option again if the game behaves differently after patching.
If the menu is set to 60 or Unlimited but performance falls below 60, that is a performance problem rather than proof that the 30-FPS cap is still active. The available evidence does not establish a guaranteed PC specification for sustained 60 FPS, so treat the following checks as diagnostics, not as a promised hardware solution.
When PC performance drops below 60
Confirm the game is limited by performance, not by the menu
Return to Display/Video and verify the selected value. A patch or settings reset can put the game back on 30 FPS. If the option still reads 60 or Unlimited, continue with system checks instead of repeatedly changing the same setting.

Check resolution and graphics workload
Higher resolution increases the work required from the GPU. If your frame rate is unstable, temporarily reduce the display resolution or other demanding visual settings and test the same gameplay location. This is a diagnostic comparison: it can show whether rendering load is the constraint, but it does not establish a universal best setting for every PC.
Observe CPU and GPU load
Monitor whether the GPU or CPU is heavily occupied while the frame rate falls. A GPU-bound result points toward rendering workload; a CPU-bound result can appear during busy scenes even when the graphics card has unused capacity. The patch documentation provides the frame-rate choices but no independent hardware benchmark, so there is no supported minimum specification that guarantees 60 FPS.
Check refresh rate, drivers and thermals
Make sure the display is configured for the refresh rate you intend to use, and verify that graphics drivers are current. Excess heat can reduce clock speeds and cause performance to decline after the system has been running for a while. Compare a short test immediately after launch with another test after extended play to see whether heat is involved.

Close competing applications
Background applications can consume CPU time, memory or GPU resources. Close unnecessary programs, then repeat the same in-game test. If the frame rate improves, add applications back one at a time to identify the conflict rather than assuming the game is capped.

Getting 60 FPS on PlayStation 5
The current-generation release is the relevant version for 60 FPS gameplay. The documented support applies to Mafia III: Definitive Edition on PlayStation 5, not automatically to an older PS4 installation running through backward compatibility.
- Open your installed games and identify the title and version shown for Mafia III.
- Confirm that the installed title is the current-generation Mafia III: Definitive Edition, rather than the legacy PS4 build.
- If the current-generation release is not installed, locate the eligible PS5 version in your game library or store and install that listing.
- Launch the current-generation version and test during ordinary gameplay.
- If a movie cinematic appears to run at 30 FPS, let it finish and check gameplay afterward; pre-rendered movies are an intentional exception.
The available 2026 patch details establish 60 FPS gameplay support, but they do not describe a separate in-game frame-rate switch on PlayStation 5. The key console-side action is therefore selecting and launching the correct build.

Getting 60 FPS on Xbox Series X|S
Xbox has an especially easy-to-miss release distinction. The documented listing is named Mafia III: Definitive Edition for Xbox Series X|S. Continuing to launch the older Xbox One build will not produce the current-generation frame-rate behavior.
- Open the Xbox game library or store search.
- Search for the exact listing Mafia III: Definitive Edition for Xbox Series X|S.
- Install that current-generation listing if your account is eligible for it.
- Start the newly installed version, not the older Xbox One entry that may remain on the console.
- Judge the result in gameplay. A pre-rendered movie can still play at 30 FPS even when the gameplay portion is operating at 60.
If both versions are installed, use the title and platform label shown on the launch tile to avoid opening the legacy build by habit. The console upgrade is a separate version to locate and install; changing a television setting or restarting the older build cannot convert it into the Series X|S release.

Why some cutscenes still look like 30 FPS
The current-generation release does not convert every piece of video to 60 FPS. According to the 2026 patch details, many cinematics are rendered in real time and play at 60 FPS, while pre-rendered movies play at 30 FPS.

That creates two legitimate results in one play session:
- Real-time cinematic: rendered by the game engine and able to use the 60 FPS gameplay mode.
- Pre-rendered movie: a prerecorded sequence that remains 30 FPS.
A 30-FPS pre-rendered sequence therefore does not show that the upgrade failed. Test after the cinematic returns to interactive play. If gameplay is smooth at 60 while only specific movie sequences look less fluid, the behavior matches the documented design.

A practical verification checklist
- Identify whether you are on PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- On PC, confirm the game finished updating and that Display/Video is set to 60 FPS or Unlimited.
- On current-generation consoles, confirm the title is Mafia III: Definitive Edition, not the legacy PS4 or Xbox One build.
- On Xbox, look specifically for the listing named Mafia III: Definitive Edition for Xbox Series X|S.
- Test interactive gameplay rather than relying on a pre-rendered movie cinematic.
- If PC gameplay remains under 60 with the correct option selected, investigate resolution, GPU/CPU load, refresh rate, drivers, thermals and background applications.
- After a PC patch, verify keyboard mappings and other settings before drawing conclusions from a changed control or performance experience.
What the upgrade does not promise
A selected 60-FPS mode is a target or cap choice, not a universal performance guarantee. On PC, sustained frame rate depends on the computer and current system load, and no independently published hardware benchmark or guaranteed specification has been established here. On consoles, 60 FPS applies to gameplay in the current-generation release, while pre-rendered movie cinematics remain 30 FPS.
